Systematic underestimation of human hand weight.

According to Newton's laws, the weight of a body part is equal to its mass times gravitational acceleration. Our experience of body part weight, however, is constructed by the central nervous system. No sensory receptors directly specify the weight of body parts, and the factors influencing perceived weight remain unknown. The perceived weight of held objects has been linked to sensations of the magnitude of central motor commands sent to the muscles, what Helmholtz called the effort of will and has subsequently been called the sense of effort1. The link between the sense of effort and the per

The Vestibular System Influences the Perceived Duration of Lights But Not of Sounds or Touches.

Accurately perceiving the duration of stimuli is important for many human behaviours, especially those involving movement such as when catching a ball. However, perceived duration is reportedly different depending on which sense is being monitored, with auditory stimuli often judged as longer than a matched visual stimulus. Recent experiments have implicated gravity in duration perception, but rigorous psychophysical methods have been lacking. Here, we developed a novel psychometric method for measuring perceived duration and manipulated the reliability of gravity by altering posture and by di

Hypergravity reduces F-actin accumulation in osteoclasts, with attenuated bone resorption.

Bone loss occurs in astronauts during prolonged spaceflight, thus indicating the sensitivity of skeletal homeostasis to altered gravitational environments. Previous studies have shown that microgravity affects osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption, which suggests that osteoclasts possess mechanisms to sense and respond to gravity-generated mechanical forces. For testing of the related mechanisms, hypergravity can be experimentally reproduced with use of a centrifuge. In the present study, osteoclasts derived from mouse bone marrow were subjected to hypergravity under three conditions:

Prediction of space motion sickness susceptibility by disconjugate eye torsion in parabolic flight.

The hypothesis of asymmetric otolith function asserts that physiological or anatomical differences in the two sides of the bilateral gravity-sensing otolith apparatus of the inner ear may be well compensated on Earth, but when exposed to novel gravitational states, the prior compensatory stratagems may be ineffective, leading to unstable vestibular responses and causing the phenomenon of space motion sickness. To investigate this hypothesis, spontaneous eye torsion, a reflex governed by the otolith organs, was examined in the upright position during the hypo- and hypergravity of parabolic flig

Single-cell RNA-sequencing of human eosinophils in allergic inflammation in the esophagus.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophils are elusive cells involved in allergic inflammation. Single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) is an emerging approach to deeply characterize cellular properties, heterogeneity, and functionality. OBJECTIVES: We sought to comprehensively characterize the transcriptome and biological functions of human eosinophils at a site of severe allergic inflammation in the esophagus (ie, eosinophilic esophagitis [EoE]). METHODS: We employed a gravity-based scRNA-seq methodology to sequence blood eosinophils from patients with EoE and control individuals compared to a reanalyzed publ

Constant severe imbalance following traumatic otoconial loss: a new explanation of residual dizziness.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common type of vertigo, caused by otoconia falling from the utricle into a semicircular canal (SCC). After successful repositioning maneuvers residual dizziness (RD) has been described and several reasons are used to explain RD. It can last for only a few days or weeks, but also much longer. We present a patient with a severe traumatic loss of otoconia from both maculae utriculi and a persistent imbalance more than 9 years. We think that the loss of otoconia from the utricular and probably also saccular macula induced a sudden reduction o

Cross-kingdom communication between plants and parasitic nematodes.

Plant-parasitic nematodes and their hosts engage in a continuous exchange of signals cross-kingdom. On the one hand, parasites exploit host-derived metabolites, proteins, and RNAs to sense host identity, proximity, and condition - and as a basis for manipulating host processes to their benefit. On the other hand, hosts respond to nematode-derived pheromones, proteins, and metabolites to either subvert or accommodate parasitism. Our recent understanding is that microbes play a role mediating, at least in part, a communication, which ultimately shapes the developmental trajectories of both host

A Paramedian Supracerebellar, Infratentorial Approach for Resection of Midbrain Tumor.

Brainstem tumors represent formidable lesions for neurosurgical intervention. They should be approached with a thorough understanding of the anatomy and clear sense of surgical goals. A 14-year-old previously healthy girl presented with 2 weeks of nausea, headaches, diplopia, and gait instability. Workup revealed a 3.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 cm contrast-enhancing mass within the right midbrain. The patient consented to the surgical procedure. Preoperative imaging demonstrated superior displacement of the deep venous system because of the tumor, as well as inferior displacement of the fourth cranial nerve

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the supramarginal gyrus: a window to perception of upright.

Although the pull of gravity, primarily detected by the labyrinth, is the fundamental input for our sense of upright, vision and proprioception must also be integrated with vestibular information into a coherent perception of spatial orientation. Here, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to probe the role of the cortex at the temporal parietal junction (TPJ) of the right cerebral hemisphere in the perception of upright. We measured the perceived vertical orientation of a visual line; that is, the subjective visual vertical (SVV), after a short period of continuous theta burst stimu

Neurofluids-Deep inspiration, cilia and preloading of the astrocytic network.

With the advent of real-time MRI, the motion and passage of cerebrospinal fluid can be visualized without gating and exclusion of low-frequency waves. This imaging modality gives insights into low-volume, rapidly oscillating cardiac-driven movement as well as sustained, high-volume, slowly oscillating inspiration-driven movement. Inspiration means a spontaneous or artificial increase in the intrathoracic dimensions independent of body position. Alterations in thoracic diameter enable the thoracic and spinal epidural venous compartments to be emptied and filled, producing an upward surge of cer

A model of the basal ganglia in voluntary movement and postural reactions.

A basal ganglia central pattern generator (CPG) is developed and its role in voluntary movements on the ground and postural reactions on a disturbed platform are studied and analysed by simulation. Biped dynamics and platform kinematics are utilised. The effects of agonist-antagonist muscular co-activation and joint stiffness are formulated. The implementation of the necessary counter-manoeuvres for maintaining balance and postural stability is studied. A control strategy, applicable to large systems, is formulated. The biped manoeuvres and transitions terminate in pre-specified intervals of t

Inertial mass measurements at the microscale in liquid.

Mass is a fundamental property of matter that gives rise to both inertia and gravity, and its accurate quantification is central to the development of science and technology. Different technologies and methods have been developed that enable us to determine the mass of systems across length scales, from the subatomic world all the way to the cosmic scale, with such measurements generally performed in vacuum or air conditions. However, directly measuring the actual mass of objects or systems while they are submerged in liquid environments such as water remains challenging and highly debated, li

Indications for acceleration-dependent changes of membrane potential in the flagellate Euglena gracilis.

The effects of the calcium sequester EGTA on gravitactic orientation and membrane potential changes in the unicellular flagellate Euglena gracilis were investigated during a recent parabolic-flight experiment aboard of an Airbus A300. In the course of a flight parabola, an acceleration profile is achieved which yields subsequently about 20 s of hypergravity (1.8 g(n)), about 20 s of microgravity, and another 20 s of hypergravity phases. The movement behavior of the cells was investigated with real-time, computer-based image analysis. Membrane potential changes were detected with a newly develo

Sensor-Modality-Aware Human Activity Recognition with the Convolutional Tsetlin Machine: Interpretable and Resource-Efficient Neuro-Symbolic Learning.

Human activity recognition (HAR) based on smartphone and wearable sensor data is commonly addressed using statistical learning methods and deep neural networks that often provide strong predictive performance, but at the expense of limited interpretability and substantial computational and energy requirements. Such limitations reduce their suitability for deployment in practical sensing environments where model decisions must be transparent, verifiable and executable on resource-constrained devices. In this work, we investigate the Convolutional Tsetlin Machine (CTM) for multimodal HAR using o

Bayesian quantification of sensory reweighting in a familial bilateral vestibular disorder (DFNA9).

DFNA9 is a rare progressive autosomal dominantly inherited vestibulo-cochlear disorder, resulting in a homogeneous group of patients with hearing impairment and bilateral vestibular function loss. These patients suffer from a deteriorated sense of spatial orientation, leading to balance problems in darkness, especially on irregular surfaces. Both behavioral and functional imaging studies suggest that the remaining sensory cues could compensate for the loss of vestibular information. A thorough model-based quantification of this reweighting in individual patients is, however, missing. Here we p

Ultraviolet avoidance by embryonic buoyancy control in three species of marine fish.

Pelagic fish embryos are thought to float in or near surface waters for the majority of their development and are presumed to have little to no control over their mobility, rendering these embryos at high risk for damages associated with surface stressors such as ultraviolet radiation (UVR). We recently challenged these long-standing paradigms by characterizing a potential mechanism of stressor avoidance in early-life stage mahi-mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) in which embryos sense external cues, such as UVR, and modify their buoyancy to reduce further exposure. It is unknown whether embryos of ot

A never-ending prediction: meta-prediction, counter-oscillatory system and traumatic affordance.

This article comes back on the hypothesis developed by the evolutionary theory of the sensorimotor paradox that our capacity to produce mental representation could be derived from a dissociation of sensory prediction systems from motor action. As they should be then coordinated together, we are drawing further possible leads regarding the intermediary space between linear mental projections that are not bound and stopped by sensory feedback, and ongoing sensory perception whether large or discrete. Dissociated prediction would be eventually interrupted by sensory input, getting lost, reinitiat
