Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) disproportionately affect Samoan communities in the Pacific Islands and United States, and food literacy is an important determinant of dietary behavior. Churches are central Samoan cultural institutions, yet their role in U.S. diaspora health practices remains underexamined. This study examines churches as nutrition and health information sources among the Samoan diaspora in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the largest Pacific Islander populations in the United States. Data derive from surveys of 147 Samoan adults and five semi-structured interviews conducte

OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the history and recent development of mental health services in Timor-Leste, a small developing country recovering from conflict. Challenges to effective service delivery are discussed as well as plans for future development.
CONCLUSIONS: Timor-Leste's mental health service began just over a decade ago. Unlike many other low and middle income countries where hospital-based services predominate, the mental health model in Timor-Leste is entirely community based. However, challenges to effective mental health care delivery are similar to most developing countries

This article describes findings from a community assessment project on 25 chronically mentally ill individuals who rejoined the community following discharge from psychiatric hospitals. The focus was to identify health concerns or problems and health promotion patterns using Healthy People 2000 as a guiding framework. Findings suggest that most participants found relocation to the community easy. Stress, depression, and abuse were mental health problems reported by participants. Physical health problems included high tobacco use, low exercise level, poor oral health, high-risk sexual behavior,

Understanding the structure and problems of communication between physicians and patients should be achieved before introducing a medical information network system for community health. To this end a questionnaire survey was performed on 2,362 patients who saw physicians in medical facilities in a certain district of Hiroshima city. As a result, it was revealed that 'explanations given by doctors' and 'explanatory ability of patients' were mutually closely related and formed a basis for other aspects of communication and patient behavior. Satisfaction with the explanation given by physicians

Health communication is increasingly recognized as central to public health practice, yet limited evidence shows how competencies are defined and developed in regions where the field is emerging. This mixed methods study examined how educators and practitioners in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) conceptualize essential knowledge, skills, and abilities for effective health communication and assess current education and training capacity. Survey data from 59 participants and follow-up interviews showed high importance ratings across all competency domains, particularly multicultural and crisi

The COVID-19 pandemic represented a turning point for many scientists, challenging established motives and attitudes toward public communication and raising new questions about their willingness to communicate publicly. During this time, scientists faced unprecedented scrutiny, leading to both recognition and maltreatment by the media, politicians and the public. This paper examines whether the pandemic experience altered scientists' rationale for engaging in health communication-specifically, whether perceived benefits (e.g. contributing to the public good) still outweigh potential costs (e.g

Previous studies have investigated the effects of metaphors in health communication. Yet, relatively little attention has been given to variations in metaphor usage when people talk about a particular disease, and what functions these metaphors may have in different communication contexts. The aim of this paper is to study the effects of metaphors in the communication of Dry Eye Syndrome (DES), which has developed into a prevalent eye disease. A systematic metaphor analysis was applied to 15 extensive blog entries and 308 survey responses which reflect people's first-hand experiences on having

Communicative health literacy is essential for effective interaction between patients and healthcare professionals. Its limitations may contribute to health inequalities. Ukrainian war refugees face significant barriers in accessing healthcare, primarily due to language and cultural differences. This study analyses their level of communicative health literacy and compares it with the Czech population. A quantitative study was conducted using the standardized HLS19-COM-P questionnaire. In November 2023, 1,182 Ukrainian refugees were surveyed using the CAWI method. Data analysis was performed us

OBJECTIVES: In Nigeria, despite the devastating effects of Lassa fever (LF), public health interventions have largely neglected timely health-seeking behavior (HSB) for LF symptoms. We, therefore, examined communication channels as a strategy associated with timely HSB in communities severely affected by LF in Bauchi State.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional design using a multi-stage sampling technique to select 1018 respondents aged 18 years and older. A structured questionnaire was used to conduct the interviews. Multivariate binary logistics regression was used to examine the statist

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a key organelle involved in the regulation of lipid and glucose metabolism, proteostasis, Ca2+ signaling, and detoxification. The structural organization of the ER is very dynamic and complex, with distinct subdomains such as the nuclear envelope and the peripheral ER organized into ER sheets and tubules. ER also forms physical contact sites with all other cellular organelles and with the plasma membrane. Both form and function of the ER are highly adaptive, with a potent capacity to respond to transient changes in environmental cues such as nutritional fluctu

BACKGROUND: The quality of health care clinician (HCC) communication varies, yet few studies evaluate ways to improve communication among adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF). We sought to characterize the attitudes of adolescents and young adults (AYA) with CF about HCC communication and describe the components important for high-quality communication.
METHODS: AYA with CF aged 12-20 years from a single large pediatric CF care center participated in a brief survey and semi-structured individual and group virtual interviews that were recorded, transcribed, coded, and analyzed with a combined

BACKGROUND: Many people deny science and reject health recommendations despite widely distributed facts and statistics. Didactic science and health communication is often dry, and relies on the false assumption that people make purely evidence-based decisions. Stories can be a powerful teaching tool by capturing attention and evoking emotion.
OBJECTIVE: We explore the impact and appeal of, and describe best practices for, using narrative (storytelling) versus didactic methods in science and health communication.
PATIENT INVOLVEMENT: No patients were involved in the review process.

Mitochondria sense both biochemical and energetic input in addition to communicating signals regarding the energetic state of the cell. Increasingly, these signaling organelles are recognized as key for regulating different cell functions. This review summarizes recent advances in mitochondrial communication in striated muscle, with specific focus on the processes by which mitochondria communicate with each other, other organelles, and across distant organ systems. Intermitochondrial communication in striated muscle is mediated via conduction of the mitochondrial membrane potential to adjacent

Although still in the early stages of development, the advent of fast, high-output, and cost-effective next-generation DNA sequencing technology is moving precision medicine into public health. Before this shift toward next-generation sequencing in public health settings, individual patients met geneticists after showing symptoms and through limited family screening. In the new era of precision public health, everyone is a possible participant in genetic sequencing, simply by being born (newborn screening), by donating blood (biobanking), or through population screening. These initiatives are

BACKGROUND: Adults with communication disabilities (CDs) experience poor health and health care outcomes. Few studies have examined behavioral health outcomes among this population. We compare the behavioral health of adults with CDs to their peers without such disabilities.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study examining the 2012 National Health Interview Survey Voice, Speech, and Language Supplement. We compared adults (> 17 years old) with voice only (n = 2169), speech/language (SL) only (n = 730), and speech/language and voice (SLV; n = 450) disabilities to adults without CDs (n = 29,873).

Flying-foxes provide critical ecosystem services, but their role as hosts to zoonotic pathogens may undermine conservation support. We surveyed 214 residents of Cairns, Australia, regarding their perceptions about health risks associated with flying-foxes and support for flying-fox conservation. Greater likelihood of handling a flying-fox was associated with lower knowledge about risks, greater conservation support, and environmental organization membership. Respondents less likely to seek medical attention after a minor scratch tended to be younger, unemployed and perceive lower risk. Individ

During the response to the 2014-2016 Ebola virus disease (Ebola) epidemic in West Africa, CDC addressed the disease on two fronts: in the epidemic epicenter of West Africa and at home in the United States. Different needs drove the demand for information in these two regions. The severity of the epidemic was reflected not only in lives lost but also in the amount of fear, misinformation, and stigma that it generated worldwide. CDC helped increase awareness, promoted actions to stop the spread of Ebola, and coordinated CDC communication efforts with multiple international and domestic partners.

Digital health applications and social-network-enabled healthcare platforms have transformed healthcare delivery by facilitating health communication, patient engagement, and access to medical information. However, the continuous exchange of sensitive biomedical data across interconnected digital environments raises significant ethical, privacy, and security challenges that may compromise user trust and the effective adoption of digital health technologies. Existing studies primarily address individual security and privacy concerns, with limited attention to integrated frameworks that simultan
