BACKGROUND: Haemoproteus parasites (Haemosporida, Haemoproteidae) are cosmopolitan in birds and recent molecular studies indicate enormous genetic diversity of these pathogens, which cause diseases in non-adapted avian hosts. However, life-cycles remain unknown for the majority of Haemoproteus species. Information on their exoerythrocytic development is particularly fragmental and controversial. This study aimed to gain new knowledge on life-cycle of the widespread blood parasite Haemoproteus majoris.
METHODS: Turdus pilaris and Parus major naturally infected with lineages hPHYBOR04 and hPARU

A total of eight juvenile great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) were found lethargic and on the ground in spring 2015, 2016, and 2017, including one fledgling from Louisiana, USA and seven nestlings from California, USA. One bird survived to release after rehabilitation; seven birds died or were euthanized due to poor prognosis and were necropsied. Necropsy findings were similar and included general pallor of all tissues, particularly the subcutis and lungs, and enlarged liver and spleen. Histopathology revealed multi-organ necrosis, abundant meronts containing merozoites, and intracytoplasmic

Avian haemosporidian infections have been associated with disease outbreaks in zoos and rehabilitation centers globally. This study aimed to determine the occurrence and genetic diversity of avian haemosporidian parasites in captive birds at the National Zoological Garden in South Africa. One hundred and eighty-three blood samples from five orders and 15 species of captive flamingos, vultures, owls, ibises and parrots were analyzed for haemosporidia by nested polymerase chain reaction assays. The samples were collected as part of the zoo's studbook and archived at South African National Biodiv

BACKGROUND: Generating parasite genomes is challenging when little of the DNA in infected host tissue is from the parasite. We used selective whole genome amplification (SWGA) to generate genomic data from wildlife samples of the avian haemosporidian Haemoproteus majoris (lineage PARUS1) and its host, the blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus).
METHODS: We used SWGA to amplify the parasite DNA in nine avian blood samples collected between 1996 and 2021, and subsequently performed short-read sequencing and bioinformatically separated the host and parasite reads in each sample.
RESULTS: SWGA increased

Sex biases in prevalence of disease are often attributed to intrinsic factors, such as physiological differences while a proximate role of extrinsic factors such as behavioural or ecological differences may be more difficult to establish. We combined large-scale screening for the presence and lineage identity of avian malaria (haemosporidian) parasites, in 1234 collared flycatchers (Ficedula albicollis) with life-history information from each bird to establish the location and timing of infection. We found an overall infection rate of 36.2% ± 0.03 (95% CI) with 25 distinct malaria lineages. In

Introduction Haemoproteus spp. (Haemosporida: Haemoproteidae) are widespread avian blood parasites known for their high genetic diversity and host specificity. Haemoproteus spp. can cause internal organ damage to their vertebrate hosts, which raises concerns about their health impacts. However, the distribution of Haemoproteus spp. in Africa, particularly among non-passerine birds, remains poorly understood, with unknown implications for species conservation. Sub-Saharan Africa, including The Gambia, hosts several critically endangered vulture species, including Hooded Vultures (Necrosyrtes mo

Mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue threaten billions of people and cause the death of hundreds of thousands annually. Recent studies have revealed that many mosquito species regularly engage in high-altitude wind-borne migration, but its epidemiological significance remains unclear. The hypothesis that high-flying mosquitoes spread pathogens over long distances has not been directly tested. Here, we report that high-flying mosquitoes are commonly infected with arboviruses, protozoans, and helminths and provide a insights into this pathogen-vector aerial network. A total of 1,01

Leucocytozoon species are cosmopolitan and prevalent avian parasites, with some infections being lethal, mainly due to the exo-erythrocytic development of the parasite in bird tissues. The patterns of exo-erythrocytic development in Leucocytozoon spp. infections in wild birds remain poorly studied. This study investigated the development of Leucocytozoon spp. tissue stages in tits (Paridae). Great tits (Parus major), Blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus), and Coal tits (Periparus ater) were screened for infections using an integrative approach that consisted of microscopic analysis of thin blood sme

PURPOSE: Haemosporidian parasites of birds such as Plasmodium, Haemoproteus, and Leucocytozoon have complex life cycles involving two types of hosts: Vertebrates and invertebrates. The prevalence of these parasites is influenced by the interactions between these hosts and the environment. Birds infected with avian haemosporidians serve as a valuable model for studying the effects of environmental factors on the spread of endemic pathogens.
METHODS: In our study in southern Iran, which is known for its mild winters and hot summers, 237 blood samples from 41 bird species were analyzed. Each sam

Cytauxzoon felis is a tick-transmitted intraerythrocytic apicomplexan infecting felids in the southeastern and midwestern United States. Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are the natural wildlife reservoir of C. felis, where in enzootic areas prevalence can reach 100%. Domestic cats can be subclinically infected with C. felis or can develop cytauxzoonosis. Two studies have documented the presence of C. felis in domestic cats in Illinois; these studies have shown a limited number of cases submitted to specialty labs. During 2014-2018, we obtained blood samples collected by veterinary staff from 514 cats tha

Parasites of the genus Haemoproteus are vector-borne avian haemosporidia commonly found in bird species of the world. Haemoproteus infections are typically considered relatively benign in birds. However, some Haemoproteus species cause severe disease and mortality, especially for captive birds removed from their original habitat. In September 2018, a captive 15-year-old snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus), kept in a zoological garden of Japan, died subacutely after presenting leg dysfunction. This case showed significantly low PCV and elevated AST, ALT, CK, and LDH values. Many megalomeronts with prom

Avian haemosporidians are a diverse group of apicomplexan parasites that are globally distributed and infect almost all avian orders. Haemosporidian surveys of raptors (birds of prey) are underrepresented compared to those of songbirds, perhaps because of the greater difficulty in capturing and handling raptors. In this study, we captured raptors over a 7-yr period from northeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. Using standard molecular methods, we successfully screened 595 individuals representing 5 species of hawks (Accipitriformes), 3 species of falcons (Falconiformes), and 7 spe

Vector-borne diseases in the United States have recently increased as a result of the changing nature of vectors, hosts, reservoirs, parasite/pathogens, and the ecological and environmental conditions. While most focus has been on mosquito-borne pathogens affecting humans, little is known regarding parasites of companion animal, livestock and wildlife and their potential mosquito hosts in the United States. This study assessed the prevalence of mature infections of Dirofilaria immitis and avian malaria parasites (Haemosporida) within urban mosquito (Diptera, Culicidae) communities in Oklahoma.

Avian haemosporidia are a group of vector-borne hemoparasites that are non-pathogenic to native bird hosts; however, some species/lineages cause severe disease or death in poultry and non-native birds. We investigated haemosporidian parasites in wild bird carcasses collected from four prefectures in eastern Japan. DNA was extracted from the liver, and the haemosporidian cytochrome b gene was amplified by nested PCR followed by direct sequencing. Of the 40 bird samples belonging to 25 species, 12 haemosporidian lineages were detected: four from Plasmodium, one from Haemoproteus, and seven from
