A quantitative and qualitative investigation into the management of carious primary molars by foundation dentists in primary care in the South East of England.

Introduction Dental caries is the most common reason for hospital admission of children aged 5-9 in the UK. Better management of caries in primary molars would reduce the number of children requiring treatment in hospitals; however, little research has been done into why primary care clinicians do not use an evidence-based approach to caries management for deciduous molars.Aims The aim of this paper is to identify the rationale behind caries management techniques used in primary care, as well as the choice of materials and long-term success of restorations placed.Materials and methods Use of a

Stanley L Drummond-Jackson. Pioneer of intravenous anaesthesia in dentistry.

Stanley Lithgow Drummond-Jackson was born in Northumberland and qualified from Edinburgh University Dental School in 1931. Even in the early stages of his practice he devoted his energies to the problem of pain control in dentistry, publishing his first paper in 1935. In the early 20th century most dental anaesthetics were inhalational with nitrous oxide, ether, ethyl chloride and chloroform. The introduction of intravenous hexobarbitone in 1931 led to bold and enthusiastic researchers like Drummond-Jackson to pioneer its use in dental practice. He published his major work on intravenous hexob

Incidental findings in a consecutive series of digital panoramic radiographs.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of incidental findings (IFs) on digital dental panoramic radiographs (DPRs) of asymptomatic patients attending a general dental practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 6,252 consecutive digital (photostimulatable phosphor) DPRs of patients who visited a Canadian general dental practice for a complete new patient examination. The IFs were grouped into dental-related anomalies, radiopacities and radiopacities in the jaws, changes in the shape of the condyles, and other findings in the jaws, such as tonsill

What do people want from dentistry? An action research approach.

Issues surrounding access to dentistry will be presented from information gathered during an action research project targeting three population groups. This project was conducted by students in the Dental Hygiene Degree Completion Program at the University of British Columbia and by the dental hygiene diploma students at Camosun College. In contrast to typical empirical dental studies which are validated by statistical presentation, action research uses an interview process and qualitative analysis to identify what people really think, believe and do. College students, independent-living senio

Allergic contact dermatitis in dentistry.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in dentistry may affect dentists and orthodontists, technicians, nurses and patients. Changes to dental practice in recent years have altered the reported frequencies of allergens causing ACD in both dental personnel and patients. Allergic contact dermatitis to medicaments, metals and glutaraldehyde were previously common allergens in dentistry; however, widespread adoption of rubber gloves by staff has resulted in a significant increase in ACD to glove allergens in both dental staff and their patients, while affording protection against the traditional allerg

Methodologically the diagnostic records of 3238 patients of an orthodontic practice in Magdeburg, Germany, were evaluated. In addition to determining the frequency of hypodontia (8.1%), special attention was paid to accompanying micro-symptoms. 169 family members of 35 patients with teeth aplasia were questioned and examined and then extended family tables were drawn up.
