Two types of renal hamartoma (angiomyolipoma) are presented with emphasis on angiographic findings. Careful analysis of the angiograms can suggest a specific diagnosis. Two important considerations other than angiographic findings are (1) multiplicity of tumors in patients with tuberous sclerosis, and (2) a solitary mass in 40-60-year-old women.

Somatic mosaicism is the usual genetic mechanism in cancers but was generally regarded as a rarity in non-malignant neurological disorders. Over the last decade, it has been shown to be the major cause of a variety of brain malformation syndromes and developmental tumors. It is studied by analyzing DNA samples from brain tissue removed for the surgical treatment of epilepsy, compared to samples from peripheral tissues. It has been shown to be relevant for unilateral malformations and developmental tumors associated with epilepsy. This has been extended to epilepsy with hypothalamic hamartoma i

OBJECTIVE: Nasal chondromesenchymal hamartoma is a rare pathology that can present with a myriad of symptoms to ENT, maxillofacial and ophthalmology departments. This study reviewed the literature on nasal chondromesenchymal hamartoma as well as adding three new cases to the reported literature.
METHOD: This study was an up-to-date review of the world literature with the addition of three new cases to provide the most comprehensive review to date.
RESULTS: A total of 56 patients with nasal chondromesenchymal hamartoma were identified, ranging from children to adults. Nasal symptoms and ocula

BACKGROUND: Fibroma, neurofibroma, and papilloma are the most commonly encountered benign lesions in the nasopharynx. Hamartomas are non-neoplastic overgrowth of mature/differentiated tissue indigenous to the specific part of the body in which they develop. Most hamartomas are located in the liver, spleen, lungs, and pancreas. However, nasopharyngeal hamartoma is rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe here a 77-year-old Japanese woman who presented with a mass arising from the left lateral wall of the nasopharynx. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a soft tissue mass without bony erosion, sugges

In the present paper we report a case of mediastinal tumor which we believe has never been reported. Since surgical treatment, the patient presented good evolution. We discuss the presentation, differential diagnosis and therapy. Finally, we stress the importance of the pathologic findings.

Pulmonary hamartoma, the most common benign tumor of the lung, is most often presented as a solitary pulmonary nodule of a peripheral localization. We report a case of a large, centrally located, invisible in chest X-ray, hystopathologicaly (PH) verified hamartoma. A 63-year-old male was admitted for hospital treatment with obvious symptoms and signs of right-sided lobar pneumonia. His treatment was started with a combination of antibiotics Ceftriaxone and Ciprofloxacin. Because of his obviously bad condition with wheezing and bronchial secret in his lungs, an urgent bronchoscopy was performed

We report of the case of a 41-year-old patient, who had previously undergone thoracic surgery at the age of 16 for a single giant emphysematous bulla. The CT scan showed an abnormal middle mediastinal lesion containing an aerated cystic areas and areas of fat density. The patient underwent surgery and a well-defined mass was found between the mediastinum and the pulmonary hilum, which was able to be completely resected. Microscopic examination disclosed a composite tumour containing a bronchogenic cyst, a benign lipoma and two hamartochondromas. As no similar case had been reported previously,

A 13-year-old Romanian boy presented to the eye clinic with a chief complaint of blurred distance and near vision. The patient reported a history of a boil on his neck that was removed in Russia one year ago. Cover testing demonstrated bilateral end point nystagmus and exotropia. Ocular health evaluation revealed an astrocytic hamartoma and oculo-rotary nystagmus. Referral to a retinal specialist helped confirm the diagnosis of astrocytic hamartoma but did not elucidate on the possible aetiology of the lesion or rule out tuberous sclerosis as the causative agent, as the patient was lost to fol

PURPOSE: A small number of patients with hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) present with infantile spasms (IS) as an initial or early seizure type. We describe the clinical features of IS associated with HH.
METHODS: Our series of patients with HH and epilepsy was reviewed to identify cases with a history of IS. The clinical features and neuroradiological findings in this study group were compared to a control group of patients with HH and refractory epilepsy, but without a history of IS.
RESULTS: We identified six patients with HH and a history of IS in this series (n = 122, 4.9%). Five of the six

Ampullary tumours are uncommon. They may occur with familial polyposis syndromes or neurofibromatosis. It can be difficult to distinguish them from their periampullary counterparts on clinical, radiologic or histologic grounds. Because most ampullary and periampullary tumours are malignant, they tend to be treated by radical surgery. A 67-year-old man was seen with a sporadic ampullary hamartoma that simulated cancer. It was successfully treated by local excision through a transverse duodenotomy.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the MR imaging features of fibrolipomatous hamartoma (FLH) of nerves.
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: MR imaging studies from six patients (three men and three women) were retrospectively reviewed by three musculoskeletal radiologists. In four patients, a biopsy of the nerve lesion was performed. In two patients, biopsy data were unavailable and the diagnosis was based on the clinical history combined with the MR imaging findings.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: MR imaging demonstrated fusiform nerve enlargement that was caused by fatty proliferation and thickening of nerve bundles. Nerve

We described a case of endobronchial hamartoma diagnosed in a seven years-old-child (which presented with chronic cough as the only symptom). The chest radiographs showed left lung global condensation. We did rigid bronchoscopy to discard a bronchial foreign body and confirmed the existence of a white-yellowish colour, smooth surface mass obliterating the left main bronchus. Biopsy and anatomopathology study give the result of hamartoma. We performed thoracotomy, bronchotomy and enucleation of the mass. The frequency, clinic, diagnosis and treatment of endobronchial hamartoma are analyzed.

The nasolabial cyst is an uncommon midfacial cyst. Twenty-six patients with nasolabial cysts were treated at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary from 1969 to 1986. Most of these lesions manifested facial deformity, unilateral nasal obstruction, and pain when infected. The nasolabial cyst is often unrecognized or confused with other intranasal masses, or fissural and odontogenic cysts. Infection of these lesions--which occurred in 50% of the patients--may mimic facial cellulitis, periodontal abscess, acute maxillary sinusitis, or nasal furuncles. This cyst is considered to be a hamartoma because

The clinical, electro-encephalographic and neuroradiological findings in 2 boys with gelastic epilepsy are described. Both patients had hypothalamic masses thought to be hamartomas, and 1 had precocious puberty. These 2 cases are compared with a previously published case of gelastic epilepsy with a left temporal focus. It was not possible to differentiate the hypothalamic lesions from the left temporal lesion on clinical grounds. The laughter in the hypothalamic group did not lack affect, as described by some other authors. Interictal EEGs in the patients with hypothalamic lesions showed gener

The clinical and pathologic findings in three cases of unilateral megalencephaly, showing a spectrum of mild to severe involvement, are presented. The first case demonstrated an increase in neuronal size and mild gliosis and is contrasted with the second and third cases, which showed a progressive enlargement and bizarre appearance of neurons associated with an increase in number and size of astrocytes. The relationship of these cases to developmental and neoplastic disease in the brain is discussed.
