Investigating Visual Perception Impairments through Serious Games and Eye Tracking to Anticipate Handwriting Difficulties.

Dysgraphia is a learning disability that causes handwritten production below expectations. Its diagnosis is delayed until the completion of handwriting development. To allow a preventive training program, abilities not directly related to handwriting should be evaluated, and one of them is visual perception. To investigate the role of visual perception in handwriting skills, we gamified standard clinical visual perception tests to be played while wearing an eye tracker at three difficulty levels. Then, we identified children at risk of dysgraphia through the means of a handwriting speed test.

The influence of script type on handwriting in children with dyslexia: a comparison across Cyrillic and Latin scripts.

The present study investigated whether script type (Latin vs. Cyrillic) differentially influences the temporal characteristics of handwriting in children with dyslexia, chronological age-matched controls (CA), and spelling-level matched controls (SL). Four tasks varying in cognitive and linguistic demands were administered: name and surname writing, an alphabet task, a dictation task including real words, pseudowords, and nonwords, and a text composition task. Temporal handwriting measures were obtained using Eye and Pen software. Writing in Cyrillic generally required longer total task durati

Functional properties of the handwriting brain network: Effects of motor sequence and spatial adaptation constraints.

Writing by hand involves a sequential component, characterized by the succession of strokes to form letters, and a motor adaptation component for controlling pen movements under spatial constraints. The topography of the brain network supporting handwriting is well established, but the functional properties of its components in the motor control of handwriting as a procedural skill remain poorly understood. To address this question, we recorded the brain activity of adult participants as they wrote in the MRI scanner. We manipulated the sequential component of handwriting, e.g., the succession

Handwriting legibility and fluency and their patterns of concurrent relations with spelling, graphomotor, and selective attention skills.

Recent research suggests that handwriting comprises two separate subskills: legibility and fluency. It remains unclear, however, how these subskills differ in their relationship to other abilities associated with handwriting, including spelling, graphomotor, and selective attention skills. In this study, we sought to examine the extent and nature of concurrent relationships that may exist among these skills. Children in Year 3 (n = 293), Year 4 (n = 291), and Year 5 (n = 283) completed a large, group-administered battery to assess each of the above skills. Using multigroup structural equation

A Tablet-Based App to Discriminate Children at Potential Risk of Handwriting Alterations in a Preliteracy Stage.

Failing to master handwriting, as in the case of Dysgraphia, has negative consequences on children's lives. In early stage of development, Dysgraphia diagnosis is delayed and not easily achievable. Thus, the aim of this work is to propose a valid tool to anticipate Dysgraphia screening at a preliteracy age. We developed a tablet application to analyze characteristics altered in dysgraphic handwriting, such as rhythmical laws (isochrony and homothety), or a collection of kinematic and dynamic parameters (smoothness, pressure, frequency contents). To be suitable for the pre-literacy stage, possi

Quantitative analysis of the correlation between body posture quality assessment scores and handwriting quality measures.

Various technological applications for body posture correction have been proposed in order to improve handwriting or facilitate its learning for children, under the assumption that a better posture promotes better handwriting. However, very little research investigates the correlation between body posture quality and handwriting quality. Moreover, investigating this correlation typically necessitates the expertise of human observers, leading to high costs, slow progress, and potential subjectivity issues. Consequently, this method may not be suitable for educational environments that require p

Phenotyping features in the genesis of pre-scriptural gestures in children to assess handwriting developmental levels.

Acquiring writing skills is a long developmental process that is conditioned by both the mastery of the gesture and the spatio-temporal arrangement of characters across the page. While the researches in the literature mainly focused on spatio-temporal and kinematics parameters of tracing letters or words using digitizing tablets, no recent research has previously studied the developmental prerequisites of the organization of handwriting useful for clinical assessment and remediation. Aims of the present study was to investigate and validate the phenotyping of the developmental genesis of pre-s

Intelligent Sensory Pen for Aiding in the Diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease from Dynamic Handwriting Analysis.

In this paper, we propose a pen device capable of detecting specific features from dynamic handwriting tests for aiding on automatic Parkinson's disease identification. The method used in this work uses machine learning to compare the raw signals from different sensors in the device coupled to a pen and extract relevant information such as tremors and hand acceleration to diagnose the patient clinically. Additionally, the datasets composed of raw signals from healthy and Parkinson's disease patients acquired here are made available to further contribute to research related to this topic.

Validation of the Chinese Handwriting Analysis System (CHAS) for primary school students in Hong Kong.

There are more children diagnosed with specific learning difficulties in recent years as people are more aware of these conditions. Diagnostic tool has been validated to screen out this condition from the population (SpLD test for Hong Kong children). However, for specific assessment on handwriting problem, there seems a lack of standardized and objective evaluation tool to look into the problems. The objective of this study was to validate the Chinese Handwriting Analysis System (CHAS), which is designed to measure both the process and production of handwriting. The construct validity, conver

Handwriting as a gauge of cognitive status: a novel forensic tool for posthumous evaluation of testamentary capacity.

OBJECTIVE: To provide an objective way to analyze handwriting, and to test its reliability and correlation with mental deterioration. Handwriting may give clues to the cognitive status of the writer, thus its analysis might be helpful, for example, in the forensic evaluation of a controversial handwritten last will. DESIGN: We devised a semiquantitative score system taking into account verbal and lexical skills and spatial orientation. We investigated its inter-rater reliability and its correlation with validated tests of neuropsychological status, such the Milan Overall Dementia Assessment (

Frontal cortical activity during dominant and non-dominant handwriting in healthy adults: an fNIRS study.

Handwriting integrates linguistic and motor processes and is a complex neuropsychological function. We investigated whether frontal cortical activity during written object naming differs between dominant- and non-dominant-hand writing. Sixteen healthy right-handed adults performed written-naming and circle-drawing motor-control tasks with the dominant right and non-dominant left hands while measuring bilateral frontal cortical hemodynamic responses using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Writing-related activity was defined as the difference in oxygenated hemoglobin responses between writ
