Physical exercise, health, and disease treatment: The role of macrophages.

Subclinical inflammation is linked to comorbidities and risk factors, consolidating the diagnosis of chronic non-communicable diseases, such as insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, hepatic steatosis, and some types of cancer. In this context, the role of macrophages is highlighted as a marker of inflammation as well as for the high power of plasticity of these cells. Macrophages can be activated in a wide range between classical or proinflammatory, named M1, and alternative or anti-inflammatory, also known as M2 polarization. All nuances between M1 and M2 macrophages orchestrate the immune res

Prevalence of cognitive impairment in home health physical therapy.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cognitive impairment in home health physical therapy (HHPT) is unknown. We sought to identify the prevalence of cognitive impairment, including cognitive impairment no dementia (CIND) and dementia, among older adults who used HHPT, and if cognitive impairment prevalence was higher among those with HHPT-relevant characteristics. METHODS: For our cross-sectional analysis, we identified 963 fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries with HHPT claims (>85 years old: 28.8%, women: 63.7%, non-Hispanic White: 82.1%) in the 2014 and 2016 waves of the Health and Retirement St

Association between physical fitness and musculoskeletal health in firefighters.

Introduction: Firefighters are often placed in situations that require high levels of physical exertion, leading to significant strain on firefighters' musculoskeletal system, predisposing them to musculoskeletal discomfort (MSD) and/or musculoskeletal injury (MSI). Physical fitness programs are often recommended and justified, in part, to prevent injuries. The aim of this study was to determine the association between physical fitness and musculoskeletal health (MSH) in firefighters. Methods: A total of 308 full-time firefighters took part in the study conducted in Cape Town, South Africa. Ph

Promoting physical activity in older women to maximize health.

Physical activity can maximize health by improving disease-oriented and patient-oriented outcomes in women age 60 and older. General activity levels are low in the United States. Promoting physical activity in clinical practice is limited by time constraints and knowledge deficits. Understanding the benefits of the specific type of physical activity, the intensity, and the level in older women helps clinicians provide focused, time-efficient counseling in primary care. This review details the benefits of physical activity in older women by disease state.

Does in-prison physical and mental health impact recidivism?

Incarceration is definitively linked to poor health, and upon release from prison, many individuals experience difficulty in maintaining good health. Given the complexity of the reentry process, one's health status, both in and out of prison, likely influences additional aspects of reentry, such as abstaining from crime or adhering to parole terms. The purpose of this study is to determine whether in-prison physical and mental health, as well as changes to an individual's health upon release from prison, are related to the likelihood of recidivating. We employ the Serious and Violent Reentry I

The physical health costs of positive adaptation to childhood adversity.

Theories of allostatic load suggest that recurrent adaptive adjustments in contexts of adversity may have a negative impact on physical well-being. To test this hypothesis, this study evaluated 6-year-old children's ego-resilience and physical abuse experiences on behavior problems and physical illness at the age of 8 years. A significant interaction between ego-resilience and physical abuse exposure indicated that, although ego-resilience buffered physically abused children from internalizing problems, it also predicted more physical illness in that group. Findings contribute to the growing b

Fluctuating Physical Function and Health: Their Role at the End of Life.

BACKGROUND: Our recent research suggests that a fluctuating trajectory, previously thought to be the experience of those dying with heart failure or chronic lung disease, may not accurately characterize the end of life for these patients. OBJECTIVE: We sought to further examine health and function to investigate whether other measures or a different time frame captures the purported exacerbation/recovery trajectory associated with these diseases. DESIGN: Function and health data were collected prospectively at six-month intervals for 17 years during the Heath, Aging and Body Composition Stud

Neurocognitive and physical functioning in the Seveso Women's Health Study.

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is neurotoxic in animals but few studies have investigated its effects on the human brain. Related dioxin-like compounds have been linked to poorer cognitive and motor function in older adults, with effects more pronounced in women, perhaps due to the loss of neuro-protective estrogen in menopause. On 10 July 1976, a chemical explosion in Seveso, Italy, resulted in one of the highest known residential exposures to TCDD. In 1996, we initiated the Seveso Women's Health Study, a retrospective cohort study of the health of the women who were newborn to 40

Accelerometer-determined physical activity, mobility disability, and health.

BACKGROUND: We have a limited understanding of the objectively-determined physical activity levels among those with mobility limitations. Further, the association between objectively-measured physical activity and biomarkers among those with mobility limitations is relatively unknown. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, the primary objectives of this study were to compare accelerometer-determined physical activity levels among those with and without mobility limitations and determine if greater participation in physical activity was associated with more favorable health outcomes among those with mobility d

Pathways linking childhood maltreatment and adult physical health.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether a self-reported history of childhood maltreatment (physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and physical and emotional neglect) is related to poor adult physical health through health risk behaviors (obesity, substance dependence, and smoking), adverse life events, and psychological distress. METHODS: Two hundred and seventy nine (279) women aged 31-54, primarily poor, urban, and African American with a history of substance use during pregnancy, were assessed for perceived physical health status using the Health Status Questionnaire (SF-36) and any reporte

Training the child athlete: physical fitness, health and injury.

The number of children and adolescents participating in organised athletic activities worldwide is increasing. However, physical fitness levels among youth are lower today than in previous decades. The combination of increased exposure and decreased preparedness for sports participation has led to an epidemic of both acute and chronic sports-related injuries in this population. Poor physical fitness, in addition to having negative health consequences, seems to be a risk factor for sports-related injury. Accurate injury surveillance data are required to better define the magnitude of the proble

Responses of health and physical educators to overweight children in Alabama.

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the increasing problem of overweight children in Alabama including clinical definition, risk factors, and prevalence data. Health and physical educators should become familiar with guidelines released by national organizations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Institute of Medicine, and state departments of education and public health. These guidelines provide direction to health promotion program activities in schools, community, and recreational settings aimed at modifying predisposing, reinforcing, and enabl

Prolactin awareness: an essential consideration for physical health in schizophrenia.

Elevations in serum prolactin levels (hyperprolactinaemia) are a common side effect of conventional and some atypical antipsychotic treatments. In patients with schizophrenia, the adverse effects of antipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinaemia on physical health (e.g. fertility problems, sexual dysfunction and reduced bone mineral density) are gaining attention. Accumulating evidence shows consistent 'prolactin-raising' effects of conventional antipsychotics and risperidone compared with other current atypical antipsychotics, which are more likely to have 'prolactin-sparing' properties. Prolactin

Exposure to physical violence during childhood, aging, and health.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to estimate the relationship between exposure to physical violence administered by one's parents and adult health. In the process, the authors also examine factors that mediate and moderate this association. METHODS: Hypothesized relationships were tested using ordinary least squares regression analyses with data collected from a nationwide sample of adults aged 25 to 74 in 1995. RESULTS: The data suggest that exposure to childhood physical violence is associated with diminished mental and physical health in adulthood. These associations do not vary b

A meta-analytic review of research on hostility and physical health.

A new meta-analysis of research on hostility and physical health was conducted that includes 15 studies used in previous meta-analytic reviews and 30 new independent studies. Overall, the results suggest that hostility is an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). For structured interview indicators of potential for hostility, the weighted mean r was .18. After controlling for other risk factors for CHD, the widely used Cook-Medley Hostility Scale and other cognitive-experiential measures were most predictive of all-cause mortality (weighted mean r = .16) and, to a lesser ext

Is having an alcoholic father hazardous for children's physical health?

Five hundred and ninety-nine French-Canadian pre-adolescent children for whom the alcoholic status of the parents was known were subdivided into eight groups, according to family structure (intact, non-intact), alcoholic status of the father (alcoholic, non-alcoholic) and gender of the target child (girl, boy). ANCOVAs were conducted (controlling for income, a factor which contributes to illness) for health-related variables in order to test the hypothesis that children of alcoholic fathers have more physical health problems compared to children without alcoholic fathers. Mental and physical health and ageing in mental handicap: a review.

With some exceptions, the mental and physical health problems of elderly mentally handicapped people are similar to those of the elderly population as a whole. Psychiatric disorder is more common due to a higher frequency of behaviour disorders. Increased longevity has been accompanied by a progressive increase in deaths from age-related conditions and in individuals with Down's syndrome exposed a predisposition to premature senility and dementia. Service issues include general health care, preventive measures, provision for those with psychiatric and age-related problems, and staff training.
