A haptics-assisted cranio-maxillofacial surgery planning system for restoring skeletal anatomy in complex trauma cases.

PURPOSE: Cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) surgery to restore normal skeletal anatomy in patients with serious trauma to the face can be both complex and time-consuming. But it is generally accepted that careful pre-operative planning leads to a better outcome with a higher degree of function and reduced morbidity in addition to reduced time in the operating room. However, today's surgery planning systems are primitive, relying mostly on the user's ability to plan complex tasks with a two-dimensional graphical interface. METHODS: A system for planning the restoration of skeletal anatomy in facial tr

Strain-Insensitive Heater on Wrinkled Surface Integrated with Carbon Nanotube Bundles for Wearable Thermal Therapy and Multimodal Tactile Displays.

Flexible or stretchable heaters can generate heat despite their deformation, making them suitable for various applications such as wearable devices and human-machine interfaces. This study presents the development and characterization of a highly stretchable heater integrating vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) on a wrinkled elastomer substrate designed to maintain consistent heating performance under mechanical strain. Through a synergistic design considering both material and mechanical structure, the strain-insensitive heater achieves minimal temperature variation (less than 5%) a

A VR obstetric simulator based on the Novint Falcon haptic device: development and evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Digital vaginal examination is the technique that midwives use to assess the stage of labour, but its learning process is based on theory, mannequins and mostly practice with pregnant women, which often discomforts those women and does not assure learning all kinds of situations that midwives can face. Virtual reality can greatly help in learning this technique, but current virtual medical simulators are based on consumer headsets and controllers that do not provide the required haptic feedback. OBJECTIVE: To develop a realistic, but also affordable, virtual reality obstetric simu

EEG-Based Validation of Neural Response Similarity Between Vibration and Electrical Stimulation for Virtual Tactile Feedback.

Electrical stimulation virtual vibration is widely used in fields like virtual reality and medical rehabilitation. However, its parameter optimization still relies on subjective psychological evaluation. This approach lacks objective quantitative criteria. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the neural response relationship between low-frequency vibration stimulation and electrical stimulation using EEG technology, providing quantitative theoretical support for optimizing electrical stimulation parameters. This paper employs a custom-built electrical stimulation system (incorporating a

Implementing social and affective touch to enhance user experience in human-robot interaction.

In this paper, we discuss the potential contribution of affective touch to the user experience and robot performance in human-robot interaction, with an in-depth look into upper-limb prosthesis use as a well-suited example. Research on providing haptic feedback in human-robot interaction has worked to relay discriminative information during functional activities of daily living, like grasping a cup of tea. However, this approach neglects to recognize the affective information our bodies give and receive during social activities of daily living, like shaking hands. The discussion covers the emo

Vehicle-Embedded Vibrotactile Haptic Feedback for Improved Driving Safety in Power Wheelchairs.

Power wheelchair users often face challenges in safe navigation, especially when reversing or operating with limited visual scanning. Existing feedback systems, including joystick force feedback and wearable vibrotactile devices, suffer from low information fidelity and usability issues. This research presents a novel vehicle-embedded vibrotactile haptic feedback system integrated into the cushion, armrests, and backrest, employing ultrasonic and infrared sensors to detect obstacles and deliver spatially mapped vibration cues. Two research questions are addressed: (Q1) whether embedded haptic

Partial Arm Weight Support Does Not Hamper the Weight Perception of Haptically-Rendered Virtual Objects: A Psychophysics Study.

Arm weight support (AWS) from upper-limb exoskeletons aids training by reducing fatigue and increasing the movement workspace, especially in people with acquired brain injury (ABI). Simultaneously, task-specific training could be enabled via haptic rendering, simulating the interaction forces with tangible virtual objects. However, how AWS affects somatosensory perception, such as the perception of the weight of haptically rendered virtual objects, is unclear. We therefore conducted a psychophysics experiment with 40 participants investigating the effect of partial AWS on virtual object weight

Shared-Control HMI for Tactile-First Traversal Offline Counterfactual Evaluation with Haptic Safety Projection.

Supervising tactile-first robotic traversal in confined, uncertain spaces poses a challenge: operators must be able to intervene without continuous micromanagement. We present a human-machine interface (HMI) that blends operator commands with safety-constrained autonomy and surfaces risk through synthesized predictive haptic alerts. Using offline, log-driven replay of 660 trials, we counterfactually evaluate this HMI without new user studies. Results show consistent improvements: predicted collisions decrease, minimum clearance increases, traversal time and path length improve, and the travers

Virtual reality-based training for the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Prostate malignancies are the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men. The most common method of detecting this disease is digital rectal examination (DRE). Current DRE training is inadequate, since the number of patients that students can practice on is limited. Furthermore, allied care personnel do not train in screening for prostate cancer. Finally, there is no objective way to follow the improvement in DRE skills for medical personnel. This paper presents a virtual reality-based simulator that addresses the above problems. The prototype consists of a PHANToM haptic interface which

Robotics and virtual reality: a perfect marriage for motor control research and rehabilitation.

This article's goal is to outline the motivations, progress, and future objectives for the development of a state-of-the-art device that allows humans to visualize and feel synthetic objects superimposed on the physical world. The programming flexibility of these devices allows for a variety of scientific questions to be answered in psychology, neurophysiology, rehabilitation, haptics, and automatic control. The benefits are most probable in rehabilitation of brain-injured patients, for whom the costs are high, therapist time is limited, and repetitive practice of movements has been shown to b

Effects of Uni- and Bi-Directional Interaction During Dyadic Ankle and Wrist Tracking.

Haptic human-robot-human interaction allows users to feel and respond to one another's forces while interfacing with separate robotic devices, providing customizable infrastructure for studying physical interaction during motor tasks (e.g., physical rehabilitation). For upper- and lower-limb tracking tasks, previous work has shown that virtual interactions with a partner can improve motor performance depending on the skill level of each partner. However, whether the mechanism explaining these improvements is identical in the upper and lower limbs is an open question. In this work, we investiga

FUN AND GAMES: DESIGNING A GAMIFIED CENTRAL VENOUS CATHETERIZATION TRAINING SIMULATOR.

Gamification, or adding elements of games to training systems, has the potential to increase learner engagement and information retention. However, the use of gamification has yet to be explored in Central Venous Catheterization (CVC) trainers which teach a commonly performed medical procedure with high incidence rates. In order to combat these errors, a Dynamic Haptic Robotic Trainer (DHRT) was developed, which focuses on vessel identification and access. A DHRT+ system is currently under development that focuses on whole procedure training (e.g. sterilization and catheter insertion), includi

Electroencephalography Validation of Object Stiffness Discrimination via Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation for Prosthetic Sensory Feedback.

Currently, the surface electromyography has gained prominence in human-machine interface systems for prosthetic hand control. However, the absence of tactile feedback often affects their acceptability. To address this problem, this study proposes a closed-loop human-machine interaction system that employs transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation to reconstruct the hand-brain sensorimotor pathway. Dual-channel surface electromyography signals were synchronously captured from antagonistic muscle groups (flexors/extensors) and processed to generate control commands for the prosthetic hand. Thi

"Can You Feel It": An Early Experience with Simulated Vibration to Recreate Glenoid Reaming.

UNLABELLED: When developing educational simulators, meaningful haptic feedback is important. To our knowledge, no shoulder arthroplasty surgical simulator exists. This study focuses on simulating vibration haptics of glenoid reaming for shoulder arthroplasty using a novel glenoid reaming simulator. METHODS: We validated a novel custom simulator constructed using a vibration transducer transmitting simulated reaming vibrations to a powered nonwearing reamer tip through a 3D-printed glenoid. Validation and system fidelity were evaluated by 9 fellowship-trained shoulder surgeon experts performin

Enhancing motor imagery detection efficacy using multisensory virtual reality priming.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) have been developed to allow users to communicate with the external world by translating brain activity into control signals. Motor imagery (MI) has been a popular paradigm in BCI control where the user imagines movements of e.g., their left and right limbs and classifiers are then trained to detect such intent directly from electroencephalography (EEG) signals. For some users, however, it is difficult to elicit patterns in the EEG signal that can be detected with existing features and classifiers. As such, new user control strategies and training paradigms have

Impact of Sensory Haptic Vibrotactile Feedback on Manual Dexterity in Augmented Reality.

The use of immersive environments is increasing, especially in rehabilitation and other areas, like sports and gaming. Tasks performed in virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) often have poorer motor performance, in part due to reduced tactile and proprioceptive inputs. We investigated whether vibrotactile haptic feedback could enhance motor performance within AR. We used the Box and Block Test (BBT) to investigate manual dexterity, where participants moved cubes over a partition using one hand. Participants performed the task in 8 conditions: Real, AR without feedback, and AR with haptic wristban

Leveraging wearable haptics for guidance in virtual rehabilitation: effects on motor control from an immersive VR setting.

Immersive Virtual Reality (iVR) interventions have emerged as effective complements to conventional rehabilitation, with advantages in terms of flexible parametrization, extended data recording and patient engagement. Home-rehabilitation is another impactful, yet unexplored potential. A key requirement is ensuring that patients execute tasks with proper motor coordination and postural awareness: to this end, tactile sensory feedback can be introduced to enhance both immersion and motor guidance. We investigate here the efficacy and the effects on motor coordination of tactile guidance provided

Informing drivers via wearable devices: Impacts of tactile warning locations on takeover performance in automated driving.

Drivers' takeover performance is critical to the safety of Level 3 automated driving, making the design of takeover requests (TORs) a central topic in recent ergonomic research. This study proposed a novel approach to delivering tactile TORs through wearable devices. A driving simulator experiment involving 36 participants was conducted to examine how the location of tactile warnings-ear, wrist, abdomen, and tibia-affects takeover performance and user acceptance under various non-driving-related task (NDRT) conditions. Results showed that ear-based warnings elicited the shortest reaction times
