[Visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease].

Visual hallucinations have a negative effect on the course of Parkinson's disease (PD), being a source of stress for the patients themselves and caregivers. The article discusses the basic theories and pathogenetic mechanisms of the development of visual hallucinations in PD consisting of the following components: impairment of the visual information received from the retina with subsequent disruption of its processing in the central parts of the visual system; lack of suppression of internally generated images through the ponto-geniculo-occipital system; the invasion of REM sleep patterns in

Auditory Hallucinations: An Audiological Horizon?

BACKGROUND: Interesting data and theories have emerged regarding auditory hallucinations (AHs) in patients with schizophrenia. The possibility that these patients may have changes in the anatomy of the auditory cortex and/or subcortical structures of the central auditory nervous system and present with deficits on audiological tests is important information to the audiology community. However, it seems clear that, in general, audiologists are not sufficiently aware of these findings. PURPOSE: There are two main purposes of this article: (1) to educate audiologists about AHs related to schizop

Olfactory hallucinations in Alzheimer's disease.

We assessed the frequency, duration, and degree of unpleasantness of olfactory hallucinations in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Informants of 31 AD patients were invited to rate the frequency, duration, and degree of unpleasantness of olfactory, auditory, and visual hallucinations. Analysis demonstrated little occurrence of olfactory hallucinations compared with auditory or visual hallucinations. Results also demonstrated that olfactory hallucinations span from a few seconds to one minute, a duration that was similar to that of auditory and visual hallucinations. Olfactory hallucinations were rated

Treating hallucinations in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Hallucinations in Parkinson's disease are common, can complicate medication management and significantly impact upon the quality of life of patients and their carers. AREAS COVERED: This review aims to examine current evidence for the management of hallucinations in Parkinson's disease. EXPERT OPINION: Treatment of hallucinations in Parkinson's disease should be both individualized and multifaceted. Screening, education, medication review and the avoidance of common triggers are important. For well-formed visual hallucinations, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors are recommended fi

Minor Hallucinations in Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Hallucinations may have a broad spectrum and include so-called minor hallucinations (MHs). MHs include passage hallucinations (PHs), visual illusions, and presence hallucinations (PrHs). OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and characteristics of MHs in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients, and to describe their potential relationship with cognition, behavioral symptoms, and use of psychoactive drugs. METHODS: We have recruited prospectively and consecutively 268 subjects (90 AD mild-moderate drug-naïve patients, 78 aMCI, and 100 contr

Visual Hallucinations and Paranoid Delusions.

Visual well-formed hallucinations, fluctuations in the level of cognition, and alertness and extrapyramidal signs are core features of dementia with Lewy bodies. Some patients realize that what they are seeing or hearing are just hallucinations and learn to accept them. Others, however experience these hallucinations as quite real and cannot be dissuaded from the firm belief that they are. In fact, efforts to dissuade them often serve only to confirm the often associated paranoid delusions and this may lead to a catastrophic ending. Hence, it is best not to contradict the patient. Instead, att

Auditory hallucinations induced by trazodone.

A 26-year-old female outpatient presenting with a depressive state suffered from auditory hallucinations at night. Her auditory hallucinations did not respond to blonanserin or paliperidone, but partially responded to risperidone. In view of the possibility that her auditory hallucinations began after starting trazodone, trazodone was discontinued, leading to a complete resolution of her auditory hallucinations. Furthermore, even after risperidone was decreased and discontinued, her auditory hallucinations did not recur. These findings suggest that trazodone may induce auditory hallucinations

Auditory hallucinations: expectation-perception model.

In this paper, we aimed to present a hypothesis that would explain the mechanism of auditory hallucinations, one of the main symptoms of schizophrenia. We propose that auditory hallucinations arise from abnormalities in the predictive coding which underlies normal perception, specifically, from the absence or attenuation of prediction error. The suggested deficiencies in processing prediction error could arise from (1) abnormal modulation of thalamus by prefrontal cortex, (2) absence or impaired transmission of external input, (3) dysfunction of the auditory and association cortex, (4) neurotr

Auditory hallucinations in anorexia nervosa.

The paper describes two case studies of patients with anorexia nervosa who suffer from auditory hallucinations as the only psychotic symptom. A review of the literature regarding clinical cases of anorexic patients with hallucinations is discussed. Hallucinations in anorexic patients are conceptualized according to different theoretical models which point to a dimensional view of eating disorders.

Auditory hallucinations: nomenclature and classification.

INTRODUCTION: The literature on the possible neurobiologic correlates of auditory hallucinations is expanding rapidly. For an adequate understanding and linking of this emerging knowledge, a clear and uniform nomenclature is a prerequisite. The primary purpose of the present article is to provide an overview of the nomenclature and classification of auditory hallucinations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relevant data were obtained from books, PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. RESULTS: The results are presented in the form of several classificatory arrangements of auditory hallucinations, go

[Auditory hallucinations and functional imaging].

Auditory verbal hallucinations are a common symptom of schizophrenia. In general, hallucinations can affect all sensory modalities and occur in many neuropsychiatric disorders. They also serve the psychology of perception as the classic example of sensory experience in the absence of adequate external stimuli. Functional imaging studies showed the auditory cortex, the limbic system and language areas, both motor and sensory, to be active during auditory hallucinations. The psychological and neurophysiological models of hallucination can be integrated if we consider that patients with schizophr

Musical hallucinations induced by drugs.

Dipyridamole is an antiplatelet agent and a vasodilator which is increasingly being used for the secondary prevention of ischaemic stroke and transient ischemic attack, either alone or in combination with acetylsalicylic acid. We describe an 83-year-old woman who had developed musical hallucinations within days of initiating dipyridamole. Her psychiatric and neurological evaluation was otherwise unremarkable. After the discontinuation of dipyridamole the hallucinations ceased within a couple of days. To the best of our knowledge this is the first case of auditory hallucinations associated with

OBJECTIVE: To describe the phenomenology and pathophysiology of complex visual hallucinations (CVH) in various organic states, in particular Charles Bonnet syndrome and peduncular hallucinosis. METHOD: Three cases of CVH in the setting of pontine infarction, thalamic infarction and temporoparietal epileptiform activity are presented and the available psychiatric, neurological and biological literature on the structures of the central nervous system involved in producing hallucinatory states is reviewed. RESULTS: Complex visual hallucinations can arise from a variety of processes involving th

[Hallucinations during treatment with hydrochloroquine].

INTRODUCTION: We report an unexpected cenesthetic hallucination-type neuropsychiatric side effect with hydrochloroquine (Plaquenil) in a patient treated for an erosive plantar lichen planus. OBSERVATION: A 75 year-old woman was hospitalized for a handicapping erosive plantar lichen. Treatment with hydrochloroquine (400 mg/day) was initiated, associated with topical corticosteroids and a short course of oral acorticosteroids (0.5 mg/kg/day of methylprednisolone). After 10 days of treatment, a short episode of temporo-spatial disorientation occurred, followed by a feeling of depersonalization a

Temporal course of auditory hallucinations.

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine how brain activity associated with auditory verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia changed during hallucinatory events. Activation in the left inferior frontal and right middle temporal gyri was evident 6-9 s before the person signalled the onset of the hallucination, whereas activation in the bilateral temporal gyri and the left insula coincided with the perception of the hallucination. This supports the hypothesis that during hallucinations activation in cortical regions mediating the generation of inner speech may precede the engageme
