Gravity-dependent nystagmus and inner-ear dysfunction suggest anterior and posterior inferior cerebellar artery infarct.

Cerebellar lesions may present with gravity-dependent nystagmus, where the direction and velocity of the drifts change with alterations in head position. Two patients had acute onset of hearing loss, vertigo, oscillopsia, nausea, and vomiting. Examination revealed gravity-dependent nystagmus, unilateral hypoactive vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), and hearing loss ipsilateral to the VOR hypofunction. Traditionally, the hypoactive VOR and hearing loss suggest inner-ear dysfunction. Vertigo, nausea, vomiting, and nystagmus may suggest peripheral or central vestibulopathy. The gravity-dependent modu

Comparative evaluation of radiation shielding zero gravity vs lead apron in coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Ensuring safety from radiation in catheterization labs is critical due to the cumulative nature of radiation exposure. This study compares the effectiveness of Zero Gravity (ZG) and conventional Lead Apron shields in coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention. METHODS: Over six months, radiation exposure was assessed for two operators performing angiography procedures. One operator used a Lead Apron, while the other used the Zero Gravity system. Radiation was measured using Thermoluminescent Dosimeters (TLDs). Procedural characteristics, fluoroscopy time, and co

Surgical problems in space: an overview.

Terrestrial experience indicates that surgical emergencies may cause significant morbidity in space, and may present unique problems. Microgravity physiologic changes that may increase susceptibility to, and complications from, injury include fluid redistribution and diuresis, bone demineralization, and immune system alterations. Conventional diagnostic tests may be unavailable or unreliable--e.g. the radiologic finding of "air under the diaphragm", which conventionally indicates perforation of an air-containing hollow viscus, such as the stomach, with a gravity-dependent rising of gas in the

Head and eye movements in congenital nystagmus.

Patients with congenital nystagmus exhibit a wide range of unusual nystagmus waveforms and strategies to obtain maximum visual acuity. We investigated target acquisition strategies, head-eye coordination, and the effects of alteration of head position relative to gravity on congenital nystagmus waveforms in five patients. No changes in the nystagmus were found when patients' heads were placed in different positions relative to gravity. Two patients had distinctive abnormalities of head-eye coordination characterized both by failure of eye movement to precede head movement and by position of th

Effects of lunar gravity on the muscles, bones, and joint capsules of the upper limbs of mice.

BACKGROUND: Gravity (1 g) is crucial for musculoskeletal system development and maintenance. Reduced mechanical loading during spaceflight decreases muscle mass and bone mineral density in the lower limbs. However, its effects on the upper limbs remain poorly studied. In this study, we sought to elucidate the impact of lunar gravity on the muscles, bones, and joints of mouse upper limbs. METHODS: Using the Mouse Habitat Unit aboard the International Space Station, male C57BL/6J mice (9-weeks-old) were assigned to either a Ground Control (GC) or a Partial-Gravity (PG) group. PG group mice were

Otoconin-90 deletion leads to imbalance but normal hearing: a comparison with other otoconia mutants.

Our sense of gravitation and linear acceleration is mediated by stimulation of vestibular hair cells through displacement of otoconia in the utricle and saccule (the gravity receptor organ). We recently showed that otoconin-90 (Oc90) deletion led to formation of giant otoconia. In the present study, we determined the extent to which the giant otoconia affected balance and gravity receptor sensory input and compared the findings with other otoconia mutants. We employed a wide spectrum of balance behavioral tests, including reaching and air-righting reflexes, gait, swimming, beam-crossing, rotor

Acute blockade of inner ear marginal and dark cell K+ secretion: Effects on gravity receptor function.

Specific pharmacological blockade of KCNQ (Kv7) channels with XE991 rapidly (within 20 min) and profoundly alters inner ear gravity receptor responses to head motion (Lee et al., 2017). We hypothesized that these effects were attributable to the suppression of K+ secretion following blockade of KCNQ1-KCNE1 channels in vestibular dark cells and marginal cells. To test this hypothesis, K+ secretion was independently inhibited by blocking the Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter (NKCC1, Slc12a2) rather than KCNQ1-KCNE1 channels. Acute blockade of NKCC1 with ethacrynic acid (40 mg/kg) eliminated auditory res

Modulation of vestibular function and receptor expression by experimental hypergravity in a rat model.

Motion sickness develops because of a mismatch or conflict between the information gathered from the visual input, somatosensory input, and the vestibular system. Altered gravity can cause motion sickness while traveling in space. In this study, we aimed to establish a rat model of hypergravity-stimulated motion sickness using hypergravity equipment and investigate changes in serotonin and histamine receptors. Overall, 21 rats were allocated to three experimental groups (4G-24 h, 4G-2 weeks, and 4G-4weeks) and one control group, with seven rats in each group. We performed western blotting and

Impact of a simulated gravity load for atmospheric reentry, 10 g for 2 min, on conscious mice.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency recently performed a mouse experiment in the International Space Station in which mice were raised for 35 days, retrieved using the Dragon spacecraft, and then harvested for analysis 2 days after splashdown. However, the impact of the retrieval procedure, which exposed mice to 5-10 g for 2 min during atmospheric reentry and splashdown, was unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a 10 g load for 2 min (using a gondola-type centrifuge with a 1.5-m arm installed at Gifu University) on conscious mice. Physiological changes during spaceflight.

Before human beings first explored space, many dire predictions from the scientific community suggested that weightlessness was not compatible with life. Although these prophesies have been proven false, many physiological alterations do occur in microgravity conditions. Other systems are altered as well, but the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and immune systems undergo adaptations that may pose problems for the space traveler, especially on returning to gravity.

Chronic exposure to hypergravity affects thyrotropin-releasing hormone levels in rat brainstem and cerebellum.

In studies to determine the neurochemical mechanisms underlying adaptation to altered gravity we have investigated changes in neuropeptide levels in brainstem, cerebellum, hypothalamus, striatum, hippocampus, and cerebral cortex by radioimmunoassay. Fourteen days of hypergravity (hyperG) exposure resulted in significant increases in thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) content of brainstem and cerebellum, but no changes in levels of other neuropeptides (beta-endorphin, cholecystokinin, met-enkephalin, somatostatin, and substance P) examined in these areas were found, nor were TRH levels signifi

Evidence for vestibular regulation of autonomic functions in a mouse genetic model.

Physiological responses to changes in the gravitational field and body position, as well as symptoms of patients with anxiety-related disorders, have indicated an interrelationship between vestibular function and stress responses. However, the relative significance of cochlear and vestibular information in autonomic regulation remains unresolved because of the difficulties in distinguishing the relative contributions of other proprioceptive and interoceptive inputs, including vagal and somatic information. To investigate the role of cochlear and vestibular function in central and physiological

Velocity Storage Integrator (VSI): Mechanisms, circuits, and clinical implications A narrative review.

The velocity storage integrator (VSI) is a central, gravity-referenced neural network that prolongs and spatially orients vestibular/optokinetic signals beyond semicircular-canal dynamics. Classical systems analyses framed it as a leaky integrator in an indirect pathway, complementing a high-frequency direct pathway that rapidly stabilizes gaze. Converging unit recordings, lesions, and modeling now localize the spatiotemporal core of VSI to commissural vestibular-nuclei networks-particularly vestibular-only (VO) and vestibular-pause-saccade (VPS) populations-under cerebellar nodulus-uvula (NU)

Hypergravity reduces F-actin accumulation in osteoclasts, with attenuated bone resorption.

Bone loss occurs in astronauts during prolonged spaceflight, thus indicating the sensitivity of skeletal homeostasis to altered gravitational environments. Previous studies have shown that microgravity affects osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption, which suggests that osteoclasts possess mechanisms to sense and respond to gravity-generated mechanical forces. For testing of the related mechanisms, hypergravity can be experimentally reproduced with use of a centrifuge. In the present study, osteoclasts derived from mouse bone marrow were subjected to hypergravity under three conditions:

[Diagnostic possibilities of echography of the pancreas in children with chronic diseases of the gastroduodenal and biliary systems].

Echography of the pancreas in children suffering from chronic pathology of the gastroduodenal and biliary systems may reveal a considerable incidence and the gravity of pancreatic injuries. The relationship may be found between alterations in the pancreas and the gravity of the pathology in question as well as duration, process spreading, gastric secretion reduction, and the disease entity. The results derived well agree with the reported data on pathomorphology and laboratory diagnosis of pancreatic injuries in the above-indicated pathology and provide evidence in favour of the high informati

Acute and short-term fluctuations in gravity are associated with changes in circulatory plasma protein levels.

Gravitational changes between micro- and hypergravity cause several adaptations and alterations in the human body. Besides muscular atrophy and immune system impairment, effects on the circulatory system have been described, which can be associated with a wide range of blood biomarker changes. This study examined nine individuals (seven males, two females) during a parabolic flight campaign (PFC). Thirty-one parabolas were performed in one flight day, resulting in ~22 s of microgravity during each parabola. Each participant was subjected to a single flight day with a total of 31 parabolas, tot

Reasoning decline during aging under familiar and unfamiliar physics.

Physical reasoning is the capacity to anticipate how an environment will change as its elements move and interact. This cognitive skill, which is based on humans' intuitive knowledge of physics, underlies everyday tasks that are potentially critical to older adults, such as avoiding collisions. Nevertheless, the effects of aging on physical reasoning remain understudied. Here, we tested physical reasoning among younger (18-35 years) and older (over 65 years) adults as they completed different difficulty levels of a physical reasoning paradigm. Participants viewed object displacements in a virt

[Clinical symptoms, origin, and therapy of the "pusher syndrome"].

Stroke patients may exhibit the peculiar behavior of actively pushing away from the nonhemiparetic side, leading to lateral postural imbalance and a tendency to fall towards the paralyzed side. These patients use the nonparetic extremities to stem actively against attempts of passive correction towards upright orientation. This phenomenon has been called the "pusher syndrome". Recent findings disclose that the deficit leading to contraversive pushing is an altered perception of the body's orientation in relation to gravity. Pusher patients experience their body as upright when they are actuall
