Screening men in the Toledo district of southern Belize for elevated blood pressure and blood sugar.

Belize is a small country in Central America that has largely completed its epidemiological transition. Consequently, the Belizean burden of disease is increasingly composed of chronic illness, especially diabetes and hypertension. Recently, Belizean progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing) has slowed. Belizean men have 275 cardiac and 60 diabetes related deaths per 100,000 per year which are the third and fifth highest incidence in the Americas. Prevalence of raised fasting glucose is 8.5% in men (third highest in the Americas). Overall, 24% of Belizeans hav

Early employer response to workplace injury: what injured workers perceive as fair and why these perceptions matter.

The authors examined whether early employer response to workplace injury affects injured workers' subsequent attitudes and mental health. At 1 month and 6 months postinjury, telephone surveys were conducted with 344 workers from Ontario, Canada, who had experienced a musculoskeletal lost-time workplace injury. One-month reports of initial supervisor reaction to the injury and the use of workplace-based return-to-work strategies (early contact with worker, ergonomic assessment, presence of designated coordinator, accommodation offer) were hypothesized to predict reports of fairness, affective c

Seroprevalence of human T-lymphotropic virus in blacks from a selected central Brooklyn population.

Human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) has been causally linked to adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-I-associated myelopathy. Few seroprevalence studies have been carried out in the United States. Because of the number of reports of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-I-associated myelopathy in blacks from central Brooklyn, New York, we decided to initiate a seroprevalence study in this community. Intravenous drug users and male homosexuals were excluded. A total of 480 individuals from medical clinics and health fairs we

Critical appraisal of fairness metrics for artificial intelligence-based clinical prediction models: a scoping review.

Predictive artificial intelligence (AI) offers an opportunity to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes but risks perpetuating biases if fairness is inadequately addressed. However, the definition of fairness remains unclear. We conducted a scoping review to identify and critically appraise fairness metrics in clinical predictive AI models. We defined a fairness metric as a metric quantifying whether a model discriminates (societally) against individuals or groups defined by sensitive attributes. We searched five databases for literature published during 2014-24, screened 820 records,

Assessing the FAIRness of survey data collected during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany.

This study investigates the FAIRness (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) of survey data collected during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. During the pandemic, surveys played a crucial role in capturing public attitudes and health-related behaviors, but researchers often faced a trade-off between rapid data collection and implementing high-quality survey designs. Using metadata from the "Survey Data Collection during the COVID-19 Pandemic" (SDCCP) project, which documents 717 surveys conducted in Germany, we assessed the FAIRness of surveys published with a persiste

Circulating Estrogen Levels and Self-Reported Health and Mobility Limitation in Community-Dwelling Men of the Framingham Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: Self-rated health is a commonly used global indicator of health status. Few studies have examined the association of self-rated health and mobility with estrone and estradiol in men. Accordingly, we determined the cross-sectional, incident, and mediating relations between circulating estrone and estradiol levels with self-rated health, mobility limitation, and physical performance in community-dwelling men. METHODS: The cross-sectional sample included 1,148 men, who attended Framingham Offspring Study Examinations 7 and 8. Estrone and estradiol levels were measured using liquid ch

A neighborhood wealth metric for use in health studies.

BACKGROUND: Measures of neighborhood deprivation used in health research are typically based on conventional area-based SES. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to examine new data and measures of SES for use in health research. Specifically, assessed property values are introduced as a new individual-level metric of wealth and tested for their ability to substitute for conventional area-based SES as measures of neighborhood deprivation. METHODS: The analysis was conducted in 2010 using data from 1922 participants in the 2008-2009 survey of the Seattle Obesity Study (SOS). It compared the rela

Women with fair phenotypes seem to confer a survival advantage in a low UV milieu. A nested matched case control study.

BACKGROUND: Sun exposure in combination with skin pigmentation is the main determinant for vitamin D status. Human skin color seems to be adapted and optimized for regional sun ultraviolet (UV) intensity. However, we do not know if fair, UV-sensitive skin is a survival advantage in regions with low UV radiation. METHODS: A population-based nested case-control study of 29,518 Caucasian women, ages 25 to 64 years from Southern Sweden who responded to a questionnaire regarding risk-factors for malignant melanoma in 1990 and followed for 25 years. For each fair woman, defined as having red hair o

Estimating the frequency and characteristics of respiratory disease outbreaks at mass gatherings in the United States: Findings from a state and local health department assessment.

Mass gatherings create environments conducive to the transmission of infectious diseases. Thousands of mass gatherings are held annually in the United States; however, information on the frequency and characteristics of respiratory disease outbreaks and on the use of nonpharmaceutical interventions at these gatherings is scarce. We administered an online assessment to the 50 state health departments and 31 large local health departments in the United States to gather information about mass gathering-related respiratory disease outbreaks occurring between 2009 and 2014. The assessment also capt

Fair allocation strategies for opioid settlements.

Multi-billion-dollar opioid settlement agreements have been reached with pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors to address their liability in contributing to the opioid epidemic in the United States. These agreements stipulate that within the state, the settlement funds must be directly allocated to local government (e.g., counties) and used for abatement activities to remediate the harm of the opioid epidemic in communities. This naturally leads to an important question of how the funds should be distributed to meet the diverse needs of the counties consistently across all counties to

Virus sharing, genetic sequencing, and global health security.

This Perspective focuses on the future of the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (PIP) Framework, which was initially established to promote the fair sharing of public health-related pandemic influenza samples between countries. We examine the changes that need to be made to address the growing likelihood that genetic sequence data might be shared instead of physical virus samples, as well as the need to expand the PIP framework's scope and to improve its fairness.
