Global health trajectories: analysis of health production functions and inequality decomposition.

BACKGROUND: Global health progress accelerated from 2000 to 2019, followed by severe disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study provides a demographic and econometric assessment of Healthy Life Expectancy (HALE) trends, associations between socioeconomic factors and health service coverage, and projections to 2030 under alternative policy scenarios. Because the analysis is observational, findings should be interpreted as associations rather than causal effects. METHODS: We applied a continuous-change demographic decomposition to partition HALE gains (2000-2019) and pandemic losses (

Global oral health of older people--call for public health action.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this report is (1) to provide a global overview of oral health conditions in older people, use of oral health services, and self care practices; (2) to explore what types of oral health services are available to older people, and (3) to identify some major barriers to and opportunities for the establishment of oral health services and health promotion programmes. METHODS: A postal questionnaire designed by the World Health Organization (WHO) was distributed worldwide to the Chief Dental Officers or country oral health focal points at ministries of health. WHO received 4

Research Investments in Global Health: A Systematic Analysis of UK Infectious Disease Research Funding and Global Health Metrics, 1997-2013.

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases account for a significant global burden of disease and substantial investment in research and development. This paper presents a systematic assessment of research investments awarded to UK institutions and global health metrics assessing disease burden. METHODS: We systematically sourced research funding data awarded from public and philanthropic organisations between 1997 and 2013. We screened awards for relevance to infection and categorised data by type of science, disease area and specific pathogen. Investments were compared with mortality, disability-adjus

Towards global control of parasitic diseases in the Covid-19 era: One Health and the future of multisectoral global health governance.

Human parasitic infections-including malaria, and many neglected tropical diseases (NTDs)-have long represented a Gordian knot in global public health: ancient, persistent, and exceedingly difficult to control. With the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic substantially interrupting control programmes worldwide, there are now mounting fears that decades of progress in controlling global parasitic infections will be undone. With Covid-19 moreover exposing deep vulnerabilities in the global health system, the current moment presents a watershed opportunity to plan future efforts to reduce the

Global antimicrobial resistance: a system-wide comprehensive investigation using the Global One Health Index.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the top ten global public health challenges. However, given the lack of a comprehensive assessment of worldwide AMR status, our objective is to develop a One Health-based system-wide evaluation tool on global AMR. METHODS: We have further developed the three-hierarchical Global One Health Index (GOHI)-AMR indicator scheme, which consists of five key indicators, 17 indicators, and 49 sub-indicators, by incorporating 146 countries' data from diverse authoritative databases, including WHO's Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance

Global health, global surgery and mass casualties. I. Rationale for integrated mass casualty centres.

It has been well-documented recently that 5 billion people globally lack surgical care. Also well-documented is the need to improve mass casualty disaster response. Many of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030-healthcare and economic milestones-require significant improvement in global surgical care, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. Trauma/stroke centres evolved in high-income countries with evidence that 24/7/365 surgical and critical care markedly improved morbidity and mortality for trauma and stroke and for cardiovascular events, diff

Oral Health and the SDGs: Unlocking Missed Potential for Global Health Gains.

INTRODUCTION: Oral health is a crucial yet neglected aspect of the global health and development agenda. Although oral diseases affect almost half of the world's population, they receive little attention and public investment by policymakers, undermining progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to 1) analyse the SDG framework through an oral health lens, identifying links across goals and targets, and 2) quantify the reduction in oral disease burden required by 2030 under a counterfactual status quo projection and 2 policy benchmark scenarios: one-t

Aflatoxins and Human Health: Global Exposure, Disease Burden, and One Health Strategies.

Mycotoxin contamination represents a major public health and economic burden worldwide. Aflatoxins, particularly aflatoxin B1, are the most detrimental for human health. In this review, we discuss the sources of exposure and geographic distribution. The prevalence of aflatoxin-albumin/lysine adduct detection in humans varies dramatically across the world, from 0% reported in two European studies to up to 100% reported in studies from parts of Africa and Asia. We also summarize the disease outcomes that aflatoxins are associated with in humans. We focus particularly on cancer outcomes, which af

Public Health Approaches to Promoting University Students' Mental Health: A Global Perspective.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Provide a critical overview of recent global advances in student mental health from a public health perspective, highlighting key challenges and gaps in the literature. RECENT FINDINGS: Mental disorders and suicidality are common among university students globally. However, there is a significant treatment gap even though evidence-based treatments are available. To overcome barriers to treatment, public health interventions should be conceptualized within a developmental paradigm that takes cognizance of the developmental tasks of young adulthood. Global maternal health and newborn health: Looking backwards to learn from history.

The late appearance of the 'M' on the international health agenda - in its own right and not just as a carrier of the intrauterine passenger - is thought-provoking. The 'M' was absent for decades in textbooks of 'tropical medicine' until the rhetoric question was formulated: 'Where is the "M" in MCH?' The selective antenatal 'high-risk approach' gained momentum but had to give way to the fact that all pregnant women are at risk due to unforeseeable complications. In order to provide trained staff to master such complications in impoverished rural areas (with no doctors), some countries have em

Impact of global health residency training on medical knowledge of immigrant health.

Lack of global health knowledge places immigrants at risk of iatrogenic morbidity. Although global health education programs have grown in popularity, measurable impact is lacking. We previously surveyed 363 physicians in training across 15 programs in four countries in 2004 regarding basic parasite knowledge and recognition of Strongyloides risk through a theoretical case scenario. In 2005, the University of Minnesota implemented a formal global health training program (GHP). In 2009, the identical survey was repeated. Strongyloidiasis recognition increased from 11.1% (19/171) in 2004 to 39.4

The 'Other' face of health security: Reimagining epistemic attachments in global health.

The 'health security' paradigm has reshaped global health since Covid-19, framing infectious diseases as existential threats and targeting marginalised populations as risky 'others' to surveil and contain. However, its exclusionary consequences for those 'othered' remain underexamined, particularly from the perspective of lived experience. Drawing on ethnographic and archival case studies in Lebanon, Nepal, Serbia, and Syria (2021-2025), we examine health security's 'other' face, the systematic exclusion of migrant, rural, and displaced populations from protection, ranging from vaccine aparthe

Gaza's health emergency: impact of armed conflict and its global health repercussions.

The Gaza Strip, characterized by its dense population and persistent geopolitical instability, has experienced decades of armed conflict, resulting in systematic healthcare infrastructure deterioration. The healthcare delivery system has been collapsed by Israeli military operations, creating cascading effects that extend beyond regional boundaries. The medical facilities have been targeted, combined with humanitarian aid restrictions, has created unprecedented challenges in providing essential healthcare services to the affected population. The environmental degradation resulting from infrast

Quantitative Outcomes of a One Health approach to Study Global Health Challenges.

Having gained momentum in the last decade, the One Health initiative promotes a holistic approach to address complex global health issues. Before recommending its adoption to stakeholders, however, it is paramount to first compile quantitative evidence of the benefit of such an approach. The aim of this scoping review was to identify and summarize primary research that describes monetary and non-monetary outcomes following adoption of a One Health approach. An extensive literature search yielded a total of 42,167 references, of which 85 were included in the final analysis. The top two biotic h

Health system resilience and the health impacts of environmental degradation: A global analysis.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the impact of environmental degradation, focusing on air pollution and CO2 emissions, as key climate stressors on health outcomes, specifically pollution-related mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). The research explores how healthcare infrastructure, accessibility, quality, and policies contribute to climate resilience by mitigating pollution-related mortality and supporting adaptation to environmental stressors. STUDY DESIGN: Using panel data from 145 countries between 2009 and 2017, the study assesses both the direct effects of environmental

Global epidemiology of migraine and its implications for public health and health policy.

Migraine is one of more than 200 headache disorders but stands out among these as a major cause of population ill health. In migraine epidemiology, the key variable is prevalence, but, from the perspective of public health, prevalence is uninformative without burden estimates. Here, we discuss how migraine epidemiology, from a quite recent start, has evolved into the respectable though imperfect science of today, but with the legacy that much of the large corpus of older literature is of questionable reliability. Newer studies have benefited from a universally accepted definition of migraine,

A global analysis of One Health Networks and the proliferation of One Health collaborations.

There has been a renewed focus on threats to the human-animal-environment interface as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and investments in One Health collaborations are expected to increase. Efforts to monitor the development of One Health Networks (OHNs) are essential to avoid duplication or misalignment of investments. This Series paper shows the global distribution of existing OHNs and assesses their collective characteristics to identify potential deficits in the ways OHNs have formed and to help increase the effectiveness of investments. We searched PubMed, Google, Google Scholar, and r
