In our experience of 171 glossectomies for recurrence, salvage partial glossectomy yields 50% of local control. Myo-cutaneous flap allows wide total glossectomy without total laryngectomy. This procedure may improve the local control. Of 25 patients treated by this technique, 2 deceased before the 45th post-operative day, 15 swallow correctly and 11 have a good speech. The survival rate is 10/21 at 6 months, 7/16 at 12 and 6/13 at 18. A local failure was observed in 7 and 6 have a second primary in the upper respiratory and digestive tract. Total glossectomy without total laryngectomy is only

While oropharyngeal cancer treatment regimens, including surgical resection, irradiation, and chemotherapy, are effective at removing tumors, they lead to muscle atrophy, denervation, and fibrosis, contributing to the pathogenesis of oropharyngeal dysphagia - difficulty swallowing. Current standard of care of rehabilitative tongue strengthening and swallowing exercises is ineffective. Here, we evaluate an alternative approach utilizing an acellular and injectable biomaterial to preserve muscle content and reduce fibrosis of the tongue after injury. Skeletal muscle extracellular matrix (SKM) hy

Glossectomy combined with radiotherapy causes different levels of tongue function disorders and leads to severe malocclusion, with poor periodontal status in cancer survivors. Although affected patients require regular access to orthodontic care, special considerations are crucial for treatment planning. This case report describes the satisfactory orthodontic management for the correction of severe dental crowding in a 43-year-old female 6 years after treatment for tongue cancer with total glossectomy combined with radiotherapy, to envision the possibility of orthodontic care for oral cancer s

OBJECTIVE: Macroglossia is a characteristic feature of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), commonly treated with reduction glossectomy to restore form and function. There exists no consensus on the perioperative management of these patients undergoing tongue reduction surgery, including anecdotal information regarding how long postoperative intubation should be maintained. The aim of this study is to evaluate the necessity of prolonged postoperative intubation in patients receiving tongue reduction surgery via the surgical and anesthetic management methods at our center.
DESIGN: Retrospective

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated temporary modifications in the current head and neck oncology treatment paradigm. Till date, no definite treatment for COVID-19 has been discovered. Considering the situation of the global COVID-19 outbreak, methods that minimize patient visits with no compromise in efficacy should be considered. The optimal method for tongue reconstruction has not been determined yet. The artificial bilayer membrane has been used as mucosal substitute in few cases of tongue reconstruction with promising results.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases of t

Intraoral surgery for tongue cancer usually induces speech disorders that have a negative impact on communication and quality of life. Studies have documented the benefit of tongue ultrasound imaging as a visual articulatory feedback for speech rehabilitation. This study aims to assess specifically the complementary contribution of visual feedback to visual illustration (i.e. the display of ultrasound video of target language movements) for the speech rehabilitation of glossectomised patients. Two therapy conditions were used alternately for ten glossectomised French patients randomly divided

BACKGROUND: The surgical management and reconstruction after ablation of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue and floor of mouth are quite challenging. If not reconstructed properly, the deficits resulting from the extirpation of even relatively small (T1 and T2) tumors of the tongue can impact speech and deglutition via tongue tethering and poor anterolateral mobility. Functional outcome studies regarding the utility of the pedicled facial artery musculamucosal (FAMM) flap for reconstruction of partial glossectomy defects are limited.
METHODS: This is a retrospective single institution

BACKGROUND: Few studies on tongue reconstruction provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary analysis examining defect size, flap selection, function, and long-term survival. This report presents the largest study in the literature evaluating free flap reconstruction after glossectomy.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients undergoing free flap glossectomy reconstruction from 2000 to 2012 was performed.
RESULTS: In this review, 268 patients were identified. Resections involving the tongue only included 59 partial glossectomies, 86 hemiglossectomies, 28 subtotal glossectomies, and 24 tota

Patients who undergo tongue reconstruction over time may develop gradual worsening of dysarthria and dysphagia secondary to flap atrophy. At our institution, these patients undergo a secondary flap onlay procedure for augmentation of the neotongue. We review a total of 11 patients with total glossectomy defect who underwent secondary tongue augmentation with secondary onlay free flap consisting of radial forearm free flap (n = 6) and rectus free flap (n = 5). There was improvement in swallowing in 7 of 11 patients. Five (45.4%) patients achieved gastric tube independence. Seven (63.6%) patient

Combined orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery and partial glossectomy were simultaneously performed in an adult male patient with mandibular prognathism and open bite from the lower right to the left first molars. Total active treatment period was 15 months. During the retention period, a tooth positioner was given to obtain proper interdigitation from set-up models. The post-surgical occlusion has been stable without any complication of the mandible and the tongue.

Oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity. Treatment of this tumor is based on surgical removal with a centimeter margin, which can be combined with radiotherapy. This case report details a late necrosis of an anterolateral thigh flap used for oncological reconstruction of a subtotal glossectomy requiring comprehensive management. A 61-year-old patient, with no medical history, was treated for a large squamous cell carcinoma with subtotal glossectomy combined with adjuvant radiotherapy. During radiotherapy, radiomucositis appeared on the lateral sides

The purpose of this clinical report was to describe the use of a piezographic impression associated with computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) for teeth setup and of digital tools for neuro-musculo-kinetic analyses. An edentulous patient with hemiglossectomy and heavily resorbed mandible consulted for complete denture rehabilitation to improve their masticatory function and speech. Master casts, wax rims, and piezographic impression were scanned for digital prosthetic work. Two digital try-ins were performed to respect the neutral zone: try-in 1 with posterior crossb

Various geometric structures, such as numerous triangles, are prevalent in the neck. Despite the fact that many of the neck's anatomical triangles have been well documented, others have been almost forgotten about. The repertoire of head and neck cancer surgeons should include an in-depth understanding of these forgotten triangles. This article seeks to contribute valuable information to the existing scientific literature by shedding light on these neglected triangles, which have significant surgical relevance. In this technical report, we provide a detailed description of a technique that emp

Dysphagia is the main impairment arising from glossectomy for tongue cancer treatment. The study aimed to determine if an eight-week training protocol paired with accuracy tasks and swallowing exercises is effective and can improve tongue strength and swallowing in patients after tongue resection. Maximum isometric pressures, tongue endurance, swallowing pressures, mealtime duration, and oropharyngeal swallow function were studied in patients with moderate to severe dysphagia after glossectomy. Twenty-five (25) patients and thirty-one (31) healthy participants were enrolled in the study. The t

The evaluation of speech outcomes after resection and reconstruction of the oral tongue remains largely unsystematic. A cross-sectional study was performed to analyse the speech outcomes of patients who underwent curative treatment with appropriate reconstruction. Sixty-nine patients were assessed for speech intelligibility and phonetics using a validated speech intelligibility assessment tool in the local language. Volume defects were classified as class I (less than one third), II (one third to half), III (half to two-thirds), or IV (two-thirds to total glossectomy). Defect location was defi

INTRODUCTION: Major glossectomy is the treatment of choice in locally advanced tongue cancer. It remains the only option in the presence of recurrent or residual disease. The long-term outcomes for patients undergoing major glossectomy have traditionally been poor, with significant morbidity and poor oncological outcomes. The aim of this study was to report on oncological outcomes in patients undergoing major glossectomy.
METHODS: All patients undergoing major glossectomy between 2014 and 2018 were included in the study. The data of 85 patients with advanced carcinoma of the oral tongue were

INTRODUCTION: Cancer of the oral cavity and oropharynx presents aggressive behavior and its diagnosis is, in most cases, performed in advanced stages. Total glossectomy is a therapeutic option in locally advanced cancer, and the only one in the recurrent or residual disease, after chemoradiotherapy.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical-epidemiological profile, postoperative complications, survival rates and functional aspects of patients with oral cavity and oropharynx cancer after total glossectomy.
METHODS: It was a retrospective study where 22 patients were included with oral cavity and or
