Interpersonal psychotherapy of depressed HIV-positive outpatients.

In an open pilot study, 23 depressed adults infected with human immunodeficiency virus were treated using interpersonal therapy. Twenty subjects recovered from depression after a mean of 16 sessions. The authors discuss six aspects of interpersonal therapy that make it useful with depressed HIV-infected persons: psychoeducation about the sick role; a here-and-now framework; formulation of problems from an interpersonal perspective; exploration of options for changing dysfunctional behavior patterns; identification of focused interpersonal problem areas (grief, role transition, interpersonal di

My Heart Will Go On: Caregiver Experiences of a Legacy Intervention in Acute Palliative Care.

BACKGROUND: The Heartbeat Project (HBP) is a music therapist-led legacy intervention that incorporates patients' heartbeat recordings into personalized audio keepsakes. While anecdotally described as meaningful, few studies have explored caregiver outcomes after participation. OBJECTIVE: To describe implementation characteristics and caregiver-reported outcomes of the HBP to understand caregiver perceptions and inform best practices in palliative care. DESIGN: This mixed-methods study documented song genre preferences at implementation. A 16-item survey assessed caregiver engagement, satisfa

Adult separation anxiety disorder in complicated grief: an exploratory study on frequency and correlates.

INTRODUCTION: Complicated grief (CG) has been the subject of increasing attention in the past decades but its relationship with separation anxiety disorder (SEPAD) is still controversial. The aim of the current study was to explore the prevalence and clinical significance of adult SEPAD in a sample of help-seeking individuals with CG. METHODS: 151 adults with CG, enrolled in a randomized controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of (CG) treatment to that of interpersonal therapy, were assessed by means of the Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG), the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-I

Relationships among psychological mindedness, alexithymia and outcome in four forms of short-term psychotherapy.

This study explored the relative strength of two patient characteristics, psychological mindedness (PM) and alexithymia, as predictors of psychotherapy outcome. Data were provided by two comparative trials of interpretive versus supportive therapy. One involved short-term group therapy for 107 outpatients with complicated grief. The other involved short-term individual therapy for 144 outpatients of mixed diagnoses. Prior to beginning therapy, patients were assessed for PM using the Psychological Mindedness Assessment Procedure and for alexithymia using the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale. F

My battle with spasmodic torticollis: a healing experience.

The life-transforming experience of overcoming spasmodic torticollis compelled the author to write the following personal account. The author, who triumphed over this debilitating disease, is now an advocate of holistic nursing practices that motivate patients through a genuine concern for patient well-being, community, and humanity. The author describes her personal experience of grief and the grieving process; the healing effects of crying; and her selection of the complementary and alternative therapies of prayer, music, and massage that became instrumental in finding a pathway to recovery.

Depression and its Treatment in Late Life.

Depression in late life is associated with poorer quality of life and higher mortality. Pain, chronic illness, loneliness, loss of physical abilities, grief, cognitive impairment, and socioeconomic disadvantage all increase the risk of depression in this age group. Treatment for depression in late life includes antidepressant medications, cognitive behavior therapy, interpersonal therapy, and electroconvulsive therapy. The use of virtual reality is also proposed as a potential new treatment for depression that could be made available in aged care settings, and early evidence holds promise. Dif

Advances in the treatment of bone metastases.

The skeleton is the third most common site for cancer to spread to after the liver and lungs. Malignancies that can cause destruction of skeletal bones include multiple myeloma and metastatic disease of the breast, prostate, and lung. Bone metastases are problematic for patients with cancer because accelerated bone breakdown occurs with many associated complications. One or more of the following problems may occur: pain, hypercalcemia, pathologic fractures, myelosuppression, and spinal cord compression with subsequent progressive immobility. Quality of life is affected negatively, and associat

Psychosocial stressors and SLE flares: A grounded theory based on Iranian women's lived experiences.

ObjectiveSystemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) flares are psychosocially influenced, but there are few culturally sensitive models. This study aims to explore psychosocial factors contributing to lupus flares in women and co-construct a novel framework, grounded in their lived experiences, to guide clinical practice.MethodsUtilizing Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory, we conducted a comprehensive study that included semi-structured interviews with 20 Iranian women who have SLE. Iterative open, focused, and theoretical coding was used to analyze data, with reflexive practices applied to addr

Reframing Bereavement as a Public Health Exposure: Field Notes From a Community-Based Mental Health Program in Postconflict Liberia.

Bereavement is often viewed as an individual life event; however, in postconflict Liberia, years of war and disease have transformed grief into a population-level exposure. Drawing on experience implementing group interpersonal therapy in Liberia, we describe how group-based, community-centered care facilitates recovery. Program outcomes from 2022 to 2025 demonstrate significant reductions in depression alongside improvements in social connection. These field notes underscore the need to address bereavement as a public health issue through community-based group interventions rather than locali

Restoring body image after cancer (ReBIC): A group therapy intervention.

OBJECTIVES: Body image (BI) remains a significant survivorship challenge among breast cancer (BC) survivors. We describe an 8-week group intervention-restoring body image after cancer (ReBIC)-developed to target BI distress for BC survivors. METHODS: The intervention was informed by interviews with BC survivors and by a descriptive, exploratory approach which adapted guided imagery exercises to address BI. Educational material was selected to address sociocultural factors that may contribute to BI distress and affect adjustment. Videotape reviews and content analyses further refined the inter

Healing grief - an online self-help intervention programme for bereaved Chinese with prolonged grief: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

Background: In China, mental health services do not currently meet the needs of bereaved people with symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Internet-based grief interventions may help fill this gap, but such programmes have not yet been developed or evaluated in China. The proposed study aims to investigate the effectiveness, acceptability, and feasibility of an online self-help intervention programme named Healing Grief for bereaved Chinese with prolonged grief, and to explore the psychological mechanisms of potential improvements. Methods: We designed a two-arm randomised controlled tria

Experiential techniques and therapeutic relationship in the treatment of narcissistic personality disorder: The case of Laura.

Experiential techniques can be used to address maladaptive interpersonal patterns in patients with personality disorders (PDs) as long as they are delivered minding about the therapeutic relationship. We present the case study of Laura, a 38-year-old woman presenting with covert narcissism, generalized anxiety disorder, depression, and complicated grief treated with metacognitive interpersonal therapy. Laura initially refused to engage in any experiential work out of fear of being judged and abandoned by her therapist. To navigate this therapeutic obstacle, the therapist focused on exploring a

[Psychotherapy in primary care: presentation of a case of somatomorphic disorder treated with interpersonal therapy].

Problems of medically unexplained somatic symptoms are common in Primary care. They often involve a psychiatric comorbidity that requires some form of psychotherapy that addresses, among other problems, the frequent use of the service. The purpose of this paper is to present the rationale and the generalities of a brief psychotherapeutic intervention, interpersonal therapy (IPT), in its adaptation to primary care. Its applicability is shown through a case of undifferentiated somatoform disorder, a condition so prevalent and difficult to approach in the field of primary care. IPT assumes that s
