First and only manifestation of Hashimoto's disease: pericardial tamponade.

Pericardial effusion in hypothyroidism is a common finding, but an effusion which causes cardiac tamponade is a rarity. A 39-year-old man without previous medical history presented with progressive shortness of breath. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed massive pericardial effusion with tamponade findings. Thyroid function analysis showed raised thyroid-stimulating hormone associated with a severe decrease of free thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Antithyroglobulin and antithyroperoxidase antibodies were significantly high. The echocardiography-guided pericardiocentesis was followed by thyr

Markers of potential coeliac disease in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

OBJECTIVE: Coeliac disease (CD) is associated with autoimmune thyroid disease. Gluten sensitivity represents a spectrum, with at one end cases with severe gluten-dependent enteropathy, and at the other subjects with minor signs of deranged mucosal immune response. The aim of this paper was to look for signs of minor small bowel injury and immunohistochemical markers of gluten sensitivity in a group of patients with Hashimoto's disease. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Fourteen patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis without serological evidence of CD underwent immunohistochemical analysis of jejunal biops

Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease associated with retroperitoneal fibrosis.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is a rare disease of uncertain pathogenesis. However, its possible association with several immunopathologic conditions, the possibility of systemic involvement by the fibrous process, the presence of various autoantibodies, and the frequent response to immunosuppressive treatment all support an autoimmune pathogenesis. Riedel's thyroiditis is a rare disease the pathogenesis of which is also thought to be immune-mediated based on its optimal response to steroids; Riedel's thyroiditis is also frequently reported in association with retroperitoneal fibrosis. We describe

Macrophage-lymphocyte interaction in Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

The formation of macrophage-lymphocyte rosettes was studied in lymphocyte cultures from patients with Graves' disease; Hashimoto's thyroiditis, other thyroid diseases and control subjects; the cultures were incubated with normal human thyroid and other non-specific antigens. At the end of incubation, the cell pellets were smeared on slides, stained with Wright's stain and the number of rosettes determined under the microscope. The membrane immunofluorescence technique was employed to identify whether the surrounding lymphocytes were T- or B-lymphocytes. In Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyro

Hashimoto's thyroiditis and its relationship to other thyroid diseases.

The experience of the Medical University of South Carolina with Hashimoto's thyroiditis revealed an 8.3 per cent incidence of carcinoma. The most common type of carcinoma was an associated lymphoma. There was an additional 8.3 per cent incidence of a benign adenoma. Needle biopsy as a mechanism for diagnosing Hashimoto's disease, we believe, is inaccurate. A larger aliquot of tissue should be removed for the pathologist if there is a suspicion of an associated tumor. An open biopsy permits the pathologist to make an accurate diagnosis with a minimal amount of morbidity.

Immune complex deposits in Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

The thyroid glands of four patients with Graves' disease and five patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis were investigated to demonstrate in vivo immune complex deposition. By electron microscopy, electron-dense deposits were observed in the follicular basal lamina--basement membrane--(FBL) often associated with lymphocytic and plasma cell infiltration. A positive correlation was obtained with all cases by immunofluorescent studies using anti-IgG, IgA, IgM, C3 and antithyroglobulin conjugated serums. The staining was of a granular pattern and coincided to the FBL region. No discrepancies were n

The influence of identity-oriented psychotrauma therapy on Hashimoto disease activity: a randomised controlled trial.

ABSTRACTBackground: Childhood adversity and trauma have been linked to altered thyroid function and hypothyroidism, yet few randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have examined the effectiveness of trauma-focused psychological interventions in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT).Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Identity-Oriented Psychotrauma Therapy (IOPT) in adults with HT, focusing on both immunological and psychological outcomes.Method: This parallel-group RCT randomised 70 adults with HT (93.94% women; age 25-57) to receive treatment as usual (TAU) or TAU pl

The role of diffusion weighted MR imaging for differentiation between Graves' disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis.

OBJECTIVE: Vascular risk factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of vascular dementia, as well as in Alzheimer disease. The effect of antihypertensive medication on risk of dementia is unclear. The aim was to investigate the association between antihypertensive prescriptions and incident dementia, using a primary care database. METHODS: The analysis was based on 575 general and internal practices in Germany (10/2003 - 09/2008) (Disease analyzer database). Antihypertensive medication (ATC codes) during 3 years before newly diagnosed dementia (ICD codes or specific medication) in 1,2

Congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis (Hashimoto-Pritzker disease): ten-year experience at Dallas Children's Medical Center.

The real incidence of congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis (CSHR) may be underreported because of its high rate of spontaneous resolution and lack of clinical recognition. Currently, there are no criteria other than clinical that can reliably distinguish CSHR from cutaneous involvement by disseminated Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). In this study we investigate the role of E-cadherin, Ki-67, and phosphorylated histone H3 (PHH3) immunohistochemical stains in distinguishing CSHR from disseminated LCH. We found that no significant difference was seen in the histologic features and t

Bidirectional Mendelian randomization analysis of the causal relationship between inflammatory bowel disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis.

This study aimed to explore the bidirectional causal relationship between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. While both conditions are characterized by persistent inflammation and immune dysregulation, the direction of causality remains unclear. We performed a 2-sample bidirectional MR analysis using summary statistics from genome-wide association studies for IBD and HT. Genetic variants strongly associated with IBD and HT were selected as instrumental variables for forward and reverse MR analyses, respectively. Various

IgG4-positive plasma cells in Hashimoto thyroiditis: IgG4-related disease or inflammation-related IgG4-positivity?

Despite the interest of researchers in IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD), many questions still remain unanswered regarding the thyroid gland. We aimed to clarify the relationship between IgG4-positive plasma cells and the histopathological pattern in the Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) in a Finnish series. HT specimens (n = 280) were retrieved from the Department of Pathology, Fimlab Laboratories. After re-evaluation, 82 (29%) cases (72 females and 10 males, 52 ± 17 years) with significant fibrosis were selected. CD38, IgG and IgG4 positivity in plasma cells was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Adju

Identification of a Hashimoto thyroiditis susceptibility locus via a genome-wide comparison with Graves' disease.

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) and Graves' disease (GD) share some immunological features. Determining the genetic basis that distinguishes HT from GD is key for a better understanding of the differences between these two related diseases. AIM: The aim of this study was to identify a non-HLA susceptibility locus that is specific to either HT or GD. DESIGN: We performed a two-stage genome-wide comparison between HT and GD in Japan. During the discovery stage, we performed a logistic regression analysis adjusting for sex using 727 413 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for 265 HT a

[Hashimoto disease and hypothyroidism in child-bearing period--essential problem for woman and her child].

Hashimoto disease is the most frequent cause of women's hypothyroidism in the reproductive period. It can, both directly and indirectly, influence the fertility, pregnancy, and fetus development. Nevertheless congenital hypothyroidism is very occasionally the consequence of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. The neonatal hypothyroidism screening makes the early thyroxin treatment possible and prevents the development of complications from central nervous system. The authors showed main problems of Hashimoto disease in women during pregnancy as well as pregestational and postgestational period. Th

[The development of Graves' disease after long-term hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's disease].

The main autoimmune thyroid diseases are Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and Graves' disease (GD). Despite the significant differences in a pathogenesis and a clinical picture between HT and GD, the literature describes the cases of the conversion of one autoimmune disease to another, which, according to one version, is associated with a change in the balance between the levels of a stimulating and blocking antibodies to the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor. At the same time, there are more frequent observations of the transition of GD to HT, and much less often describe, on the contrary, the
