Upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders and work exposures among railroad maintenance-of-way workers.

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to examine occupational risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders of the shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands among railroad maintenance-of-way (MOW) workers. Little systematic research on musculoskeletal disorders has been conducted in this occupational group. METHODS: In total, 3995 active members of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED) completed a standardized survey focusing on disorders caused by hand-transmitted vibration. We computed adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) using Poisson regression for shoulder, elbow, carpal tunnel sy

Hand-arm vibration in snowmobile drivers.

Hand-arm vibration was measured on the handlebars of snowmobiles (N = 29) and a postal inquiry was made among reindeer herders, N = 2,705. Since many subjects had used also other vibrating tools a snowmobile group proper (N = 334) was established, and in this group 18% of the subjects reported that they had experienced white finger attacks and 48% numbness of the hands. The age-adjusted prevalence of the white finger syndrome was more than three times higher in the snowmobile group than in the controls. The frequency-weighted acceleration of snowmobile vibration was 3.5 m/s2, and risk evaluati

Evaluating abnormal cold sensitivity among vibration-exposed workers using hand cold stress testing: A clinical cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Workers exposed to hand-arm vibration (HAV) commonly experience discomfort in their hands when cold. There is a lack of diagnostic tests for such abnormal cold sensitivity. The main aim of our study was to evaluate the results of cold stress testing in relation to self-reported cold sensitivity among HAV-exposed workers. METHODS: We recruited 225 workers exposed to HAV who responded to a written screening question about cold sensitivity. Cold stress testing was conducted, where the right hand was immersed in 3.0 °C circulating water for up to 60 seconds. The tolerance time for imme

Evaluation of human exposure to vibration in the hand-arm system during motorcycle riding activities.

BACKGROUND: The majority of Indians prefer to drive by two-wheeler. Hands are the most important interface between the rider and bike while riding a motorbike. The vibration is transferred to the physical structure by the handlebar as it travels. Long-term exposure to the vibrations may have an impact on various bodily structures. OBJECTIVE: To measure and analyse the human exposure to vibration in the hand-arm system while riding a motorcycle using a vibrometer. METHODS: The several types of bikes based on their cc's were evaluated in three different road conditions during this investigatio

Low myelinated nerve-fibre density may lead to symptoms associated with nerve entrapment in vibration-induced neuropathy.

Prolonged exposure to hand-held vibrating tools may cause a hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), sometimes with individual susceptibility. The neurological symptoms seen in HAVS are similar to symptoms seen in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and there is a strong relationship between CTS and the use of vibrating tools. Vibration exposure to the hand is known to induce demyelination of nerve fibres and to reduce the density of myelinated nerve fibres in the nerve trunks. In view of current knowledge regarding the clinical effects of low nerve-fibre density in patients with neuropathie

Hand pain other than carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS): the role of occupational factors.

Some occupational factors have been implicated in the development of disorders manifested as hand pain. The associations seem to be well documented in processes such as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) or writer's cramp. There are contradictory data in the literature about the relationships of trigger finger, De Quervain's tenosynovitis (DQT) and tenosynovitis of the wrist with occupational factors. In this article, we review current knowledge about clinical manifestations, case definition, implicated occupational factors, diagnosis and treatment of the most relevant hand pain disorders that

Palmaris brevis spasm syndrome in manual workers using vibratory tools.

Palmaris brevis spasm syndrome (PBSS) appears to reflect benign muscle hyperactivity, with unprovoked recurrent spasm of the muscle and consequent dimpling of the hypothenar eminence. Two cases are reported, being the first known report of the condition among manual workers or those using vibratory tools. Each was diagnosed during routine health surveillance for hand-arm vibration syndrome. With hand cramps being a frequent report among vibration-exposed workers, this condition should be considered in such cases, although the lack of reports means that the frequency of the condition is unknown

Health effects of mechanical vibration.

In this study, the health disorders caused by occupational exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) and hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) are reviewed. Long-term occupational exposure to intense WBV is associated with an increased risk for disorders of the lumbar spine and the connected nervous system. With a lower probability, the neck-shoulder, the gastrointestinal system, the female reproductive organs, the peripheral veins, and the cochleo-vestibular system are also assumed to be affected by WBV. However, there is a weak epidemiologic support for WBV-induced disorders of organ systems other t

[Accident-related and workplace-related vascular disorders of the hand].

BACKGROUND: Limited hand function as the result of occupational exposure or accidental injury could primarily be of vascular origin. Since it is quite rarely seen in the course of routine traumatology, special awareness of this is needed. AIM OF THE PAPER: The occupational diseases hypothenar/thenar hammer syndrome (occupational disease 2114) and vibration-induced vasospastic syndrome (occupational disease 2104) are presented on the basis of their etiological and pathogenetic characteristics, taking aspects of occupational medicine and expert opinion into consideration. Contribution of vibration to musculoskeletal disorders in New Zealand.

The aim of this study was to remind Australasian doctors about the importance of vibration as an occupational exposure capable of causing musculoskeletal disease. This is a common problem in the northern hemisphere, but only four reports have been found in Australasian published work. Nine cases are reported together with a summary of vibration disorders and their nomenclature. Of the nine cases reviewed, six arose from compensation disputes and two resulted in Department of Labour prosecutions. Three patients had hand symptoms arising from using vibrating concrete drills, two patients used he

Vibration and impulsivity analysis of hand held olive beaters.

To provide more effective evaluations of hand arm vibration syndromes caused by hand held olive beaters, this study focused on two aspects: the acceleration measured at the tool pole and the analysis of the impulsivity, using the crest factor. The signals were frequency weighted using the weighting curve Wh as described in the ISO 5349-1 standard. The same source signals were also filtered by the Wh-bl filter (ISO/TS 15694), because the weighting filter Wh (unlike the Wh-bl filter) could underestimate the effect of high frequency vibration on vibration-induced finger disorders. A roadmap for assessing the diagnostic usefulness of neurosensory testing and an updated method for exposure assessment among vibration-exposed workers in northern Sweden.

Workers who use handheld vibrating machines such as grinders, hammers and chainsaws expose themselves to hand-arm vibration (HAV). Exposure to HAV may cause injuries to both the neurological and the vascular system. The occupational health services (OHS) in Sweden use a formal guideline for secondary prevention focusing on early detection of vibration-related injuries. The guide includes several screening tools, such as a screening questionnaire, clinical examinations, and laboratory tests. There are no studies, to our knowledge, on the diagnostic value of the separate items on symptoms in the
