BACKGROUND: Human gnathostomiasis is a food-borne zoonosis. Its etiological agents are the third-stage larvae of Gnathostoma spp. Human gnathostomiasis is often reported in developing countries, but it is also an emerging disease in developed countries in non-endemic areas. The recent surge in cases of human gnathostomiasis is mainly due to the increasing consumption of raw freshwater fish, amphibians, and reptiles.
METHODS: This article reviews the literature on Gnathostoma spp. and the disease that these parasites cause in humans. We review the literature on the life cycle and pathogenesis

Gnathostomiasis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by some species of helminthes belonging to the genus Gnathostoma . It has a wide clinical presentation and its diagnosis is a challenge. Tropical and subtropical countries are endemic, and its transmission is associated with eating raw or undercooked meat from fresh water animals. Increasing global tourism and consuming exotic foods have produced a noticeable rise in cases of the disease in the last decades. However, in our country, there has not been any confirmed case of gnathostomiasis previously reported. We present the case of a 63-year-old C

Intraocular infestation by live Gnathostoma spinigerum is a rare occurrence in humans. Most of the published reports are from South-East Asia. We report a case of ocular gnathostomiasis from Western Maharashtra, where the worm was removed live from the anterior chamber of the left eye. Identification of the worm was confirmed by light microscopy.

We report a case of cauda equina syndrome caused by Gnathostoma spinigerum, which was confirmed by an immunoblotting test. MR imaging of the lumbosacral spine showed long, segmented hyperintensity along the cauda equina with irregular enhancement on the postcontrast study. The conus medullaris was slightly enlarged with abnormal enhancement. The patient was treated with corticosteroids, and her clinical condition improved. MR imaging, 9 months after treatment, showed the condition to be completely resolved.

We reported a case of gnathostomiasis in a 42-year-old woman with an unclear history of eating high-risk foods and had a non-migratory skin lesion, negative serological testing and normal blood eosinophil counts. A diagnosis of gnathostomiasis was based on a live, third-stage Gnathostoma spinigerum larva that was randomly taken from the patient's skin lesion by herself. The presenting case report demonstrates challenges in correctly diagnose cutaneous gnathostomiasis even in endemic countries due to atypical skin lesions, negative serology testing and the absence of eosinophilia and thus, the

Gnathostomiasis has rarely been described outside endemic countries. We report on a series of 5 patients (4 females, 1 male, mean age 42.2 years) who returned to France from South-East Asia and presented with cutaneous gnathostomiasis. The cutaneous lesions appeared within a mean period of 62 d (range 10-150 d) after return. They consisted of creeping eruptions in 3 patients (in addition one also had papules, one had nodules and hepatitis, and one had hepatitis; all 3 had profound asthenia) and recurring migratory swellings in 2 patients. The mean eosinophil count was 1546/mm3 (range 398-3245/

A 42-year-old woman from Culiacan in the Sinaloa State of Mexico presented with a four-year history of migratory, pruritic, painful swellings of the face. Palpebral edema with conjunctival erythema developed when lesions developed near the eye. Routine eye examination showed a mobile worm in the anterior chamber. Following surgical removal, the parasite was identified by light and electron microscopy as an advanced third-stage larva of Gnathostoma sp. This prevalence of this helminthiasis may be increasing in areas where eating freshwater raw fish ("cebiche") is customary.

Gnathostoma doloresi parasitizes the gastric wall of wild (boars) and domestic (pigs) swine (Sus scrofa). Its larvae cause cutaneous larva migrans in humans. Amphibians, reptiles and a freshwater fish are infected with the advanced 3rd stage larvae. Prevalence of G. doloresi larvae were surveyed in several snakes, especially in a common frog-eating snake (Rhabdophis tigrinus). All species of snakes examined were infected with G. doloresi larvae suggesting that snakes are important reservoir hosts. Prevalence of G. doloresi larvae in frog-eating snakes was lower than that found in mammal-eating

A healthy young man from Sri Lanka, currently living in Switzerland, consulted at the University Hospital of Geneva with a history of painful erythema and swelling of the left forearm. Laboratory tests showed a slight eosinophilia. Western blot serology for Gnathostoma spp, inconclusive at presentation, became positive 2 weeks later.

Human gnathostomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Gnathostoma nematode infection. A rapid, reliable, and practical immunoassay, named dot immuno-gold filtration assay (DIGFA), was developed to supporting clinical diagnosis of gnathostomiasis. The practical tool detected anti-Gnathostoma-specific IgG4 in human serum using crude extract of third-stage larvae as antigen. The result of the test was shown by anti-human IgG4 monoclonal antibody conjugated colloidal gold. The sensitivity and specificity of the test were both 100% for detection in human sera from patients with gnathostomiasis (13

This case report describes the second reported case of gnathostomiasis acquired in Brazil. The French traveller returned from a sport fishing trip from Tocantins where he was repeatedly consuming raw freshwater fish marinated with lemon juice. Gnathostoma infection was diagnosed based on clinical symptoms, dietary record and by detection of specific antibodies in the blood.

A 45-year-old woman presented for evaluation of a solitary pruritic nodule on the abdomen that suddenly appeared 3 weeks before. She was healthy without a significant medical history, travel history, exposures, medications, or pets. She reported that she consumed sushi at least weekly in the city of San Francisco. A punch biopsy revealed a superficial and deep perivascular and interstitial infiltrates consisting of lymphocytes, plasma cells, and many eosinophils. Most notably, there was a parasite centered in the reticular dermis with prominent lateral chords, a well-developed muscular esophag

PURPOSE: To describe the use of ultrasound biomicroscopy in the identification of an intraocular nematode in a case of suspected nematode-induced uveitis
DESIGN: Observational case report.
METHOD: UBM was performed under topical anesthesia in a patient with acute painful uveitis suspected to result from an intraocular nematode. Clinical examination did not reveal the nematode.
RESULTS: Over a 6-minute time span, serial UBM examinations revealed the nematode to move from the iris root into the posterior chamber through the zonules. Subsequently, it was seen adhering to the cornea and could b

The present study was to investigate the dynamics of eosinophil in peripheral blood of patients with cutaneous gnathostomiasis before and after worm removal. The total of 28 proven cases of cutaneous gnathostomiasis treated by albendazole were included in the present study. The absolute eosinophil count (AEC) was higher than 500/ul during infestation in almost all the patients, the positive rate was 89%, and significantly decreased to normal level after receiving albendazole and worm removal within 3 months in 96%. In conclusion, an increas of AEC is another important hallmarks of cutaneous gn

This is a report of a fourteen year old Thai-girl who presented with acute hemiparesis because of intracranial haemorrhage six weeks after immigrating to Germany. Marked blood eosinophilia and raised IgE in serum in comparison with her origin led to the suspected diagnosis of parasitosis. Angiography showed mycotic aneurysm typical for cerebral gnathostomiasis one of the major causes of intracranial haemorrhage in children in Thailand. This diagnosis was confirmed by detecting specific antibodies against Gnathostoma spinigerum in serum and CSF by Western blot. Therapy was started with albendaz
