Mixing incompatibilities and toxic exposures.

A number of consumer and commercial products may react, upon inappropriate mixing, to produce substances of greater toxicity than the starting materials. Consumer product mixing incompatibilities have been well documented and warning labels appear on high-risk products. In industry, a wider array of potential mixing incompatibilities exists and includes potential accidents in chemical storage and hazardous material handling. Emergency response personnel are a group who often deal with inadvertent mixing related to transportation and other hazardous materials incidents. This article assembles s

Modern concepts of treatment and prevention of chemical injuries.

Chemical injuries are commonly encountered following exposure to acids and alkali, including hydrofluoric acid, formic acid, anhydrous ammonia, cement, and phenol. Other specific agents that cause chemical burns include white phosphorus, elemental metals, nitrates, hydrocarbons, and tar. Even though there are more than 65,000 chemicals available on the market, and an estimated 60,000 new chemicals produced each year, the potential deleterious effects of these chemicals on humans are still unknown. The Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act contains extensive provisions for emergency plan

A vision for safer food contact materials: Public health concerns as drivers for improved testing.

Food contact materials (FCMs) and food contact articles are ubiquitous in today's globalized food system. Chemicals migrate from FCMs into foodstuffs, so called food contact chemicals (FCCs), but current regulatory requirements do not sufficiently protect public health from hazardous FCCs because only individual substances used to make FCMs are tested and mostly only for genotoxicity while endocrine disruption and other hazard properties are disregarded. Indeed, FCMs are a known source of a wide range of hazardous chemicals, and they likely contribute to highly prevalent non-communicable disea

Perceived stress and substance use in methadone-maintained smokers.

BACKGROUND: In methadone maintenance treatment programs (MMTPs), 80-90% of participants smoke cigarettes. Patients in MMTPs are at particular risk for life stress, and nicotine, as well as other substances like alcohol, benzodiazepines, cocaine, marijuana, and opiates have been shown to reduce the effects of stress. Use of these addictive substances to cope with stress may precipitate illicit opiate relapse in MMTP patients. In the current study, we examined the relationship between perceived stress and substance abuse. METHODS: Participants were 315 cigarette smokers recruited from nine MMTP

Immobilization of multiple hazardous metals in fly ash waste by enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation.

The global generation of fly ash waste is projected to increase, with substantial quantities ultimately disposed of in landfills. However, due to the abundant hazardous metals in fly ash, the recycling necessitates a "green" and effective treatment to immobilize hazardous metals and avoid leaching. Enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) has been demonstrated to be effective in treating soil contaminated with hazardous metals. However, limited research focused on the interaction between EICP and fly ash, as well as the migration of hazardous metals, which will be beneficial in guiding EI

Development of a priority list of chemical mixtures occurring at 1188 hazardous waste sites, using the HazDat database.

Under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA or Superfund) section 104 mandate, as amended by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) of 1986 USC 9604 (i)(2), the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is to identify individual substances and combinations of substances that pose the greatest public health hazard at hazardous waste sites. This has led to certain mandated activities of the Agency, including development of toxicological profiles, identification of data gaps, and, ultimately, establishment of a re

Non-targeted identification and risk assessment of unknown substances in disposable plastic tableware by GC-Orbitrap HRMS.

Disposable plastic tableware was widely used and it was particularly important to identify potential hazardous substances in it and evaluate the risk to humans health. In this study, 85 substances were identified in 60 samples (22 bowls, 20 sporks, and 18 straws) by methanol extraction and non-targeted analysis using GC-Orbitrap HRMS. Subsequently, 14 high-risk substances were further screened and their migration in the samples was measured in three food simulants. Finally, based on the proposed safety limit assessment scheme for EU- authorized and unauthorized substances, the risk assessment

The Stubborn Persistence of Toxic Solvents in Chemical Synthesis.

Solvents dominate the environmental footprint of chemical synthesis, yet their selection remains governed by precedent rather than sustainability. Here, we analyse 1.3 million classified reactions from 40 years of patent data, distinguishing for the first time between reaction, workup, purification, and analytical solvents. Despite decades of awareness of solvent hazards and the publication of influential solvent selection guides, we find no net reduction in the proportion of hazardous solvents used as reaction media. Dichloromethane usage has grown, and rising trifluoroacetic acid consumption

Household chemicals: management of intoxication and antidotes.

Exposure to household products is very common, but in industrialized countries severe or fatal poisoning with household products is rare today, due to the legal restriction of sale of hazardous household products. The big challenge for physicians, pharmacologists and toxicologists is to identify the few exceptional life-threatening situations where immediate intervention is needed. Among thousands of innocuous products available for the household only very few are hazardous. Substances found in these products include detergents, corrosives, alcohols, hydrocarbons, and some of the essential oil

Evaluation for skin sensitization based on published literatures (existing information) of major PRTR designated chemical substances in Japan.

Of the 354 substances designated as class I under the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) law in Japan, we reviewed the sensitization data of the selected 144 substances and analyzed it from various aspects comparing human and animal data, determining the relationship between skin sensitization and chemical structure and comparing the various international organizations. Although most of them were expected to be hazardous substances, 49 out of the 144 substances lacked both human and animal sensitization data. Positive substances accounted for 69% and 42% of the substances for which

Triple water rinsing does not always render waste plastic pesticide containers non-hazardous waste.

After pesticide application onto crops, waste plastic pesticide containers (WPPC) may still contain residual active substances (AS) that are typically hazardous. Specific limits exist per pesticide active substance to classify WPPC as hazardous or non-hazardous wastes. The most frequent limit is 0.1% w/w (mass of active substance per mass of as received container). Triple rinsing is a widely used management technique to decontaminate WPPC and determine their downstream management. However, its efficiency needs to be evaluated for new types of pesticides. The goal of the work was to measure the
