Self-care strategies used for acute attack of interstitial cystitis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the kinds of self-care used by women with interstitial cystitis and to find effective ways to manage symptoms of acute attack. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred thirty-eight women with interstitial cystitis completed a survey indicating how often they used and how effective they found strategies in four physical self-care subdomains (medication, treatment, diet, and body comfort) and three psychologic self-care subdomains (cognitive/stress reduction, distraction, and help-seeking). RESULTS: Descriptions of symptoms during an "acute attack" are more consistent with symptoms de

Perioperative Cannabis Use in Bariatric Patients: A Review of Outcomes and Proposed Clinical Pathway for Management.

Legalization of marijuana has led to increased prevalence of medical and recreational cannabis use, underscoring the importance for anesthesiologists, surgeons, and perioperative physicians to understand the effects of this drug in patient care. Bariatric surgical patients represent a unique target population to understand peri-operative cannabis use and its effects as these patients undergo an extensive preoperative psychological and nutritional evaluation. Standardized guidelines on cannabis use in bariatric surgery are lacking and many clinicians remain uncertain on how to handle cannabis u

[Design and implementation of virtual reality software with psychological treatment for drug-dependent patients].

High relapse rate of drug-dependent patients is a serious problem in the current situation. The present article describes how to design and implement virtual reality technology for drug-dependent patients with psychological treatment, with the aim at the addiction withdrawal. The software was developed based on open-source game engine for 2D models. The form of a game simulates the actual style in the day-to-day living environment of drug-dependent patients and the temptation of using drugs. The software helps the patients deal with different scenarios and different event handling, cause their

Malpractice lawsuit cases due to temporomandibular joint/soft tissue injuries following dental therapy are increasing. Therefore, dentists and their staffs must know how to recognize, document and avoid any possible aggravation or precipitation of TMJ disorder. TMJ anatomy, biomechanics and mechanisms of TMJ injuries are presented. Etiological factors such as psychological factors, parafunctional activities, malocclusion, trauma, iatrogenic causes, systemic conditions, developmental disorders, neoplastic growth or medications are discussed. Preventive measures addressed include: history-taking

Missing outcome data in randomised clinical trials of psychological interventions: a review of published trial reports in major psychiatry journals.

BACKGROUND: Missing outcome data can pose a serious threat to the validity of randomised clinical trial results. We aimed to study the extent of missing outcome data in randomised clinical trials of psychological interventions. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of randomised clinical trial reports of psychological interventions published in World Psychiatry, JAMA Psychiatry, Lancet Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, British Journal of Psychiatry, or Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics from 2017 to 2022. We assessed the proportion of missing outcome data, whether missing data p

Visual consciousness explained by its impairments.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The scientific study of the visual consciousness has been marked by significant recent achievements, resulting from an interaction between the exploration of cognition in both brain-damaged patients and healthy individuals. Several neuropsychological syndromes contain marked dissociations which permit the identification of principles related to the neurophysiology of consciousness. The generality of these principles can then be evaluated in healthy individuals using a combination of experimental psychology paradigms, and functional brain-imaging tools. RECENT FINDINGS: In t

Predictors of low back pain in nursing home workers after implementation of a safe resident handling programme.

OBJECTIVES: Healthcare workers have high rates of low back pain (LBP) related to handling patients. A large chain of nursing homes experienced reduced biomechanical load, compensation claims and costs following implementation of a safe resident handling programme (SRHP). The aim of this study was to examine whether LBP similarly declined and whether it was associated with relevant self-reported occupational exposures or personal health factors. METHODS: Worker surveys were conducted on multiple occasions beginning with the week of first SRHP introduction (baseline). In each survey, the outcom

Effect of Multivoice Chorus on Interpersonal Communication Disorder.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

OBJECTIVE: As a type of music therapy, multipart chorus does not have high requirements for participants, and the basic level can be high or low. For college students, it is more likely to participate. Exploring the effect of multivoice chorus intervention on college students' mental health can provide reference for school psychological correction work. This study uses multivoice chorus as a means, combined with certain group psychological counseling techniques, to try to explore a new model for improving the mental health of college students. METHOD: Fifty college students in prison were sel

Psychological, surgical, and sociodemographic predictors of pain outcomes after breast cancer surgery: a population-based cohort study.

Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) is a common postoperative adverse event affecting up to half of women undergoing breast cancer surgery, yet few epidemiological studies have prospectively investigated the role of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative risk factors for pain onset and chronicity. We prospectively investigated preoperative sociodemographic and psychological factors, intraoperative clinical factors, and acute postoperative pain in a prospective cohort of 362 women undergoing surgery for primary breast cancer. Intraoperative nerve handling (division or preservation) of the

Anxiety-like behaviour assessments of adolescent rats after repeated maternal separation during early life.

Maternal separation (MS) plays a central role in developing physiology and psychology during the individual ontogeny process. MS is used to research the neurobiological mechanisms of mental disorders and early life stress. In this study, we investigated the effects of repeated MS and early handling (EH) on locomotor activity in an open-field test, a light-dark box test and an elevated plus-maze test of adolescent rats. The results showed that MS reduced locomotor activities in the open-field test, and increased anxiety-like behaviours in the light-dark box test and the elevated plus-maze test

Stress-induced core temperature changes in pigeons (Columba livia).

Changes in body temperature are significant physiological consequences of stressful stimuli in mammals and birds. Pigeons (Columba livia) prosper in (potentially) stressful urban environments and are common subjects in neurobehavioral studies; however, the thermal responses to stress stimuli by pigeons are poorly known. Here, we describe acute changes in the telemetrically recorded celomatic (core) temperature (Tc) in pigeons given a variety of potentially stressful stimuli, including transfer to a novel cage (ExC) leading to visual isolation from conspecifics, the presence of the experimenter

The influence of challenging objects and horse-rider matching on heart rate, heart rate variability and behavioural score in riding horses.

A good horse-rider 'match' is important in the context of equine welfare. To quantify the influence of repetition and horse-rider matching on the stress of horses encountering challenging objects, 16 Warmblood horses were ridden in a test-setting on three occasions. On each occasion the horse was ridden by a different rider and was challenged by three objects (A-C). Heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV) of horse and rider, and behaviour score (BS) of the horse were obtained for each object and as a total for each test. The horse-rider interaction was evaluated with each combination and

Management of Patients With AIDS and Retroperitoneal Calcified Fibrosis During the Perioperative Period: A Case Report.

This case report details the perioperative management of a 27-year-old male patient with AIDS and a rare giant retroperitoneal calcifying fibrous tumor. The tumor's surgical removal posed high risk due to its proximity to vital structures and the patient's human immunodeficiency virus infection. The report highlights the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in managing such complex cases. Key nursing considerations included providing psychological support to mitigate the stigma associated with AIDS, adhering strictly to infection control and disinfection protocols, closely monitoring

Burnout and effort-reward imbalance improvement for teachers by a manual-based group program.

OBJECTIVE: We developed a manual-based psychological group program aimed at teachers and focussing on their professional relationships. The intervention comprised ten sessions over a 10-month period. The aim of the program was to strengthen teachers' health. We investigated whether the effects of our intervention, during which the MBI and ERI were applied, result in general alleviation of occupational stress experienced by teachers. METHODS: This is a randomized controlled trial. All teachers (N = 2,484) of two school types (grammar schools and secondary modern schools) in 3 districts of sout

Cerebral blood flow imaging in paediatrics: a review.

The ability to study regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) is available in many institutions, especially with the spread of multi-headed gamma cameras. The use of this technique in paediatrics requires special attention to detail in the manner of data acquisition and handling the child. The interpretation of the rCBF study in a child requires knowledge of normal brain maturation. The major clinical use in paediatrics is epilepsy because of the advances in surgery and the frequency of complex partial seizures. Other indications in paediatric neurology include brain death, acute neurological loss

Case Report: A Functional Approach to Deal With Sexual Harassment Within Families.

Abuse is followed by multiple short- and long-term psychological consequences. Researchers suggest a significant need to design a culturally relevant and competent treatment plan specifically for the Asian context. This research presents an account of therapeutic strategies that were employed to manage the complaints of sexual harassment and associated psychological challenges. This case report dealt with a 16-year-old girl who was self-referred to the psychologist with complaints of getting sexually harassed by her brother-in-law, difficulty in managing academic challenges, communication gap

The dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in diet-induced prediabetic male Sprague Dawley rats.

BACKGROUND: Altered function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in type 2 diabetic patients, a condition preceded by pre-diabetes, has been shown to increase the risk of depression as well as cause downstream effects resulting in upregulation of gluconeogenesis and dyslipidemia. In addition, stress, either psychological from managing diabetes or lifestyle related, further activates the HPA axis causing an exaggerated stress response. This study investigated the activity of the HPA axis in selected markers of glucose handling, and the stress response relative to components of the
