Two different technical principles of gravitational valves (G-valves) have been presented: counterbalancer and switcher G-valves. The objective of our prospective study was to look for clinically relevant differences between both. A total of 54 patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) were treated; 30 patients received an Aesculap-Miethke GA-Valve (GAV; counterbalancer), and in 24 patients an Aesculap-Miethke Dualswitch-Valve (DSV; switcher) was implanted. The opening pressure of the posture-independent valve was 5 cm H2O in both devices. The outcome was clearly better with the usage

The effects of Picamilonum, 10 mg/kg, and Phenibutum, 50 mg/kg, on the cerebral blood flow, oxygen saturation and vascular reactivity in the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and hypothalamus were studied at rest during antiorthostatic hypokinesia and while rocking in antiorthostasis. Picamilonum was shown to have more steady vasodilatory effect, but it decreased a cerebrovascular response to CO2 and O2 inhalation. The reactivity of cerebral vessels to antiorthostasis under the influence of the drugs inversed, that of cerebrovascular vessels to CO2 inhalation decreased. Picamilonum enhanced vasoconst

Gravity has profoundly influenced life on Earth, yet how organisms adapt to changes in gravity remains largely unknown. This study examines vestibular plasticity, specifically how the vestibular system responds to altered gravity. We subjected male C57BL/6J mice to hypergravity (2 G) followed by normal gravity (1 G) to analyze changes in vestibular function and gene expression. Mice showed significant vestibular dysfunction, assessed by righting reflex tests, which persisted for days but reversed at 1 G after exposure to 2 G. Gene expression analysis in the vestibular ganglion identified signi

A distributed six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) cooperative control for multiple spacecraft formation is investigated considering parametric uncertainties, external disturbances, and time-varying communication delays. Unit dual quaternions are used to describe the kinematics and dynamics models of the 6-DOF relative motion of the spacecraft. A distributed coordinated controller based on dual quaternions with time-varying communication delays is proposed. The unknown mass and inertia, as well as unknown disturbances, are then taken into account. An adaptive coordinated control law is developed by c

The many problems faced by the theory of general relativity (GR) have always motivated us to explore the modified theory of GR. Considering the importance of studying the black hole (BH) entropy and its correction in gravity physics, we study the correction of thermodynamic entropy for a kind of spherically symmetric black hole under the generalized Brans-Dicke (GBD) theory of modified gravity. We derive and calculate the entropy and heat capacity. It is found that when the value of event horizon radius r+ is small, the effect of the entropy-correction term on the entropy is very obvious, whil

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Vulvar penetrating trauma is a rather uncommon occurrence (1). Firearm injuries caused by low-velocity gravitational bullets are a common cause of injuries in war-torn countries such as Somalia [2] (Campbell and Wilbert, 2022). These types of injuries are inflicted on by-standers by wayward bullets. No standard consensus on the appropriate management of vulvar penetrating trauma has been established (3). Here in, we report the successful management of an impacted bullet in the clitoris by a simple incision under local anesthesia. The principles of vulva and clitori

Accurate prediction of deformation and collapse of the upper airway during breathing is required for effective and personalised treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). While numerical modelling techniques such as fluid-structure interaction (FSI) are promising, an outstanding challenge is to accurately predict the deformation of the airway during breathing and thus the occurrence of OSA. These difficulties arise because the effective stiffness of the soft tissue in the human upper airway varies due to neuromuscular effects on the stiffness of the underlying muscles. In addition, both the

The aim of the present work was to undertake a complex of studies of structural transformations in the anterior thoracic ganglia of the sympathetic trunk and the thoracic part of the vagus nerve after acute and chronic gravitational overloading (GOL). Studies were performed on 28 white mongrel male rats aged 8-21 weeks. Animals of series I (acute GOL) were rotated in a centrifuge on one day (three rotation sessions with two 20-min breaks, giving a total rotation time of 31 min). Animals of series II (chronic GOL) were rotated in an alternating two-week regime for 13 weeks (total rotation time

Echocardiographic measurements of astronaut cardiac function have documented an initial increase, followed by a progressive reduction in both left ventricular end-diastolic volume index and stroke volume with entry into microgravity (micro-G). The investigators hypothesize that the observed reduction in cardiac filling may, in part, be due to the absence of a gravitational acceleration dependent, intraventricular hydrostatic pressure difference in micro-G that exists in the ventricle in normal gravity (1-G) due to its size and anatomic orientation. This acceleration-dependent pressure differen

We constructed an automated gravitational system to control fluid dynamics during hysteroscopic operations. The new system allows linear regulation of intrauterine pressure by varying the flow by simply changing the height of the fluid-filled bag above the patient. The outflow from the automated gravitational system is also driven by gravity. Between January 1994 and June 1995 we performed 88 hysteroscopic operations: 10 myomectomies, 8 endometrial ablations, 3 polypectomies, 3 lysis of synechiae, and 64 transcervical metroplasties. With the Vario Flow system we obtained good visualization, an

Background/Objectives: Differentiating focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) from hepatic adenoma (HA) remains challenging, as FNH is benign whereas HA carries risks of hemorrhage and malignant transformation. This prospective single-center pilot study evaluated the diagnostic performance of three-dimensional magnetic resonance elastography (3D-MRE) using a gravitational transducer for non-invasive differentiation of FNH and HA. Methods: Thirty-three participants (23 FNH, 10 HA) underwent 3D-MRE using the gravitational transducer. Viscoelastic parameters-stiffness, shear wave speed (Cs), wave attenu

Space-based gravitational wave detection imposes extremely high requirements on displacement measurement accuracy, with its core measurement components being laser interferometers and inertial sensors. The laser interferometers detect gravitational wave signals by measuring the distance between two test masses (TMs) housed within the inertial sensors. Spatial alignment errors of the TMs relative to the laser interferometers can severely degrade the interferometric performance, primarily by significantly amplifying tilt-to-length (TTL) coupling noise and reducing interferometric efficiency. The progression of breast cancer is influenced by the stiffness of the extracellular matrix (ECM), which becomes stiffer as cancer advances due to increased collagen IV and laminin secretion by cancer-associated fibroblasts. Intriguingly, breast cancer cells cultivated in two-dimensions exhibit a less aggressive behavior when exposed to weightlessness, or microgravity conditions. This study aims to elucidate the interplay between matrix stiffness and microgravity on breast cancer progression. For this purpose, three-dimensional spheroids of breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) were

Since Einstein's prediction regarding the existence of gravitational waves was directly verified by the ground-based detector Advanced LIGO, research on gravitational wave detection has garnered increasing attention. To overcome limitations imposed by ground vibrations and interference at arm's length, a space-based gravitational wave detection initiative was proposed, which focuses on analyzing a large number of waves within the frequency range below 1 Hz. Due to the weak signal intensity, the TMs must move along their geodesic orbit with a residual acceleration less than 10-15 m/s2/Hz1/2. Co

Background The cardiovascular system is strongly dependent on the gravitational environment. Gravitational changes cause mechanical fluid shifts and, in turn, autonomic effectors influence systemic circulation and cardiac control. We implemented a tilt paradigm to (1) investigate the acute hemodynamic response across a range of directions of the gravitational vector, and (2) to generate specific dose-response relationships of this gravitational dependency. Methods and Results Twelve male subjects were tilted from 45° head-up tilt to 45° head-down tilt in 15° increments, in both supine and pron

PURPOSE: A gravitational valve (GV) may be used to treat hydrocephalus, offering possible advantages that include avoidance of over drainage and long-term complications. Because a GV is made from metal, there are potential safety and other problems related to the use of MRI. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate MRI-related issues (i.e., magnetic field interactions, heating, and artifacts) for a newly developed, metallic GV.
METHODS: Tests were performed on the GV (GAV 2.0) using well-accepted techniques to assess magnetic field interactions (translational attraction and torque,
