Depression and health behaviors in women with Peripartum Cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Depression and health behavior engagement are a critical issue for recovery and secondary prevention in heart failure patients. No prior studies have examined these important clinical outcomes in young women diagnosed with Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM). We sought to characterize the prevalence of depression and health behaviors in PPCM patients and examine whether depression is associated with reduced engagement in health behaviors. METHODS: A nation-wide, cohort of 177 PPCM patients (mean age of 34.8 ± 5.7 years; median time since diagnosis of 3.0 ± 4.3 years) from a web-based

Incarceration, maternal hardship, and perinatal health behaviors.

Parental incarceration is associated with mental and physical health problems in children, yet little research directly tests mechanisms through which parental incarceration could imperil child health. We hypothesized that the incarceration of a woman or her romantic partner in the year before birth constituted an additional hardship for already-disadvantaged women, and that these additionally vulnerable women were less likely to engage in positive perinatal health behaviors important to infant and early childhood development. We analyzed 2006-2010 data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment and M

The impact of early occupational choice on health behaviors.

Occupational choice is a significant input into workers' health investments, operating in a manner that can be either health-promoting or health-depreciating. Recent studies have highlighted the potential importance of initial occupational choice on subsequent outcomes pertaining to morbidity. This study is the first to assess the existence and strength of a causal relationship between initial occupational choice at labor entry and subsequent health behaviors and habits. We utilize the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to analyze the effect of first occupation, as identified by industry category

Overweight, obesity, youth, and health-risk behaviors.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and severity of obesity have increased among children and adolescents. Although the medical and psychosocial consequences of youth obesity have been well documented, comparatively less information exists on the association of overweight/obesity with health-risk behaviors, which are considered to be a primary threat to adolescent health. PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the association of overweight and obesity with health-risk behaviors among U.S. youth. METHODS: Self-reported height and weight, substance use, violence, and bullying were assessed in a nationally

Health-promoting behaviors of sheltered homeless women.

To expand the body of knowledge and provide further insight into the complex area of homelessness and health, health practices of sheltered homeless women were investigated using a cross-sectional, descriptive, and non-experimental design using Pender's Health Promotion Model as the theoretical framework. The sample (n=137) was well educated, mostly unemployed, primarily single, and homeless due to relationship problems/conflict per self-report. Homeless women were noted to practice health-promoting behaviors in all areas but scored the lowest on physical activity and nutrition. Significant fi

Alexithymia and health behaviors in healthy male volunteers.

The association between alexithymia and maladaptive health behaviors was evaluated in 118 young, healthy men, aged 18-45 years. Subjects completed the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-26), and a health behaviors questionnaire, measuring alcohol and drug use, sedentary lifestyle, poor nutritional consumption, and risky sexual practices. In forced hierarchical regression analyses, the association between alexithymia and health behaviors was evaluated after adjusting for age, body mass index, social support, ambivalence over expression of emotion, and the expression of emotion. Results indicated th

Building the Behavioral Health Crisis Response Workforce.

In the past 5 years, significant federal, state, and local efforts have focused on building behavioral health crisis response services and on shifting this responsibility away from law enforcement. However, these efforts have been hampered by limitations of the behavioral health workforce. Strategies are needed to expand the workforce and to ensure that crisis responders have the competencies and skills necessary to meet the needs of the individuals they serve. Existing federal, state, and local mechanisms can be leveraged to support the development of this workforce. This effort includes inve
