Interspecific Hybridization in Pilot Whales and Asymmetric Genetic Introgression in Northern Globicephala melas under the Scenario of Global Warming.

Pilot whales are two cetacean species (Globicephala melas and G. macrorhynchus) whose distributions are correlated with water temperature and partially overlap in some areas like the North Atlantic Ocean. In the context of global warming, distribution range shifts are expected to occur in species affected by temperature. Consequently, a northward displacement of the tropical pilot whale G. macrorynchus is expected, eventually leading to increased secondary contact areas and opportunities for interspecific hybridization. Here, we describe genetic evidences of recurrent hybridization between pil

Exploring the Potential of Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Separation of Blends of Fluorinated Gases with High Global Warming Potential.

The research on porous materials for the selective capture of fluorinated gases (F-gases) is key to reduce their emissions. Here, the adsorption of difluoromethane (R-32), pentafluoroethane (R-125), and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R-134a) is studied in four metal-organic frameworks (MOFs: Cu-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8, MOF-177, and MIL-53(Al)) and in one zeolite (ZSM-5) with the aim to develop technologies for the efficient capture and separation of high global warming potential blends containing these gases. Contrasting effects of biochar and compost on greenhouse gas emissions and the global warming potential of semi-arid cropping systems.

Agroecosystems in arid and semi-arid regions face growing risks of climate extremes and soil degradation. The addition of exogenous carbon can restore degraded soils by adding soil organic carbon, but its effects on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and global warming mitigation remain elusive. This study evaluated emissions of three major GHGs-nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4)-following soil amendment with biochar, compost, and a biochar + compost (BC) mixture. Biochar application reduced cumulative N2O-N and CH4-C emissions by 52% and 16%, respectively. Soil CH4-C emi

Rubber intercropping with arboreal and herbaceous species alleviated the global warming potential through the reduction of soil greenhouse gas emissions.

Agroforestry systems are known to enhance soil health and climate resilience, but their impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in rubber-based agroforestry systems across diverse configurations is not fully understood. Here, six representative rubber-based agroforestry systems (encompassing rubber trees intercropped with arboreal, shrub, and herbaceous species) were selected based on a preliminary investigation, including Hevea brasiliensis intercropping with Alpinia oxyphylla (AOM), Alpinia katsumadai (AKH), Coffea arabica (CAA), Theobroma cacao (TCA), Cinnamomum cassia (CCA), and Pandanus

Impact on beclometasone dipropionate pharmacokinetics when switching to a low global warming potential propellant in a pressurised metered-dose inhaler.

INTRODUCTION: Use of high global warming potential propellants (e.g., HFA-134a) for pressurised metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) is being phased down. Beclometasone dipropionate (BDP) is approved for the treatment of asthma in several countries via an HFA-134a propellant pMDI. This is being reformulated using the low global warming potential propellant HFA-152a. Two studies compared BDP pharmacokinetics delivered via pMDI using HFA-152a vs HFA-134a. METHODS: Both studies (N = 71/study) were single-dose (four inhalations of BDP), randomised, double-blind, crossover (Study 1, four-way; Study 2, tw

R290-Hydrofluoroolefin based low global warming potential refrigerant mixtures for room air conditioner: An energy, exergy, and environmental (3E) analysis.

Among the numerous residential appliances, window or split air conditioners are the most prevalent. The hydrochlorofluorocarbon and hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants used in those systems are causing a serious threat to the environment. In this study, R290-hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) mixtures are proposed as replacements for high-GWP substances (R410A and R22) in window air conditioning (WAC) units. Low-flammability alternatives like R290-R1234yf (50:50 and 60:40 by mass) and R290-R1234ze(E) (50:50 and 60:40 by mass) mixtures were considered promising refrigerants for this study. Climate-driven per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances transfer via Drosophila from landfills in China: A hidden biological vector under global warming.

Drosophila, as saprophagous and highly mobile insects, may serve as emerging biological vectors for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in landfill environments. This study quantified the bioconcentration potential of PFASs in Drosophila under both leachate and standard PFASs exposures across life stages, exploring the effects of physicochemical properties of PFASs on bioconcentration. A feature-based model integrating temperature and humidity was developed to simulate bioconcentration factors (BCFs), which were used to estimate PFAS transfer fluxes across national landfill sites under

Expansion to new habitats and a new commercial host (Malus domestica) by Anastrepha ludens (Tephritidae) likely influenced by global warming.

Anastrepha ludens (Mexican fruit-fly) is a highly polyphagous fruit fly species (Tephritidae) attacking wild and commercial fruit from Mexico to Panama. Here we report on a recent habitat and host range expansion as A. ludens lately started to attack apples (Malus domestica) in Mexico, a phenomenon likely influenced by global warming. We document natural infestations in apple-growing regions in the States of Nuevo León and Hidalgo, Mexico where A. ludens has started to attack the cultivars 'Golden Delicious', 'Rayada' and 'Criolla'. No infestations were found in the apple-growing region of Zac

Effects of Global Warming on Patients with Dementia, Motor Neuron or Parkinson's Diseases: A Comparison among Cortical and Subcortical Disorders.

Exposure to global warming can be dangerous for health and can lead to an increase in the prevalence of neurological diseases worldwide. Such an effect is more evident in populations that are less prepared to cope with enhanced environmental temperatures. In this work, we extend our previous research on the link between climate change and Parkinson's disease (PD) to also include Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementias (AD/D) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Motor Neuron Diseases (ALS/MND). One hundred and eighty-four world countries were clustered into four groups according to their climate i

From Mourning and Melancholia to Neurobiology in an Era of Global Warming, Pandemic Disease, and Social Chasms: Grief as a Requisite for Change.

We find ourselves in a unique time in history with the confluence of a pandemic, global warming, and social chasms felt throughout the world. In this article, it is suggested that the grieving process is necessary for progress. The article addresses grief from a psychodynamic lens and progresses through the neurobiological changes that occur in the grieving process. The article discusses grief as both a result of and a necessary response to COVID-19, global warming, and social unrest. It is argued that grief is a vital process in order to fully change as a society and move forward. The role of

Assessing global-warming induced soil organic matter and iron oxides depletion: Empirical insights into sorption and uptake of atrazine by plants.

Recent pesticide use is alarmingly high and unregulated in several parts of the world. Pesticide fate in soil is controlled by sorption processes which affect the subsequent transport and chemical reactivity in the environment, as well as uptake by plants. Sorption processes are dependent on soil composition and properties, but these are beginning to be affected by global warming-linked factors leading to soil depletion. Thus, it is vital to decipher soils' response, especially in the sub-Sahara (SS), to the depletion of some inherent components in the presence of pesticides. This was ascertai

A tick-borne encephalitis ceiling in Central Europe has moved upwards during the last 30 years: possible impact of global warming?

The geographic/temporal pattern of cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) registered in the Czech Republic since 1970 was analysed to verify the surmise of a global warming effect. Using a geographic information system, over 8,700 notified places of infection were pin-pointed on a map and overlaid with a digital elevation model to estimate the vertical distribution of the cases. Series of yearly disease ceilings (assessed alternatively as the respective maximum altitude or mean altitudes of the upper 5 or 10 cases) were tested against the null hypothesis of random elevation course and analysed

Climate crossroads: How global warming drives coronavirus emergence, the long COVID crisis of tomorrow, and AI's role in navigating our future.

This narrative review examines the critical nexus between climate change, coronavirus emergence, and Long COVID-a triad that may shape public health outcomes for generations. Climate change disrupts ecological balances that have historically limited viral spillover events, creating novel interfaces between wildlife reservoirs and human populations. The coronavirus family presents particular concern due to its diversity, adaptability, and demonstrated capacity for cross-species transmission. With over 200 coronaviruses identified in bat populations alone, this vast reservoir of genetic diversit

Do global environmental drivers' ocean acidification and warming exacerbate the effects of oil pollution on the physiological energetics of Scylla serrata?

Global climate change-induced ocean warming and acidification have complex reverberations on the physiological functioning of marine ectotherms. The Sundarbans estuarine system has been under threat for the past few decades due to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. In recent years, petroleum products' transportation and their usage have increased manifold, which causes accidental oil spills. The mud crab (Scylla serrata) is one of the most commercially exploited species in the Sundarbans. The key objective of this study was to delineate whether rearing under global environmental drivers (

Pharmaceutical assessment of low global warming potential alternatives to HFA-134a in a budesonide, glycopyrrolate, and formoterol fumarate pressurized metered-dose inhaler.

Manufacturers are adopting propellants for use in pressurized metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) that have lower global warming potentials (GWPs) than the propellants traditionally used in pMDIs. Hydrofluoroalkane (HFA)-134a has been used as the propellant in the pMDI used to deliver the fixed-dose triple combination of budesonide, glycopyrrolate, and formoterol fumarate (BGF); following successful clinical evaluation, the BGF pMDI is now being transitioned to the next generation propellant hydrofluoroolefin (HFO)-1234ze(E), which has near-zero GWP. We describe formulation development efforts that

Global warming and biological adaptation: Thermal priming buffers the impact of heatwaves on the reproductive health of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Human excessive exploitation of natural resources has undermined the fragile balance of many ecosystems, accelerating global warming at unprecedented rates. Marine heatwaves (MHWs) threaten organisms, whose reproductive cycle is temperature-dependent. The impact of climate change was evaluated on reproductive health of the gonochoric Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Specimens were divided into a control group, maintained constantly at 17 ± 1 °C, and groups pre-adapted separately to 28, 30 and 32 °C for 2 h, returned to the control temperature for 24 h, and then exposed to heat s

Inhibitory Effects of Antipsychotic Chlorpromazine on the Survival, Reproduction and Population Growth Other Than Neurotransmitters of Zooplankton in Light of Global Warming.

Global warming and environmental pollution have created a unique combination of abiotic and biotic stresses to zooplankton. However, little information is available on the effects of antipsychotic drugs commonly used to treat psychosis, such as chlorpromazine (CPZ), on non-target aquatic organisms in light of global warming. This study investigated how dopamine concentrations (DAC), acute toxicity and chronic toxicity of Brachionus calyciflorus changed in response to CPZ and gradually increasing temperatures. The results showed that the concentration range of rotifer DAC was 1.06~2.51 ng/g. At
