Ranking microbial risk of self-supplied groundwater in urban Indonesia.

In Indonesia, 61% of urban households use self-supplied groundwater, with 24% relying on it as a primary drinking water source. Many self-supplied sources contain faecal contamination, posing health risks. Identifying locations with elevated contamination risk can help target piped-water investments and interim safety measures, but collecting sufficient water quality data is costly. This study develops and validates a method to rank contamination risk across Indonesian cities using secondary data alone. Contamination probability was modelled using logistic regression applied to water quality d

Prioritising sewersheds based on groundwater infiltration probability: A geospatial approach.

Evaluating groundwater infiltration (GWI) in sewer networks is essential for managing network capacities, especially amid growing pressures on network maintenance and operation caused by increasing domestic and storm water inputs. Despite this significance, GWI assessments have received limited attention, especially at large scales. In fact, no previous study has comprehensively evaluated sewersheds based on GWI scores. This study addresses this gap by focusing on prioritising sewersheds based on a GWI metric across South West England. Geospatial technology, incorporating a fuzzy-analytic hier

Impacts of phreatic aquifer leakage on confined groundwater quality degradation.

Sustainable management of multi-layer aquifer systems in arid regions is challenged by vertical leakage induced by intensive groundwater extraction. In the Yinchuan Plain, northwest China, prolonged pumping has formed large depression cones (>500 km2) in the confined aquifer, enhancing leakage from the phreatic aquifer. This study integrates hydrochemical and isotopic analyses to elucidate the mechanisms and spatial heterogeneity through which such leakage impacts confined water quality. Results showed that the mean Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in confined water increased from 1008 mg/L in 200

CaO2-based electro-Fenton-oxidation of 1,2-dichloroethane in groundwater.

It has been well recognized that the Fenton reaction requires a rigorous pH control and suffers from the fast self-degradation of H2O2. In an effort to resolve the technical demerits of the conventional Fenton reaction, particular concern on the use of CaO2-based Fenton reaction was paid in this study. To realize the practical use of CaO2 in the Fenton reaction for groundwater remediation, it could be of great importance to control its reaction rate in the subsurface. As such, this study laid great emphasis on the combined process of electrochemical oxidation and CaO2-based Fenton oxidation, u

Acetylene-Fueled Trichloroethene Reductive Dechlorination in a Groundwater Enrichment Culture.

In aquifers, acetylene (C2H2) is a product of abiotic degradation of trichloroethene (TCE) catalyzed by in situ minerals. C2H2 can, in turn, inhibit multiple microbial processes including TCE dechlorination and metabolisms that commonly support dechlorination, in addition to supporting the growth of acetylenotrophic microorganisms. Previously, C2H2 was shown to support TCE reductive dechlorination in synthetic, laboratory-constructed cocultures containing the acetylenotroph Pelobacter sp. strain SFB93 and Dehalococcoides mccartyi strain 195 or strain BAV1. In this study, we demonstrate TCE and

Compound-Specific Stable Carbon Isotope Analysis of Chlorofluorocarbons in Groundwater.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), controlled substances due to their role in stratospheric ozone loss, also occur as dissolved contaminants in groundwaters. Stable carbon isotopic signatures may provide valuable new information on the fate of these compounds as has been seen for other priority hydrocarbon contaminants, but to date no method for extraction and isotopic analysis of dissolved CFCs from groundwaters has been developed. Here we describe a cryogenic purge and trap system coupled to continuous flow compound-specific stable carbon isotope analysis mass s

[Groundwater organic pollution source identification technology system research and application].

Groundwater organic pollutions are found in large amount of locations, and the pollutions are widely spread once onset; which is hard to identify and control. The key process to control and govern groundwater pollution is how to control the sources of pollution and reduce the danger to groundwater. This paper introduced typical contaminated sites as an example; then carried out the source identification studies and established groundwater organic pollution source identification system, finally applied the system to the identification of typical contaminated sites. First, grasp the basis of the

Field-scale relationships among soil properties and shallow groundwater quality.

It is important to understand the link between land surface/soil properties and shallow groundwater quality. To that end, soil properties and near-water-table groundwater chemistry of a shallow, unconfined aquifer were measured on a 100-m grid on a 64-ha irrigated field in southeastern North Dakota. Soil properties and hydrochemistry were compared via multivariate analysis that included product-moment correlations and factor analysis/principal component analysis. Topographic low areas where the water table was in close proximity to the soil surface generally had higher apparent electrical cond

[Solute transport modeling application in groundwater organic contaminant source identification].

Investigation and numerical simulation, based on RT3D (reactive transport in 3-dimensions)were used to identify the source of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE) in the groundwater of a city in the north of China and reverse the input intensity. Multiple regressions were applied to analyze the influenced factors of input intensity of PCE and TCE using Stepwise function in Matlab. The results indicate that the factories and industries are the source of the PCE and TCE in groundwater. Natural attenuation was identified and the natural attenuation rates are 93.15%, 61.70% and 61

Tracing the groundwater influx into the Yamuna River using radon (222Rn).

Understanding the surface water-groundwater exchange is essential for the sustainable water resource management, contaminant transport assessment, and overall health of the river ecosystem. Radon (222Rn) is a widely used natural tracer for identifying the groundwater discharge to rivers because of its conservative behavior, short half-life (3.82 days) and activity concentration relatively much higher in groundwater than surface water. Despite the hydrological importance of the Yamuna River, the groundwater exchange along its middle and lower reaches remains poorly understood. This study presen

Salinization Characteristics and Controlling Mechanisms of Coastal Groundwater in Tianjin, China.

Coastal groundwater systems are highly susceptible to seawater intrusion and salinization. However, complex depositional settings and multiple geochemical processes have made it difficult to understand the mechanism of groundwater salinization. To characterize coastal groundwater salinization and elucidate its controlling mechanisms in Tianjin, China, a total of 228 groundwater samples were collected. The degree of groundwater salinization and associated hydrochemical evolution was systematically investigated using the groundwater quality index for seawater intrusion (GQISWI) and some hydroche

Use of upcycled biosolids for bioremediation of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents.

Trichloroethene (TCE) is a widespread toxic groundwater contaminant; thus, the development of inexpensive and accessible remediation materials is needed. Bioremediation of TCE under field conditions often requires the addition of carbon amendments. This study examines the use of biosolids at a field site as a sustainable carbon-rich and microbial amendment. A trench with amendments was installed upstream of a TCE-contaminated site, which was filled with biosolids, limestone, and biochar. Field monitoring of water quality parameters was compared with microbial community changes in soil samples

The saline groundwater legacy of a large buried coastal paleo-estuary.

Elevated groundwater salinity in coastal regions threatens the beneficial use of fresh groundwater. Coastal groundwater management typically focuses on preventing intrusion from modern sources of seawater; however, past geological processes can also leave a legacy of saline groundwater now hidden in the subsurface. Here, multiple extensive airborne electromagnetic surveys provide detailed evidence of residual salinity from a paleo-estuary filling a late Pleistocene incised valley impacting more than 10,000 km2 that is now hidden beneath coastal Louisiana's deltaic plain. Our results show that

Remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons in contaminated groundwater with the use of surfactants and biosurfactants.

Remediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater is challenging due to the large volume of contaminated water, restricted aquifer access, and the recalcitrance of hydrocarbons. This study evaluates chemically-based surfactants (A and B, comprised of alcohols, esters and distillates from petroleum) and biosurfactants (C and BS, containing enzymes and microbial-derived surfactants) to enhance petroleum-hydrocarbon remediation. Surfactants/biosurfactants were evaluated under environmental conditions mimicking Arabic Region groundwater. The influence of factors like surfactant to crude oil rati

Pharmaceuticals in soil and groundwater: Analytical methods, sources, and mitigation techniques.

Pharmaceuticals have long been used to treat diseases in humans and animals and to control pests of plants/crops. However, with the identification of these contaminants in the environment, it is of major concern. While they have been documented either in soil or groundwater as separate entities, there are limited investigations on their sources. Also, identification methods and mitigation techniques of these contaminants in soils and groundwater are not well understood. Herein, studies on soil and groundwater pharmaceuticals from 2011 to 2025 were selected from PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus,

Submarine groundwater discharge and associated metal elements into an urbanized bay.

In this study, geochemical tracers (radium isotopes) and heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr and As) were analyzed to derive the submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and associated metal fluxes during four seasons in an urbanized bay (Daya Bay, China). Results showed that Pb and Zn were the main pollutants in bay water. SGD was found to exhibit an obvious seasonal trend (autumn > summer > spring > winter). Such seasonal patterns may be related to the hydraulic gradient between groundwater level and sea level, storm surges and tidal range. SGD was a dominant source of marine metal elements, contribut

Photo-sterilization of groundwater by tellurium and enhancement by micro/nano bubbles.

In rural areas where low-temperature groundwater is used as a drinking water source, cost-effective sterilization techniques are needed to prevent groundwater consumers from the disease risks triggered by pathogenic microorganisms like Escherichia coli and fungal spores. In this study, micro/nano bubbles (MNBs) coupled with the tellurium (Te)-based catalysts were used to considerably enhance the solar disinfection (SODIS) efficiency while overcoming the intrinsic defects of SODIS, particularly in low-temperature. Sterilization tests showed that 6.5 log10 cfu/mL of E. coli K-12 and 4.0 log10 cf

A comprehensive review on permeable reactive barrier for the remediation of groundwater contamination.

Groundwater quality is deteriorating due to contamination from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Traditional "Pump and Treat" techniques of treating the groundwater suffer from the disadvantages of a small-scale and energy-intensive approach. Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs), owing to their passive operation, offer a more sustainable strategy for remediation. This promising technique focuses on eliminating heavy metal pollutants and hazardous aromatic compounds by physisorption, chemisorption, precipitation, denitrification, and/or biodegradation. Researchers have utilized ZVI, activat
