Health literacy strengths and challenges of people in New South Wales prisons: a cross-sectional survey using the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ).

BACKGROUND: Health literacy is an important factor for enabling people to manage their health and live long fulfilling lives. People in prison are frequently from marginalised communities, often out of reach of conventional community based health organisations, and have poorer health outcomes. It is essential to understanding the health literacy profiles of people in prison, and its contribution to the well-established health inequities and outcomes of this population. This study aimed to use a multi-dimensional health literacy measurement tool to describe the strengths and challenges of adult

Improving Children's Mental Health Literacy Through the Cocreation of an Intervention and Scale Validation: Protocol for the CHILD-Mental Health Literacy Research Study.

BACKGROUND: Children's mental health is a public health priority, with 1 in 5 European children younger than 12 years having a behavioral, developmental, or psychological disorder. Mental health literacy (MHL) is a modifiable determinant of mental health, promoting psychological well-being and reducing mental health problems. Despite its significance, no interventions or scales currently exist for increasing and measuring MHL in this population. OBJECTIVE: This study has dual objectives: (1) cocreating and evaluating an intervention on children's MHL, and (2) developing and validating a scale

Oral Health Literacy and Dental Caries Status in Adults.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the relationship between oral health literacy (OHL) and dental caries among a convenience sample of adult, first-time patients at two U.S. dental schools; we hypothesized that adults with low OHL would have fewer teeth, more untreated dental decay, and fewer restorations. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis was part of the larger Multisite Oral Health Literacy Research (MOHLR) Study. OHL was assessed using the Comprehensive Measure of Oral Health Knowledge (CMOHK). The dental caries outcome variables (number of decayed, filled, decayed plus filled, and teeth present)

Using Ecological Systems Theory to Enhance Community Health Literacy.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated long-standing disparities that many people in the United States experience due to their race and ethnicity and socioeconomic status. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: An outcry from several relevant stakeholders ignited a federal response from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), who, among other entities, decided to address low health literacy (HL) in underserved communities. Evidence suggests that HL impacts under-resourced communities' understanding of health issues and whether

Mental Health Literacy about Personality Disorders: A Multicultural Study.

Mental health literacy (MHL) refers to lay people's knowledge and beliefs about the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. The current study aimed at investigating MHL regarding personality disorders (PDs) multiculturally, comparing Turkish and Italian populations. In total, 262 participants responded to an online vignette identification task that required them to label the PDs of seven hypothetical subjects and rate various dimensions of their disorders. Narcissistic (25%), obsessive-compulsive (13%), and paranoid (12%) PDs were the most correctly labeled, while the average accuracy value

Health literacy of Dutch adults: a cross sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Relatively little knowledge is available to date about health literacy among the general population in Europe. It is important to gain insights into health literacy competences among the general population, as this might contribute to more effective health promotion and help clarify socio-economic disparities in health. This paper is part of the European Health Literacy Survey (HLS-EU). It aims to add to the body of theoretical knowledge about health literacy by measuring perceived difficulties with health information in various domains of health, looking at a number of competences

Health Literacy in Pediatric Care: Evidence, Gaps, and Opportunities.

Health literacy is a foundational component of providing accessible pediatric care, influencing whether families can understand, access, and use health information. As families increasingly rely on online health resources, health literacy skills applied to digital information, or e-health literacy, has become an evolving dimension of pediatric health literacy. The concept of health literacy extends beyond an individual's abilities, intersecting with the demands placed on individuals by healthcare systems. There is a growing focus on organizational health literacy (OHL), which reflects how effe

Low income and health literacy: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social inequalities in health care remain a pressing issue with direct consequences for treatment outcomes. One complex mechanism contributing to this inequality involves patient's health literacy - including their ability to perceive a medical need and understand the availability of care. This scoping review aims to examine whether economically disadvantaged groups are at greater risk of low health literacy and to identify potential intervention targets to improve health care access and equity. METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE (Ovid) in May 2022 and again in November 2

Evaluating Patients' Health Literacy to Improve Thyroid Pathology Reports.

INTRODUCTION: As our growing population demonstrates a significant increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer, so does patient access to their medical records. Poor health literacy and understanding of disease severity, underscores the importance of effective and accessible patient-doctor communication. No previous studies on patient understanding of thyroid pathology reports exist; therefore, we sought to characterize health literacy in this population. METHODS: Using a modified Delphi technique, a 12-question multiple-choice survey regarding common pathology terms with possible definitions

Education-based differences in alcohol health literacy in Germany.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol health literacy is critical for informed consumer decision making but has yet received limited attention in public health research. We therefore seek to measure alcohol health literacy and its educational distribution in Germany. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we developed and applied a brief nine-item questionnaire on alcohol health literacy in an adult convenience sample (n = 391; February to April 2023). The association of educational attainment with 'insufficient' alcohol health literacy was tested in adjusted logistic regression models. RESULTS: Insufficie

Mental health literacy: Perspectives from Northern Kenya Turkana adolescents.

Mental illness accounts for high levels of morbidity, mortality and poor quality of life among young people. Depression, anxiety, conduct issues and hyperactive disorder account for 13% of the global burden of disease that affects one in seven adolescents. In Kenya, not much is documented about the mental health of non-school-going adolescents, and yet they make up about 1.8 million of the country's population. An ethnographic study by Focus Group Discussions with 32 rural northern Kenya Turkana-based adolescents divided into school and nonschool groups was conducted. We read out vignettes in

Assessing and improving public mental health literacy concerning rTMS.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has received empirical support as a viable treatment alternative for treatment-resistant major depressive disorder. Nevertheless, patients and the public-at-large may be hesitant to adopt rTMS. In three studies, we sought to (1) assess and (2) improve public perceptions of rTMS as a treatment for depression. METHODS: In Study 1 (N = 107), we administered questionnaires on Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) to individuals from the US and Canada in a cross-sectional design to assess perceptions of rTMS compared to psychopharmacology,
