Microbial decomposition of biomass residues mitigated hydrogeochemical dynamics in strongly alkaline bauxite residues.

Effective neutralization of strongly alkaline conditions in bauxite residues (BR) is the fundamental step to initiate the process of eco-engineering BR into growth substrate (or soil-like medium) for direct phytostabilization with pioneer plant species. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of microbial decomposition of organic matter (OM) (i.e., biomass residues) in neutralizing the strong alkalinity of residues under saturated conditions, together with the regulatory role of calcium sulfate (CaSO4) addition. Admixing OM (i.e., sugarcane mulch, Lucerne hay) alone in the BR sig

Diversity of macaque microbiota compared to the human counterparts.

Studies on the microbial communities in non-human primate hosts provide unique insights in both evolution and function of microbes related to human health and diseases. Using 16S rRNA gene amplicon profiling, we examined the oral, anal and vaginal microbiota in a group of non-captive rhesus macaques (N = 116) and compared the compositions with the healthy communities from Human Microbiome Project. The macaque microbiota was dominated by Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria; however, there were marked differences in phylotypes enriched across body sites indicative of strong niche specia

Mariculture Probiotics: A Scoping Review of Research Trends, Knowledge Gaps and Opportunities.

The use of probiotics - live microorganisms - to enhance growth and prevent disease in mariculture species is an emerging alternative to conventional methods including antibiotics, vaccines and chemical intervention. While others have reviewed specific host organisms and probiotic genera, this review synthesises the scientific literature on the use of probiotics across a range of marine organisms to identify knowledge gaps and research opportunities. We identified widespread methodological heterogeneity, making direct inter-study comparisons difficult. Despite this limitation, 86% of in vivo s

Diversity and functional genomic insights into antimicrobial resistance and aromatic hydrocarbon degradation genes in the Red Sea coast microbial community.

INTRODUCTION: The Red Sea is a unique oligotrophic marine ecosystem characterized by high salinity, elevated temperatures, and increasing anthropogenic pressures along its coastal regions. However, coastal sediment-associated microbial communities and their functional potential, particularly regarding antimicrobial resistance and aromatic compound degradation, remain insufficiently explored. METHODS: This study investigated bacterial diversity in coastal sediments from six sites along the eastern Red Sea using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and gained functional insights through genome seq

The Prokaryotic Community of Hypersaline Soils from the Odiel Saltmarshes: Culturomics Versus Metagenomics.

Hypersaline soils are poly-extreme terrestrial habitats characterized by high salinity, in some cases heavy-metal contamination, temperature fluctuations, and nutrient limitation. These conditions impose strong selective pressures, and many prokaryotic inhabitants still remain uncultured. Here, we conducted an extensive culturomics study of 549 isolates from the hypersaline soils of the Odiel Saltmarshes Natural Area (Southwest Spain) and compared the results with previously generated shotgun metagenomic datasets from the same environment in order to evaluate taxonomic composition, functional

Structural and functional responses of microbial communities in coastal sediments towards anthropogenic pollution caused by ship breaking activities.

Coastal ecosystems, like many others on the planet, face chronic threats from anthropogenic activities. The Alang-Sosiya Ship Breaking Yard (ASSBY) located near Bhavnagar in Gujarat, India, represents one such ecosystem impacted by decades of ship-breaking activities. This study aimed to assess the differences in microbial community composition between polluted coastal samples and pristine samples through high-throughput sequencing. Additionally, microbial co-occurrence networks and genes related to antibiotic and heavy metal resistance were predicted using metagenome mining. The analysis conf

Impact of streptozotocin-induced type 1 and type 2 diabetes on ocular surface microbial signatures in C57BL/6J mice.

The ocular surface (OS), like other mucosal sites, hosts a diverse microbiome. However, the impact of hyperglycemia associated with diabetes on OS microbial composition remains poorly understood. In this study, we established type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) models in C57BL/6J mice by administering high-dose streptozotocin (STZ) for T1DM and low-dose STZ combined with a high-fat diet for T2DM. The OS microbiome was characterized and analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing. The results showed that neither T1DM nor T2DM significantly affected microbial richness comp

Plant growth-promoting characteristics of halotolerant endophytic bacteria isolated from Sporobolus specatus (Vahr) Kunth and Cyperus laevigatus L. of Ethiopian rift valley lakes.

Understanding plant microbes' intimate relationship and search for beneficial microbes is a sustainable alternative to improve plant growth and yield under a wide range of biotic and abiotic stress conditions. More than 20% of the total global agricultural land is affected by salinity. High salinity challenges crop plants by affecting several metabolic pathways and decreasing plant growth and yield. Unlike chemical fertilizers and pesticides, endophytic microbes offer an eco-friendly approach to increasing crop yield via various metabolites during salinity stress. The objective of this study w

Tracking the extracellular and intracellular antibiotic resistance genes across whole year in wastewater of intensive dairy farm.

Monitoring the annual variation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock wastewater is important for determining the high-risk period of transfer and spread of animal-derived antibiotic resistance into the environment. However, the knowledge regarding the variation patterns of ARGs, especially intracellular ARGs (iARGs) and extracellular ARGs (eARGs), over time in livestock wastewater is still unclear. Herein, we conducted a year-round study to trace the profiles of ARGs at a Chinese-intensive dairy farm, focusing on the shifts observed in different months. The results showed signifi

The Development of Microbiota and Metabolome in Small Intestine of Sika Deer (Cervus nippon) from Birth to Weaning.

The dense and diverse community of microorganisms inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract of ruminant animals plays critical roles in the metabolism and absorption of nutrients, and gut associated immune function. Understanding microbial colonization in the small intestine of new born ruminants is a vital first step toward manipulating gut function through interventions during early life to produce long-term positive effects on host productivity and health. Yet the knowledge of microbiota colonization and its induced metabolites of small intestine during early life is still limited. In the prese

Isolation and whole-genome sequencing of antibiotic-resistant bacteria revealed the reservoir for indigenous antibiotic resistance genes in the deepest ocean sediment of the Challenger Deep.

Understanding the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and associated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in remote marine environments is crucial for accessing treats of ARG pollution on a border ecological scale. While most studies focused on anthropogenically disturbed settings, the Challenger Deep, as the deepest ocean habitat, offers a unique opportunity to investigate minimally disturbed resistomes. We revived 123 bacterial isolates from the Challenger Deep sediment, assessed their antibiotic susceptibility, and identified their taxonomy via 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Among th

Role of tenofovir dipivoxil in gut microbiota recovery from HBV-infection induced dysbiosis.

BACKGROUND: Studies have found dysbiosis of the gut microbiota in individuals infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Tenofovir dipivoxil (TDF) is one of the preferred oral antiviral drugs used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB), but the extent to which TDF is able to affect the gut microbiota and inflammatory factors of a patient remains largely unexplored. In this study, we collected stool samples from HBV patients prior to medication and from CHB patients treated with TDF. RESULTS: The gut microbiota and inflammatory factors were assessed in 42 healthy subjects (HC group), 1

Adaptive characteristics of indigenous microflora in an organically contaminated high salinity groundwater.

Salinity, a critical factor, could directly or indirectly affect the microbial community structure and diversity. Changes in salinity levels act as environmental filters that influence the transformation of key microbial species. This study investigates the adaptive characteristics of indigenous microflora in groundwater in relation to external organic pollutants under high salinity stress. A highly mineralized shallow groundwater in Northwest China was conducted as the study area, and six representative sampling points were chosen to explore the response of groundwater hydrochemical parameter
