Glomus tympanicum tumors are the most common benign tumors of middle ear. Initially the leading symptoms are hearing loss and tinnitus. Other complications such as facial nerve paresis reflect deeper structures involvement. Sometimes the disease is masked by chronic pyogenic otitis media. It delays the diagnosis what we observed in one of three cases of chemodectoma presented. We present 3 cases of glomus tumor tympanicus that occurred in three women aged 60-68 years by the time of diagnosis. Localisation, size of the tumor and relation to other structures of the ear was made on the basis of c

INTRODUCTION: Paragangliomas are rare group of tumors originating from paraganglionic tissue. The most common site of occurrence of the head and neck paragangliomas are: carotid body, jugular foramen (glomus jugulare) and tympanic cavity (glomus tympanicum). Magnetic resonance (MR), computed tomography (CT) and angiography are the modalities of choice in detecting and characterizing paragangliomas.
AIM: The aim of this study was to compare different imaging techniques of CT and MR in visualization, detecting and characterizing paragangliomas of the jugular foramen. METHODY: Usefulness of CT a

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to perform a retrospective analysis of patients with jugulotympanic paragangliomas. We present the results according to the surgical approach applied in each case.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study presents the findings in 21 patients with jugulotympanic paragangliomas who were observed and treated in our department over a 12-year period (1999 to 2011). We performed a general otolaryngology exam, systemic evaluation and radiological exam. Surgical treatment was performed in 20 cases out of 21. In 1 case, treatment with stereotactic radiosurgery was c

Tumors of the inner ear and adjacent structures often present with hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo due to compression of the traversing cranial nerves. More than 90% of the tumors of the inner ear with or without expansion into the cerebellopontine angle are histologically diagnosed as vestibular schwannomas. Less common tumorous lesions include ectopic meningiomas located in the petrous bone, glomus tympanicum paragangliomas or endolymphatic sac tumors (ELST) originating in the vestibular recess. Most tumors are sporadic, but hereditary disorders have to be considered. Bilateral vestibular

Eighteen paragangliomas of the head and neck (11 carotid body tumors, four glomus tympanicum tumors, three glomus jugulare tumors) were studied retrospectively. Tissue from each of these tumors was immunostained for the presence of serotonin, a variety of neuropeptide hormones, and the enzyme neuron-specific enolase (NSE). Seven tumors were studied by electron microscopy. The clinical and laboratory records were reviewed for evidence of endocrine activity or metabolic imbalance. All tumors displayed diffuse and intense immunostaining for NSE. In addition, a wide variety of hormonal substances

Von Haller, in 1743, first described the carotid body and was so impressed with the richness of its innervation that he called it 'ganglion minutum', thinking it to be a sympathetic ganglion. Valentine, in 1840, saw a peculiar structure in the tympanic canaliculus in which a nerve cell was present and called it 'gangliolum tympanicum'. Almost 100 years later, in 1941, Stacey Guild reported the presence of some structures near the wall of the jugular bulb and described them as 'glomus jugulare'. Following this report, Rosenwaser (1945) and Otani were able to make a correct classification of the

The multiple paragangliomas are rare tumours, with slow evolution, posing diagnostic and therapeutic problems. The carotid and jugulo-tympanic localization are the most frequent, and the aortic localization is very infrequent. The association of two, three and four localization is possible in the multiple forms. These multiple localizations are more frequent in familial forms. Surgical removal is the first intention treatment of these tumours. In the multiple forms, the therapeutic strategy must be adapted to each case: usually, the intervention begins by the carotid localization. We report tw

Tinnitus, a buzzing or ringing in the ear, may be pulsatile or continuous (nonpulsatile). The distinction, with a detailed clinical evaluation, determines the most appropriate imaging study. Pulsatile tinnitus suggests a vascular neoplasm, vascular anomaly, or vascular malformation. Most of the neoplasms are glomus tympanicum and glomus jugulare tumors. Vascular anomalies may cause pulsatile tinnitus, but the mechanism is unknown, and another (treatable) cause should be sought. Most neoplasms and anomalies are best seen on bone algorithm computed tomographic (CT) studies. Dural vascular malfor

Adenomas are very rare tumors of the middle ear. They are benign neoplasms originating from the glandular components of the mucous membrane of the middle ear. The middle ear adenoma was first described by Hyams and Michaels in 1976, which was named an adenomatous tumor. This article reports the case of a 50-year-old female patient, who presented with recurrent right-sided dull otalgia and pulse synchronous tinnitis, which began 1 year prior to presentation, with the suspected diagnosis of a glomus tympanicum tumor. Following the otorhinolaryngological examination and imaging an unclear mesotym

Problems of classification of certain growth processes were discussed using jugular body tumors to find out cytological criteria for characterizing growth traits. For this purpose light microscopical (9 cases), electron microscopical (6 cases) and enzyme histochemical investigations (3 cases) were performed. For comparison 4 carotid body tumors were examined. We are inclined to assume a neoplastic nature. An explanation as hyperplastic proliferation is refuted because a remarkable cellular variation in size and form, only sparse nerve fibers and lacking synaptic contacts, because submicroscopi

Head and neck paragangliomas (HNPs) are rare, usually benign hyper vascularized neuroendocrine tumors that traditionally have been treated by surgery, with or without endovascular embolization, or, more recently stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). The aim of our study is to determine the clinical and radiographic effectiveness of SRS for treatment of HNPs. A systematic search of electronic databases was performed, and 37 articles reporting 11,174 patients (1144 tumors) with glomus jugulare (GJT: 993, 86.9%), glomus tympanicum (GTT: 94, 8.2%), carotid body tumors (CBTs: 28, 2.4%), and glomus vagal

Jugulo-tympanic paraganglioma is the most commonly recognized neoplasia involving the middle ear, arising from chemopressure receptors. Clinical presentation is variable, with otalgia, dizziness and cranial nerve palsies. This tumor usually occurs in middle aged women and its presentation may be familiar, sporadic, bilateral or multicentric. In the present case the patients presented with otalgia and bradyacusia diagnosed with chronic otitis. A bleeding polypoid lesion in middle ear was seen during surgery. Frozen section of intraoperative specimen showed monomorphic cells organized into nests

We discuss the unusual presentation and subsequent diagnosis of a patient with a glomus tympanicum tumor, also known as middle ear paraganglioma, which is a rare and benign tumor of the middle ear that usually presents with pulsatile tinnitus, cranial nerve pathology, hearing loss, and dizziness. The patient was a 35-year-old female with no past medical or surgical history who presented with a three-year history of mild left-ear hearing loss. The initial examination was negative for otalgia or otorrhea but was notable for a mass filling her left ear canal. The patient denied pulsatile tinnitus

We conducted a retrospective study of the long-term functional results of surgery for head and neck paragangliomas. Our study population was made up of 9 patients--4 men and 5 women, aged 22 to 59 years (mean: 46.6; median: 51)--who had undergone surgical excision of a head and neck paraganglioma from January 2002 through December 2006 in the ENT Department at Pugliese-Ciaccio Hospital in Catanzaro, Italy. Of the 9 paragangliomas, 4 were carotid body tumors, 2 were glomus tympanicum tumors, and 3 were glomus vagale tumors. None of the cases was bilateral or hereditary. Complete tumor resection

A 62-year old woman presented with a 1-month history of left otalgia, facial palsy and hearing loss. She had a background of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and stage 2 endometrial adenocarcinoma, treated 18 months ago. Computed tomography scan showed erosion of the skull base and temporal bone. She was referred to the otolaryngology team with a diagnosis of necrotising otitis externa. On clinical examination, there was an exophytic, necrotic lesion in the ear canal arising from the posterior canal wall. A subsequent magnetic resonance imaging scan showed a lesion located in the left j

INTRODUCTION: Majority of petrous bone and lateral skull base pathologies are benign in nature. The complex anatomy usually warrants an extensive approach with associated morbidity.
CASE SUMMARY: Two cases of petrous bone cholesteatoma (1 congenital cholesteatoma with facial palsy and 1 acquired cholesteatoma) and a case of glomus tympanicum were treated with exclusive endoscopic transcanal approach. The cases of petrous cholesteatoma were addressed with trans-promontorial and infra-cochlear approaches. The mean operative time was approximately 140 min. No CSF otorrhoea was noticed in the pos
