Tinnitus, i.e., the subjective perception of sound without an external source, is a common symptom of various medical conditions. In multiple ancient medical texts, descriptions of tinnitus-like symptoms can be found, but a comprehensive overview is lacking. Here, we collect and describe sources from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, Greece, the Roman Empire, and China. Based on these text segments, we demonstrate how tinnitus has been known since antiquity. In the second part of the article, we give an overview of contemporary tinnitus care and treatment, demonstrating how a multidisciplinar

The history of women as medical and surgical practitioners stretches back to at least 3500 B. C. Wall painting in tombs and temples of ancient Egypt show them performing surgical procedures and there is also evidence that women surgeons were practicing in ancient Sumeria, Babylon, Greece and Rome. During the middle ages as per formal decree issued by the church in the twelfth century monks were prohibited from "blood-letting" or performing operations. This effectively relegated wound treatment, bleeding and bone-setting to barbers and women. Women were particularly valued for their skill in ob

PURPOSE: Hippocrates was a famous physician of Kos in ancient Greece (c. 460 B.C.). His works were later described in the Hippocratic Collection, in which I studied disorders of urination.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: I collected mentions of disorders of urination in the Hippocratic Collection (Roeb, Otsuki and Kon editions) to compared description of disorders of urination between the Kos and Knidos Schools.
RESULTS: Disorders of urination were mentioned in 67 parts (sentences or sections): difficult urination in 50, retention of urine in 15 and urinary incontinence in two or three (presumably co

The scrotum in humans is asymmetric, the right testicle being visibly higher than the left in most men. Paradoxically, it is also the case that the right testicle is somewhat larger, rather than smaller, as might be expected. Greek classical and pre-classical art, which took great care in its attention to anatomical detail, correctly portrayed the right testicle as the higher, but then incorrectly portrayed the left testicle as visibly larger. The implication is that the Greeks used a simple mechanical theory, the left testicle being thought to be lower because it was larger and hence more sub

An archaic Greek terracotta vase in the Art and History Museum at Geneva depicts a man deprived of his left arm and with two legs ending in a stump below the knees. Did he suffer from a traumatism (amputation), a mutilating disease or congenital malformation (hemimelia)? A survey of written and iconographic sources throws light on the methods and limits of ancient surgery, and on the chances of survival of abnormal children in archaic and classical Greece.

Dreams preoccupied the Greek and Roman world in antiquity, therefore they had a prominent role in social, philosophical, religious, historical and political life of those times. They were considered as omens and prophetic signs of future events in private and public life, and that was particularly accentuated when elements of actions which took place in the plot of dreams were associated directly or indirectly with real events. This is why it was important to use them in divination, and helped the growth of superstition and folklore believes. Medicine as a science and an anthropocentric art, c

This article addresses whether Ebola may have been present in an urban setting in Athens in 430 bce and explores the historical importance of the ancient outbreak. New knowledge from today's West African epidemic allows a more accurate assessment of whether Ebola may have caused the Athenian outbreak than was once possible. The Athenian disease, whose etiology remains unknown, developed abruptly with fevers, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and hemorrhage. It originated in sub-Saharan Africa and was especially contagious to doctors and caregivers. No remedies were effective. Bu

Recent data implicate Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi as a causative pathogen of the Plague of Athens during the Peloponnesian War (430-426 bc). According to Thucydides, the sudden outbreak of the disease may link to poisoning of the water reservoirs by the Spartans. The siege of a city was aimed at exhausting the supplies of a population, which often led to the outbreak and spread of epidemics. Poisoning of the water reservoirs of a besieged city as an act of bioterrorism would probably shorten the necessary time for such conditions to appear.

PURPOSE: While a modest amount of medical literature has been written on the topic of priapism, reports heretofore have focused predominantly on diagnostic and management related aspects of the disorder, providing meager information in regard to its pathophysiology. Accordingly the intent of this review was to explore the etiological and pathogenic factors involved in priapism.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The review entailed an overview of traditional and modern concepts that have been applied to the pathophysiology of priapism and an evaluation of assorted observational and experimental data rela

Alexander the Great died in Babylon in 323 BC. His death at age 32 followed a 2-week febrile illness. Speculated causes of death have included poisoning; assassination, and a number of infectious diseases. One incident, mentioned by Plutarch but not considered by previous investigators, may shed light on the cause of Alexander's death. The incident, which occurred as he entered Babylon, involved a flock of ravens exhibiting unusual behavior and subsequently dying at his feet. The inexplicable behavior of ravens is reminiscent of avian illness and death weeks before the first human cases of Wes

Objective King Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great, suffered a penetrating wound to the leg from a spear that left him severely handicapped. His skeletal remains represent the first and only case of an injury from ancient Greece that can be directly compared to its historical record. The objective of the study was to confirm the identity of the male occupant of Royal Tomb I in Vergina, Greece as Philip II of Macedonia by providing new evidence based on anatomical dissection and correlation with the historical description of the wounds. Methods Radiographs and photographs of the leg in

The medical papyri in ancient Egypt written before 1500 B. C, recorded the metu system which could not be explained by modern anatomic location and was difficultly expounded by biological functions. Most of diseases were treated by dredging the metu, regulating the metu, balancing the metu, removing noxious substances from the metu, restoring the normal functions of the metu. The ancient Egyptian held that the metu forms mutual connecting channel network to carry out flowing of energy and information, with the functions of linking up external and internal organs, which is similar to linking fu

The Greco-Roman physician Galen of Pergamon was the first to mention a drug named Paccianon. This drug was unknown in ancient Greece and most probably through the School of Alexandria entered medical literature. Oribasius and Aetius were the only two practitioners who mentioned it after Galen, administrating it in various forms, such as poultice, mixture, and collyrium, for a series of ophthalmic diseases and cutaneous lesions. Modern medicine uses some of the material used in Paccianon's formula, proving its anticancer, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Paccianon constitutes on

Drugs with psychedelic, hypnotic, narcotic, analgesic, suppressive, euphoric and stimulating effects were used in various ways during the ancient times. We can classify drug use in ancient times into two main categories. On the one hand, ancient physicians prescribed drugs based on their pharmaceutical-therapeutic actions. On the other hand, people not pertaining to medicine and not relating to its accurate implementation often abused drugs to achieve an euphoric state of mind, either for personal gratification or as an indispensable element of religion and mythology. Ancient Greek medical lit

The problem of broad bean's syndrome and lathyrism in ancient Greece has been deeply studied, with particular referrement to the hypothetic medica and mystical reasons of the Pythagoric order not to eat broad beans. It is impossible to prove Egyptian influence of Phythagora's precept, but we can, however, consider the hypothesis that they had noticed the potential deadly effect of broad beans' use, too, and wonder if their interduction had the same motivations.
