Fox-Fordyce disease following axillary laser hair removal.

BACKGROUND: Fox-Fordyce disease (FFD) is a relatively rare entity with a typical clinical presentation. Numerous studies have described unifying histopathological features of FFD, which together suggest a defect in the follicular infundibulum resulting in follicular dilation with keratin plugging, subsequent apocrine duct obstruction, and apocrine gland dilation, with eventual extravasation of the apocrine secretions as the primary histopathogenic events in the evolution of the disease. OBSERVATIONS: We describe a case of FFD that developed in a 41-year-old woman 3 months after completing a s

Alopecia areata: a tissue specific autoimmune disease of the hair follicle.

The goal of this review is to introduce the immunologic community to alopecia areata as a model system for the study of tissue directed autoimmune disease. Alopecia areata is marked by autoimmune assault on the hair follicle resulting in hair loss. It is linked to HLA-DQ3 and evidence suggests it is mediated by T-lymphocytes with a TH1 cytokine profile. Hair follicles are an immune protected site with deficient MHC expression. Evidence is presented suggesting that alopecia areata results from loss of immune privilege with presentation of autoantigens. Alopecia areata is one of the most common

Invention of automated numerical algorithm adopting binarization for the evaluation of scalp hair coverage: An image analysis providing a substitute for phototrichogram and global photography assessment for hair diseases.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of therapeutic modalities for hair disease can be evaluated globally by photo assessment and more precisely by phototrichogram (PTG). However, the latter procedure is laborious, time consuming, subject to inter-observer variation, and requires hair clipping. OBJECTIVE: To establish an automated and patient/investigator friendly methodology enabling quantitative hair amount evaluation for daily clinical practice. METHODS: A novel automated numerical algorithm (aNA) adopting digital image binarization (i.e., black and white color conversion) was invented to evaluate ha

Preclinical signs of Parkinson's disease: A possible association of Parkinson's disease with skin and hair features.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by loss of dopaminergic neuromelanin containing neurons in the substantia nigra. Peripheral melanin, found in skin and hair, and neuromelanin appear to have some characteristics in common and share the same precursor for their synthesis; therefore, skin and hair features could be associated with PD. We hypothesize that earlier age at onset of hair greying, greater tendency to sunburn, difficulty tanning and dysregulation of sebum production are more common among PD patients due to genetically determined lower constitutive

The Effect of Covid-19 on the Hair Diseases Observed in Health Care Providers: Analysis of 513 Participants.

INTRODUCTION: The Covid-19 pandemic has been shown to have major acute and chronic impacts on the skin. Various studies reported that there has been an increase in the number of patients referred to outpatient dermatology clinics with the complaint of variable hair diseases during the era of Covid-19. Hair seems to be substantially affected by both the infection itself and anxiety/stress provoked by the pandemic. Therefore, understanding the impact of Covid-19 on the clinical course of variable hair diseases has become a major concern in dermatology practice. OBJECTIVES: To examine the freque

A noninvasive test for human prion disease using hair roots and scalp.

Invasive tests like cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination are highly effective for diagnosing human prion disease (HPD). Real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) CSF assay demonstrates 80-90% sensitivity for HPD diagnosis. To establish a minimally invasive diagnostic approach, we evaluated RT-QuIC testing on hair root and scalp samples. We collected scalp samples from 22 HPD and 5 non-HPD patients during pathological examinations and analyzed them using RT-QuIC assay and neuropathological methods. In our prospective study, hair root and CSF samples from 300 patients were tested using RT-

Comparative studies of hair shaft components between healthy and diseased donors.

Globally, the rapid aging of the population is predicted to become even more severe in the second half of the 21st century. Thus, it is expected to establish a growing expectation for innovative, non-invasive health indicators and diagnostic methods to support disease prevention, care, and health promotion efforts. In this study, we aimed to establish a new health index and disease diagnosis method by analyzing the minerals and free amino acid components contained in hair shaft. We first evaluated the range of these components in healthy humans and then conducted a comparative analysis of thes

Cell membrane-coated human hair nanoparticles for precise disease therapies.

Precision medicine is the ultimate goal for current disease therapies, including tumor and infection. The lack of specific targeted drugs for liver cancer and the lack of specific anti-infective drugs in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcer with infection (DFI) are the representative obstacles in those 2 major diseases currently plaguing human beings. Inventing natural biocompatible polymers derived from natural materials is one of the main development directions of current bio-medical materials. Though previous studies have demonstrated the potential application values of human black hair-der

The Danger of Being Too Sympathetic: Norepinephrine in Alzheimer's Disease and Graying of Hair.

Although alterations in the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) with age have been reported, and serious degenerative diseases of the autonomic nervous system such as multiple system atrophy are more likely to strike older people, connections between dysregulated adrenergic receptors and age-associated diseases and phenotypes have not been well studied. Two recent reports suggest that SNS may be more closely connected than previously appreciated. First, low nanomolar concentrations of Alzheimer's disease (AD)-associated Aβ42-amyloid oligomers alter signaling by SNS neurotransmitter norepinephrine

Urethral Stone Disease Leading to Retention After Hair-bearing Neophalloplasty.

A 35-year-old male patient with a past history of traumatic penile amputation and subsequent penile reconstruction with a radial artery free flap phalloplasty presented to the urology clinic for urinary retention and complaint of a firm penile mass. The patient had been lost to follow-up for 2 years before this presentation. Patient had a suprapubic tube in place from initial surgery, with imaging showing 2 large uroliths encrusted around the end. Urethral stricture was suspected in the patient. On cystoscopy, an additional obstructing urolith was found in penile urethra, appearing to have for

Osmotically induced motility of outer hair cells: implications for Menière's disease.

Osmolarity changes in inner ear fluids have long been considered to be contributing factors to Menière's disease. Our present study demonstrates that small changes in the osmolarity of a surrounding in vitro medium induce fast contractions (hypo-osmotic solution) or elongations (hyperosmotic solution) in isolated outer hair cells of the guinea pig. These changes were reversible upon returning cells to iso-osmotic conditions. Up to five cycles of shape change could be sustained by these cells without obvious detriment to their morphology. These findings suggest that fluctuant changes in osmolar

[Menkes' disease (new skin and hair ultrastructural abnormalities) (author's transl)].

The authors report the sixth case of Menkes' kinky hair disease. This boy has been observed for as long as 16 months, and he his still alive at the time of publication. This genetic, X linked disorder of copper metabolism is always fatal in childhood. Diagnosis is evoked when is noted the conjunction of progressive cerebral degeneration, seizures, with pili torti and monilethrix. It can be asserted with the very low copper and cerulo-plasmin blood levels. Recognition of the disease in utero might be possible. New findings in skin' electron microscopy and hair' scanning electron microscopy are

Menkes' kinky hair disease: a light and electron microscopic study of the eye.

Light and electron microscopic studies of the ocular tissue of a case of Menkes' kinky hair disease are described. The copper deficiency responsible for this systemic and neurologic disease appears to cause a progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells, loss of nerve fibers, and optic atrophy. The pigment epithelium is also abnormal with only small and irregular melanin granules present among electron-dense inclusion bodies. Abnormal elastica is present in Bruch's membrane.

Relapse of treated anti-GBM disease following hair dye use.

An 18-year-old woman was treated for acute kidney injury (AKI) secondary to antiglomerular basement membrane (GBM) disease with prednisolone, cyclophosphamide and plasma exchange. She also had epistaxis at initial presentation with no other organ involvement and achieved good recovery of her kidney function. Two weeks after completing induction treatment, she re-presented with further AKI and pulmonary haemorrhage. She was recommenced on plasma exchange and steroids and was given rituximab. She recovered from her illness with significant improvement to her kidney function. The cause of her rel

Is Hair Removal Necessary after Crystallized Phenol Treatment in Pilonidal Disease?

OBJECTIVE: The most important cause of posttreatment recurrence of pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is the reentry of hair into the skin. The study aimed to investigate the effect of hair removal and its duration on the prevention of recurrence after crystallized phenol treatment. SUBJECT AND METHODS: Patients with PSD who were treated with crystallized phenol treatment were evaluated. Hair in the sacrococcygeal area was removed with depilatory cream before every crystallized phenol procedure, during the treatment, and after treatment once a month for 6 years. Of 1,016 patients, 735 were contact
