We evaluated the bactericidal efficacy of two modified WHO-recommended alcohol-based hand rubs (3 mL) after a 15-s rubbing period using two different rub-in techniques (three vs six steps). The formulation based on 80% w/w ethanol and 0.5% v/v glycerol (modified WHO I) showed a mean log10-reduction of 3.63 ± 0.87 (six steps) and 3.80 ± 0.71 (three steps) which was inferior to the reference treatment (4.27 ± 0.98; six steps). The efficacy of the formulation based on 75% w/w isopropanol and 0.5% v/v glycerol (modified WHO II) was not inferior to the reference treatment for either rub-in techniqu

OBJECTIVES: Guided by the human-ecological model, we aimed to identify contextual factors related to protective behaviors during the COVID-19 outbreak.
METHOD: Data are based on a nationally representative survey of adults aged 50+ in Israel during the COVID-19 outbreak (N = 1,019). Regression models predicted three behaviors: using hand sanitizers and masks, stocking up food, and avoiding social meetings. The independent variables were living arrangements (microsystems) and type of localities (macrosystems).
RESULTS: Participants who lived alone or lived in rural localities were less likely

The Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) outbreak is an unprecedented global pandemic, sparking grave public health emergencies. One of the measures to reduce COVID-19 transmissions recommended by the World Health Organization is hand hygiene, i.e., washing hands with soap and water or disinfecting them using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser (ABHS). Unfortunately, competing ABHSs with unknown quality, safety, and efficacy thrived, posing yet another risk to consumers. This study aims to develop, optimise, and validate a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)-based analytical method to simu

BACKGROUND: Estimates of the effectiveness of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions that provide high levels of service on childhood diarrhoea are scarce. We aimed to provide up-to-date estimates on the burden of disease attributable to WASH and on the effects of different types of WASH interventions on childhood diarrhoea in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs).
METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we updated previous reviews following their search strategy by searching MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and BIOSIS Citation Index for studies o

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is an animal pathogen of great concern. It is contagious to cloven-hoofed animals and affects animals in extensive areas worldwide. In general, the primary eradication strategies for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Japan are stamping out the disease and restriction of movement. It is also important to completely disinfect the infected area to prevent the spread of FMDV, including vehicles and people as well. However, there is no report on the effect of commercially available disinfectants against FMDV in a short contact time. In this study, we evaluated the

Leachate from different municipal solid waste (MSW) facilities serves as a significant reservoir and a dissemination hub for pathogenic microorganisms, which can pose significant health risks to on-site sanitation workers. In this study, a quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) framework based on Monte Carlo simulation was used to evaluate and compare the health risks for sanitation workers exposed to various pathogens in leachate. To this end, digital PCR (dPCR) was employed to measure pathogen concentrations in leachate from 33 MSW facilities across China. Results showed that the esti

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene is critical for infection prevention and quality of care. Alcohol-based hand rubs (ABHRs) are widely recommended for their broad antimicrobial activity and ease of use; however, concerns remain regarding product quality and efficacy. This study evaluated the physicochemical properties and antimicrobial performance of ABHRs used in healthcare facilities in Addis Ababa.
METHODS: A laboratory-based experimental design was conducted between May and August 2025. Thirty ABHRs from hospital-produced, locally manufactured, and imported sources were tested using a customized E

Water quality improvement, sanitation, and hygiene have been demonstrated to have positive impacts on health, social, and economic development. However, global understanding of water quality, sanitation, and hygiene is limited. The study extracted data from the Joint Monitoring Programme (WHO/UNICEF) and the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) to estimate global water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) levels. Statistical tools of univariate and multivariate analyses were used to process global access to WASH. Results show that men (53%) had access to safe water compared to women. Women (67%), o

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the most common cause of acute viral hepatitis worldwide and is mainly transmitted via the fecal-oral route or through consumption of contaminated food products. Due to the lack of efficient cell culture systems for the propagation of HEV, limited data regarding its sensitivity to chemical disinfectants are available. Consequently, preventive and evidence-based hygienic guidelines on HEV disinfection are lacking.
METHODS: We used a robust HEV genotype 3 cell culture model which enables quantification of viral infection of quasi-enveloped and naked

The incidence of hospital- and community-acquired infections has been dramatically increased worldwide. Accordingly, hands hygiene and the use of disinfectants have been increased leading to the expansion in hand sanitizers production to meet public demand. This study was conducted to assess the efficiency of common disinfectants in the market of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in inhibiting the microbial growth during the time of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Five bacterial strains of commonly hospital-acquired infections (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis,

Cholera has been eliminated as a public health problem in high-income countries that have implemented sanitation system separating the community's fecal waste from their drinking water and food supply. These expensive, highly-engineered systems, first developed in London over 150 years ago, have not reached low-income high-risk communities across Asia. Barriers to their implementation in communities at highest risk for cholera include the high capital and operating costs for this technological approach, limited capacity and perverse incentives of local governments, and a decreasing availabilit

Cholera is a severe form of acute watery diarrhea that if left untreated can result in death. Globally, there are 2.9 million cholera cases annually. Individuals living in close proximity to cholera cases are at a higher risk for developing cholera compared to the general population. Targeted water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions have the potential to reduce cholera transmission in cholera hotspots around cholera cases. The objective of this study was to expand the scope of the Cholera-Hospital-Based-Intervention-for-7-Days (CHoBI7) program, focused on cholera patient households,

BACKGROUND: Access to water and sanitation is a basic human right; however, in many parts of the world, communities experience water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) insecurity. While WaSH insecurity is prevalent in many low and middle-income countries, it is also a problem in high-income countries, like the United States, as is evident in vulnerable populations, including people experiencing homelessness. Limited knowledge exists about the coping strategies unhoused people use to access WaSH services. This study, therefore, examines WaSH access among unhoused communities in Los Angeles, Califo
