Genetic diversity of equine piroplasmosis agents in Guadeloupe (Caribbeans): first report of Theileria haneyi, evaluation of diagnostic tools and impact of horse movement.

Equine piroplasmosis is a major tick-borne horse disease, caused by the intracellular development of piroplasms (Theileria equi sensu lato and Babesia caballi), with significant economic and sanitary consequences. In 2024, 203 blood samples were collected in Guadeloupe (Caribbean) from asymptomatic horses. Using an 18S rRNA nested PCR (nPCR) specific for each equine genus parasite, 79 samples tested positive for Theileria equi and 9 for Babesia caballi, resulting in respective prevalence of 38.9% and 4.4%. Three horses were co-infected. For B. caballi, 18S rRNA sequence analysis revealed the p

In Utero Chlordecone Exposure and Thyroid, Metabolic, and Sex-Steroid Hormones at the Age of Seven Years: A Study From the TIMOUN Mother-Child Cohort in Guadeloupe.

BACKGROUND: Chlordecone is an endocrine-disrupting chemical with well recognized estrogenic and progestagenic properties. This organochlorine insecticide was extensively used in the French West Indies from 1973 to 1993 to control the banana root borer. Due to its poor degradation in the environment, permanently polluted soil is responsible for the current contamination of the food chain and human beings. We aimed to examine the relationship of in utero exposure to chlordecone and thyroid (thyroid stimulating hormone [TSH], free tri-iodothyronine [FT3], free thyroxine [FT4]), metabolic (insulin

Wide Distribution and Specific Resistance Pattern to Third-Generation Cephalosporins of Enterobacter cloacae Complex Members in Humans and in the Environment in Guadeloupe (French West Indies).

Species belonging to Enterobacter cloacae complex have been isolated in numerous environments and samples of various origins. They are also involved in opportunistic infections in plants, animals, and humans. Previous prospection in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) indicated a high frequency of E. cloacae complex strains resistant to third-generation cephalosporins (3GCs) in a local lizard population (Anolis marmoratus), but knowledge of the distribution and resistance of these strains in humans and the environment is limited. The aim of this study was to compare the distribution and antibiotic

Clinical and Geriatric Profiles of Centenarians Living in Long-Term Care Facilities in Martinique, a Validated Blue Zone, and Neighboring Guadeloupe (French Caribbean Islands).

Martinique has recently been described as one of the world's five "Blue Zones" of longevity, while the status of Guadeloupe remains to be established. This study described the observed proportion and clinical and geriatric profiles of centenarians living in sampled long-term care settings in Martinique and Guadeloupe. Data from two observational cohorts of nursing home (n = 332) and foster family residents (n = 107) were pooled. Among 439 participants, 13 (3.0%) were centenarians (mean age 102.1 ± 2.4 years; 76.9% women). Compared with younger residents (mean age 80.8 ± 9.8 years), centenarian

Characterization of the natural bacterial microbiota of pathogenic free-living amoebae (Acanthamoeba spp. and Naegleria fowleri) isolated from rivers and tap water in Guadeloupe.

Free-living amoebae (FLA) are ubiquitous protists found in water, feeding mainly on bacteria. While most FLA are harmless, Acanthamoeba spp. and Naegleria fowleri can cause keratitis and/or meningitis. FLA can host amoeba-resistant bacteria (ARB), but their natural bacterial microbiota is largely unknown. This study aimed to identify the natural bacterial microbiota of Naegleria fowleri, Acanthamoeba castellanii, Acanthamoeba lenticulata, and Acanthamoeba sp. T17, isolated from untreated (rivers) and treated (tap) waters in Guadeloupe. The whole bacterial microbiota of the water source and the

Decline of a sylvatic focus of Schistosoma mansoni in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) following the competitive displacement of the snail host Biomphalaria glabrata by Ampullaria glauca.

Grand Etang lake in Guadeloupe is a focus of intestinal schistosomiasis characterized by the virtual absence of human contact and the presence of a heavily infested rat population. The lake, with a surface area of 0.03 km2, is situated in rain forest at an altitude of 450 m. Originally it contained an extensive belt of the floating plant Pistia stratiotes which provided a favourable habitat for Biomphalaria glabrata, the intermediate host snail of Schistosoma mansoni. In 1974 and 1975, a low prevalence (about 3%) of S. mansoni was observed in B. glabrata while a high prevalence (about 60%) was

Antimicrobial Resistance in Wildlife in Guadeloupe (French West Indies): Distribution of a Single bla CTX-M-1/IncI1/ST3 Plasmid Among Humans and Wild Animals.

Limited data are available on the contribution of wildlife to the spread of antibacterial resistance. We determined the prevalence of resistance to antibiotics in Escherichia coli isolates collected from wild animals in 2013 and 2014 and the genetic basis for resistance to third-generation cephalosporin in Guadeloupe. We recovered 52 antibiotic-resistant (AR) E. coli strains from 48 of the 884 (5.4%) wild animals tested (46 iguanas, 181 birds, 289 anoles, and 368 rodents at 163 sampling sites). Epidemiologic study of the association between human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 and Strongyloides stercoralis infection in female blood donors (Guadeloupe, French West Indies).

This case control study was conducted among female blood donors in Guadeloupe. A total of 85 HTLV-1 positive subjects were matched by age (+/- 5 years) in a 1:3 ratio to 255 HTLV-1 negative controls. The mean age was 48.5 and 48.9 years respectively. Ethnic, environmental and socio-economic risk factors were studied. Four risk factors were found independently associated with HTLV-1 seropositivity: Strongyloides stercoralis antibodies (OR = 3.6, CI 1.8, 7.3), low socio-economic status (OR = 2.0 CI 1.0, 4.0), low educational level (OR = 2.0 CI 1.0, 4.0) and agricultural activity (OR = 2.8 CI 1.4

Reassessing the distribution of Burkholderia pseudomallei outside known endemic areas using animal serological screening combined with environmental surveys: The case of Les Saintes (Guadeloupe) and French Guiana.

BACKGROUND: Melioidosis, an emerging infectious disease that affects both humans and animals, is caused by the soil-dwelling bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. It is endemic in South and Southeast Asia, and northern Australia, causing an estimated 165,000 human cases annually worldwide. Human cases have been reported in the French West Indies (Martinique and Guadeloupe) since the 1990s. Conversely, no human cases have been reported in French Guiana, a French territory in South America. Our study aimed to investigate whether B. pseudomallei is locally established in Guadeloupe and French Guia

Schistosoma mansoni: comparison of a Caribbean and African strain and experimental crossing based on compatibility with intermediate hosts and Rattus rattus.

To elucidate changes relative to compatibility with intermediate and definitive hosts affecting Schistosoma mansoni since it was introduced to the New World, the compatibility of S. mansoni from Africa (the Cameroons), from the Caribbean (Guadeloupe), and those resulting from experimental crosses with the gastropods Biomphalaria glabrata and B. pfeifferi has been studied. Results show that S. mansoni, regardless of its origin or its usual snail host, always infects B. pfeifferi more successfully than B. glabrata. The success rate with B. pfeifferi is 100% with 5 miracidia of S. mansoni from Gu

Clearance of schistosome parasites by resistant genotypes at a single genomic region in Biomphalaria glabrata snails involves cellular components of the hemolymph.

Schistosomiasis is one of the most detrimental neglected tropical diseases. Controlling the spread of this parasitic illness requires effective sanitation, access to chemotherapeutic drugs, and control over populations of the freshwater snails, such as Biomphalaria glabrata, that are essential intermediate hosts for schistosomes. Effectively controlling this disease, while minimising ecological implications of such control, will require an extensive understanding of the immunological interactions between schistosomes and their molluscan intermediate hosts. Here we histologically characterise t

Spatio-temporal dynamics and biotic substrate preferences of benthic dinoflagellates in the Lesser Antilles, Caribbean sea.

Epibenthic dinoflagellates were monitored monthly over an 18 month period in Guadeloupe and Martinique (Lesser Antilles, Caribbean Sea). These islands are located in the second most affected ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) region of the world. Guadeloupe presented five times more total epibenthic dinoflagellates and two times less abundant Gambierdiscus spp. compared to Martinique, although the area of frequent CFP outbreaks covers Guadeloupe and not Martinique. Results did not show any clear seasonal variations of benthic dinoflagellates abundances. Temperature and salinity were not driving pa
