Effect of perinatal sterile gloves on neonatal mortality: a post hoc analysis of a randomised clinical trial in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Sterile gloves, an inexpensive method of hand hygiene, are attributed both protective and useless characteristics concerning neonatal mortality. This study aimed to perform a post hoc secondary analysis of a cluster-randomised controlled trial (cRCT) to examine the association between intrapartum sterile gloves and neonatal mortality. METHODS: Data from the Zambia Chlorhexidine Application Trial, a cRCT of 4% chlorhexidine umbilical cord care in Zambia from 2011-2013, were analyzed. A randomised controlled trial (RCT) (NCT01241318) provided pregnant women with clean delivery kits

The combined use of moisturizers and occlusive gloves: an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Protective gloves are used in the workplace to protect the hands from occupational hazards, but side effects from glove use are frequently reported. Among these side effects, irritant skin reactions are common. OBJECTIVE: The present study was undertaken to investigate whether applying a moisturizer to compromised skin before wearing an occlusive glove could reduce skin irritation. METHODS: Healthy volunteers had both hands immersed in a sodium lauryl sulfate solution twice daily for 2 days. After each immersion, one hand had a moisturizer applied and both hands were put in occlu

Boxing and mixed martial arts: preliminary traumatic neuromechanical injury risk analyses from laboratory impact dosage data.

OBJECT: In spite of ample literature pointing to rotational and combined impact dosage being key contributors to head and neck injury, boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) padding is still designed to primarily reduce cranium linear acceleration. The objects of this study were to quantify preliminary linear and rotational head impact dosage for selected boxing and MMA padding in response to hook punches; compute theoretical skull, brain, and neck injury risk metrics; and statistically compare the protective effect of various glove and head padding conditions. METHODS: An instrumented Hybrid II

Glove-related hand urticaria.

BACKGROUND: Glove-related hand urticaria is probably underdiagnosed and is an important differential diagnosis in suspected cases of contact allergy. CASE PRESENTATION: A nurse in her twenties presented with recurrent immediate-onset erythematous eruption with burning sensation on the dorsal hands after wearing disposable gloves. This occurred irrespective of the type of disposable gloves used. Patch testing, serological analysis for latex IgE and prick tests with latex and different glove materials all gave negative results. Dermographism was demonstrated on her back, and symptoms were repro

Update on occupational natural rubber latex allergy.

Health care workers are a known risk group for occupational immediate type allergy to latex gloves, but users of household and other protective gloves have been less extensively studied. This article shows that non-health care workers form an even larger group with natural rubber latex allergy, which often is work related. Hand eczema and atopy are the most frequent risk factors for sensitization, therefore, dermatologists should be especially aware of the diagnostic methods and prevention.

Permeability of Organic Solvents Through Two-Layer Safety Gloves Determined by a Gravimetric Method.

Organic solvents are harmful to humans and many of them are recognized as carcinogens. Therefore it is necessary to protect hands from contact with them. Most methods for testing solvent resistance of gloves use Gas Chromatography. However, these methods are expensive and so complex that they present application problems for most glove producers and users. A simple gravimetric method to test solvent resistance of gloves was developed. It was tested by measuring permeability of organic solvents such as white spirit, acetone, isopropyl alcohol, benzene, p-xylene, trichloroethylene, through glove

The adverse skin reactions of health care workers using personal protective equipment for COVID-19.

In December 2019, a new coronavirus was found in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, and spread rapidly throughout the country, attracting global attention. On February 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially named the disease caused by 2019-nCoV coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). With the increasing number of cases, health care workers (HCWs) from all over China volunteered to work in Hubei Province. Because of the strong infectivity of COVID-19, HCWs need to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), such as N95 masks, latex gloves, and protective clothing. Due to the long-term use of

The Impact of Disinfecting Non-Sterile Disposable Gloves on the Level of Microbiological Contamination in Clinical Practice.

Gloves, used in conjunction with hand hygiene, are designed to protect healthcare personnel from direct contact with blood, body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials, which is critical for reducing the transmission of microorganisms. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze available studies on the disinfection of disposable, non-sterile gloves as a method of reducing the risk of microbial contamination in everyday clinical practice. A systematic review was conducted in the fourth quarter of 2025. A total of 317 records were initially retrieved from the five databases (EB

Rubber: new allergens and preventive measures.

Natural rubber latex (NRL) and rubber accelerators are well-known causes of occupational skin diseases. The latest epidemiological data on rubber allergy show that rubber additives are still among the allergens most strongly associated with occupational contact dermatitis, however, a decrease in NRL allergy has been confirmed. A review of recent publications on rubber allergens based on the Pubmed database is presented. New glove manufacturing processes have been developed, such as low-protein natural rubber gloves, vulcanisation accelerator-free gloves, or specific-purpose gloves containing a

Using a quantitative assessment of propulsion biomechanics in wheelchair racing to guide the design of personalized gloves: a case study.

This study with a T-52 class wheelchair racing athlete aimed to combine quantitative biomechanical measurements to the athlete's perception to design and test different prototypes of a new kind of rigid gloves. Three personalized rigid gloves with various, fixed wrist extension angles were prototyped and tested on a treadmill in a biomechanics laboratory. The prototype with 45° wrist extension was the athlete's favourite as it reduced his perception of effort. Biomechanical assessment and user-experience data indicated that his favourite prototype increased wrist stability throughout the propu

Skin protection for hairdressers.

The application of protective creams in the hairdressing trade forms part of a complex concept for the prevention of occupational skin disorders. To date, no comparative controlled intervention studies have been carried out using different skin-protective creams. Previously published skin protection plans concerning barrier creams for the hairdressing trade are fairly general or rudimentary, reflecting our still limited knowledge on the subject. Bioengineering studies have even demonstrated a paradoxical effect of a certain skin-protective foam designed for hairdressers. Regarding other barrie

Double gloving to reduce surgical cross-infection.

BACKGROUND: The invasive nature of surgery, with its increased exposure to blood, means that during surgery there is a high risk of transfer of pathogens. Pathogens can be transferred through contact between surgical patients and the surgical team, resulting in post-operative or blood borne infections in patients or blood borne infections in the surgical team. Both patients and the surgical team need to be protected from this risk. This risk can be reduced by implementing protective barriers such as wearing surgical gloves. Wearing two pairs of surgical gloves, as opposed to one pair, is consi
