Association of diet quality with hand grip strength weakness and asymmetry in a multi-ethnic Asian cohort.

Hand grip strength (HGS) is an important diagnostic tool for sarcopenia and a reliable predictor for age-related chronic diseases and mortality. Interventions in nutrition have been shown as a low-cost strategy to maintain muscular strength and mass. However, there are limited data on the effect of diet on HGS in Southeast Asian populations. This study aims to investigate the association of diet quality with HGS weakness and asymmetry in a multi-ethnic population in Singapore. This cross-sectional study used data from the Singapore Multi-Ethnic Cohort (n = 1547). Dietary data were collected us

Hand grip strength-based cachexia index as a predictor of cancer cachexia and prognosis in patients with cancer.

BACKGROUND: The cachexia index is a useful predictor for cancer cachexia and prognostic assessment. However, its use is limited because of high testing costs and complicated testing procedures. Thus, in this study, we aimed to develop a hand grip strength (HGS)-based cancer cachexia index (H-CXI) as a potential predictor of cancer cachexia and prognosis in patients with cancer. METHODS: Here, 14 682 patients with cancer were studied, including the discovery (6592), internal validation (2820) and external validation (5270) cohorts. The H-CXI was calculated as [HGS (kg)/height (m)2  × serum alb

Normative data on the one-handed static pull strength of a Chinese population and a comparison with American data.

We assess the one-handed static pull strength of a Chinese population and compare it to that of an American sample. Fifty men and 50 women in five age groups were asked to exert their maximum one-handed pull strength in three pulling directions (across, front and side) and from four pulling heights (61 cm, 76 cm, waist height and above-shoulder height). The results showed that women had less pull strength than men under all of the conditions tested. The front and side pulling resulted in the greatest pull strength, with a decrease detected when the pulling height was increased. The American sa

Association between wrist-worn free-living accelerometry and hand grip strength in middle-aged and older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Wrist-worn activity monitors have seen widespread adoption in recent times, particularly in young and sport-oriented cohorts, while their usage among older adults has remained relatively low. The main limitations are in regards to the lack of medical insights that current mainstream activity trackers can provide to older subjects. One of the most important research areas under investigation currently is the possibility of extrapolating clinical information from these wearable devices. METHODS: The research question of this study is understanding whether accelerometry data collec
