Artificial intelligence tools to assess different levels of activity performed by semi-wild horses in grassland ecosystems.

In order to understand the role of horses in ecosystems and to effectively use their grazing in the protection of grasslands, it is important to assess where they primarily stay, followed by whether these habitats are used for grazing or resting. The main goal of the study was the model development based on artificial intelligence tools which allow to distinguish the basic levels of activity performed by horses using data from an accelerometer mounted in a collar worn by animals. The model calibration was based on direct observations of five randomly selected Polish primitive horse mares. In o

Screening of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria and their growth-promoting activities for Stipa purpurea in alpine grassland.

AIMS: Stipa purpurea is one of the dominant grass species in alpine grassland and plays a crucial role in safeguarding the ecosystem and restoring degraded grassland. To enhance the population dominance of S. purpurea and effectively prevent further grassland degradation. In this study, we screened high-efficiency plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) from rhizosphere soil samples, with the aim of improving the growth activity of S. purpurea through spraying PGPR. METHODS AND RESULTS: We selected functional medium for the isolation of PGPR from the rhizosphere soils of five distinct sam

A restatement of the natural science evidence base concerning grassland management, grazing livestock and soil carbon storage.

Approximately a third of all annual greenhouse gas emissions globally are directly or indirectly associated with the food system, and over a half of these are linked to livestock production. In temperate oceanic regions, such as the UK, most meat and dairy is produced in extensive systems based on pasture. There is much interest in the extent to which such grassland may be able to sequester and store more carbon to partially or completely mitigate other greenhouse gas emissions in the system. However, answering this question is difficult due to context-specificity and a complex and sometimes i

Grassland ecology system: A critical reservoir and dissemination medium of antibiotic resistance in Xilingol Pasture, Inner Mongolia.

Antibiotic resistance is a major threat to human health. It is necessary to explore all the potential sources and comprehend the pathways that antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are transmitted. In this study, by applying high-throughput quantitative PCR and high-throughput sequencing, ARGs and microbial community structure were determined, to understand the reservoirs and spread of ARGs in the Xilingol grassland system. A total of 151,140 and 138 different ARGs were observed in manure, soil, and water samples, respectively. Only 12 ARGs were shared in all environmental and animal manure sampl

Stress responses investigated; application of zinc and heat to Terrestrial Model Ecosystems from heavy metal polluted grassland.

This study tested the hypothesis that soils with a deprived biodiversity due to metal pollution are less stable than non-polluted soils, containing a more diverse community. For this, soils were sampled from specific grasslands in the Netherlands that contain elevated heavy metal concentrations (Cu, Pb and Zn). Soils that showed the largest differences in metal concentrations were incubated in the laboratory using Terrestrial Model Ecosystems (TMEs). This approach enabled simultaneous measurement of structural (bacteria, nematodes, enchytraeids, earthworms) and functional parameters (nitrogen

Small mammalian herbivores at moderate densities facilitate livestock growth by improving vegetation composition in grasslands.

Small mammals and large herbivores have co-evolved in grasslands for millions of years, yet how they interact remains unclear. Although large herbivores can significantly affect the smaller ones, the reverse effect is largely unknown. On the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, plateau pikas (Ochotona curzoniae) are often considered pests that compete with livestock at high densities. Using field experiments, we show that the presence of pikas facilitates weight gains of yaks (Bos grunniens) by improving vegetation composition at a moderate density level. Compared to the pika-present treatment, pika remov

Microbial network and its relationship with plants reflect the restoration of grasslands during a five-year period.

INTRODUCTION: The ecological restoration of degraded grassland has been widely studied in terms of plants, soil, and microbes. The microbial network and its relationship with plants are essential indicators of the grassland restoration process. Across restoration statuses, how the microbial network affects plant-microbe interactions and reflects grassland restoration remains unclear. METHODS: We examined changes in soil microbial networks, plant biomass, and soil properties across early, moderate, and late restoration, as well as stable community status, over a 5-year restoration period. We c

Responses of soil greenhouse gas fluxes to land management in forests and grasslands: A global meta-analysis.

Land management practices significantly influence soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Despite individual measurements of the impacts of forest and grassland ecosystem management practices (FGEM) on GHG emissions, a comprehensive global-scale synthesis and comparison remain absent. In this study, a global meta-analysis was conducted to analyze the responses of three key soil GHGs, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), to various FGEM, including forest burning (FB) and thinning (FT), grassland grazing (GG), fencing (GF), and mowing (GM) based on 1643 observatio

Antibiotic overuse and allergy-related diseases: an epidemiological cross-sectional study in the grasslands of Northern China.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that the use of antibiotics early in life significantly increases the risk of asthma in children. It is unclear whether antibiotics are more commonly used in patients with allergy-related diseases. METHODS: A multistage, clustered and random sampling with a field-interviewer-administrated survey study was performed to investigate if there was multiple use of antibiotics (MUA) in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR), conjunctivitis, chronic urticaria (CU), and asthma in the grasslands of northern China. MUA was defined as antibiotic usage for at least 3 d

[Landscape components favouring the occurrence of anthrax in the Flooding Pampa grasslands (Buenos Aires province, Argentina)].

The authors studied the landscape components that favour the occurrence of anthrax in the Flooding Pampa grasslands (Buenos Aires province, Argentina). They made spatial locations of anthrax outbreaks diagnosed by registered veterinary laboratories in the study area's zone of influence. As variables for study, they differentiated areas that are flooded for 20% of the time or more from primary and secondary runoff channels. They also identified areas with low-productivity pasture. Logistic regression analysis of farm populations revealed that landscape components favouring the occurrence of ant

Deep learning of fossil pollen morphology reveals 25,000 y of ecological change in eastern African grasslands.

Grass (Poaceae) pollen is largely overlooked in investigations of grassland evolution because the pollen of most species cannot be differentiated using traditional optical microscopy. However, the combination of superresolution microscopy and deep learning enables the capture and quantification of distinct morphological variation across the pollen of grass species. Using a semisupervised deep-learning strategy, we trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) on superresolution images of known modern and unlabeled fossil grass pollen. We used learned CNN features to estimate taxonomic diversity

Effects of different land use types on grassland soil and vegetation in the agropastoral transition zone of northern China.

As terrestrial ecosystems of the world, grassland ecosystems play a vital role in maintaining climate stability. However, the effects of different land use types on grassland health are currently unclear. To investigate the effects of various land use types on grassland health, the Xilamuren grassland (with an area of approximately 1000 km2) in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, which features multiple land use types, was chosen as the research subject. Response of soil physicochemical properties and vegetation characteristics under four land use types, including enclosure, grazing,

Land use change in a temperate grassland soil: afforestation effects on chemical properties and their ecological and mineralogical implications.

The current change in land use of grassland in the temperate region of South America is a process associated with the worldwide expansion of annual crops and afforestation with fast growing exotic species. This last cultivation has particularly been the subject of numerous studies showing its negative effects on soil (acidification, loss of organic matter and base cations, among others). However its effects on the mineral fraction are not yet known, as it is generally considered as one of the slowest responses to changes. This stimulated the present study in order to assess whether the composi

Temporal Pattern and Metabolic Mechanisms of Ecosystem Carbon Fluxes Under Decadal-Long Nitrogen Enrichment in an Alpine Grassland.

Due to widespread nitrogen limitation, reactive nitrogen input is expected to stimulate vegetation carbon fixation, thus potentially offsetting the decomposition-induced soil carbon losses. However, this projection is largely based on short-term measurements. The crucial question is whether such responses persist over time. Combining a decade-long nitrogen-addition experiment in an alpine grassland with biochemical and plant metabolomics analyses, we showed that a decade of nitrogen addition elicited only a transient increase in net ecosystem productivity (NEP; balance between ecosystem carbon

Soil carbonyl sulfide exchange in relation to microbial community composition: insights from a managed grassland soil amendment experiment.

The viability of carbonyl sulfide (COS) measurements for partitioning ecosystem-scale net carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes into photosynthesis and respiration critically depends on our knowledge of non-leaf sinks and sources of COS in ecosystems. We combined soil gas exchange measurements of COS and CO2 with next-generation sequencing technology (NGS) to investigate the role of soil microbiota for soil COS exchange. We applied different treatments (litter and glucose addition, enzyme inhibition and gamma sterilization) to soil samples from a temperate grassland to manipulate microbial composition a

Data on the stated willingness to accept collective agri-environmental schemes for biodiversity conservation of European grassland farmers.

We present a data set on the stated willingness to accept collective agri-environmental schemes for biodiversity conservation of farmers managing grassland in six European case studies: Austria (AT), Switzerland (CH), Germany (DE), Estonia (EE), Ireland (IE), and Norway (NO). The survey was conducted between spring 2024 and 2025 and consisted of two parts: 1) a choice experiment; and 2) questions about farmers' and farm characteristics, attitudes, and preferences. In the choice experiment (Part 1), farmers were presented with 10 consecutive choice tasks. Each task consisted of three alternativ

Long-term elevated precipitation promotes an acid metabolic preference in soil microbial communities in a Tibetan alpine grassland.

Alpine ecosystems store vast amounts of soil organic carbon but are highly sensitive to climate change. Despite this, the response of in situ soil microbial metabolic processes, especially carbon substrate utilization, to climatic shifts remains underexplored. Here, we assessed microbial activity by metatranscriptomics in a Tibetan alpine grassland after a decade of experimental warming (+2°C) and altered precipitation (+50% and -50% of ambient precipitation). The experiment revealed that altered precipitation, rather than warming, shaped the active microbial community. Altered precipitation a

Individual Versus Combined Effects of Warming, Elevated CO2 and Drought on Grassland Water Uptake and Fine Root Traits.

Increasing warming, atmospheric CO2 and drought are expected to change the water dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems. Yet, limited knowledge exists about how the interactive effects of these factors will affect grassland water uptake, and whether adaptations in fine root production and traits will alter water uptake capacity. In a managed C3 grassland, we tested the individual and combined effects of warming (+3°C), elevated CO2 (eCO2; +300 ppm) and drought on root water uptake (RWU) as well as on fine root production, trait adaptation, and fine root-to-shoot production ratios, and their relati

Nonlinear effects of soil pH on ecosystem multifunctionality along an alpine grassland transect on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Soil acidification driven by atmospheric deposition and anthropogenic reactive nitrogen inputs is a growing threat to biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF). Yet how biodiversity-EMF relationships vary across soil pH gradients remains insufficiently understood, limiting our ability to predict EMF responses to environmental change. Here, we combined field observations from 405 plots at 45 sites along a 430-km soil pH gradient in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to examine nonlinear variation in topsoil multifunctionality and its associations with above- and belowground biodiv
