Established and novel quantitative electromyographic techniques with potential for planning nerve transfer surgery: a pilot study.

Donor nerve health likely underlies much variability in nerve transfer outcomes. Standard electromyography (EMG) and clinical examination suffer from subjectivity and a lack of standardization when assessing nerve health. Quantitative electromyography promises to assess nerve health more accurately. The objective of this retrospective pilot study was to evaluate rapid and feasible quantitative electromyography methods in determining donor nerve health for planning nerve transfer surgery and its correlation with functional outcomes. For this study, the branch of the radial nerve supplying the s

Restraints and seclusion in psychiatry: striking a balance between protection and coercion. Critical overview of international regulations and rulings.

Restraint and seclusion (R&S) measures in psychiatric settings are applied worldwide, despite poor scientific evidence to back up their effectiveness. The medical, ethical and medico-legal implications of coercive interventions are broad-ranging and multifaceted. The review aims to shed a light on the most relevant and meaningful standards that have been laid out by international treaties, supranational institutions (United Nations, Council of Europe, World Health Organization), scientific institutions (American Medical Association, Australian Department of Health), legislative bodies and cour

Nursing shortages and international nurse migration.

BACKGROUND: The United Kingdom and the United States are among several developed countries currently experiencing nursing shortages. While the USA has not yet implemented policies to encourage nurse immigration, nursing shortages will likely result in the growth of foreign nurse immigration to the USA. Understanding the factors that drive the migration of nurses is critical as the USA exerts more pull on the foreign nurse workforce. AIM: To predict the international migration of nurses to the UK using widely available data on country characteristics. METHOD: The Nursing and Midwifery Council

The 'Nature Impact' feasibility study protocol: a mixed methods feasibility study of a group- and nature-based health intervention for adults experiencing mild to moderate anxiety, depression and/or stress.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety, depression and stress-related conditions are prevalent and growing public health challenges, impacting individuals' quality of life and placing significant strain on healthcare systems globally. These complex conditions rarely respond to a single mode of treatment, underscoring the importance of diverse and complementary approaches. Nature-based health interventions (NBHIs) represent one such perspective, offering novel opportunities to address mental health by engaging with natural environments. While international interest in NBHIs is growing, evidence on how these inter

Post-pandemic respiratory infections in children born during or before the COVID-19 pandemic: a nationwide cohort study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) during the COVID-19 pandemic altered the circulation of respiratory pathogens. Following an initial decline in infections, a resurgence occurred as restrictions eased. We aimed to determine whether reduced early-life exposure to pathogens increased the risk of severe respiratory infections. METHODS: In this longitudinal nationwide population-based study in Sweden, we compared a pandemic birth cohort of children born in Sweden between March 1 and December 31 from 2020 (n = 92,791) with aligned pre-pandemic cohorts born between 1 March and Dec

Determinants of trust among ethnic minority community members towards community-based organisations and leaders during pandemics and other emergencies in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Effective pandemic plans must be applicable to all members of our communities. However, people from multicultural communities with diverse language needs often engage with a wide range of organisations and individuals when seeking information during a pandemic or health emergency. Despite this, there is limited evidence on levels of trust and the influence of these sources on promoting community engagement with pandemic preparedness activities in high-income settings. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among members of ethnic minority communities in Australia who self

Ending child homelessness in America.

Approximately 1.5 million children experience homelessness in America each year. The current economic recession and staggering numbers of housing foreclosures have caused the numbers of homeless families to increase dramatically. The impact of homelessness on families and children is devastating. Without a place to call home, children are severely challenged by unpredictability, dislocation, and chaos. Homelessness and exposure to traumatic stresses place them at high risk for poor mental health outcomes. Despite the pressing needs of these children, federal policy during the last decade has f

Early insight on how climate action can benefit health in rural India.

INTRODUCTION: India faces severe health impacts from climate change. While urban-focused initiatives like the National Clean Air Programme and heat action plans aim to address dangerous exposures, rural regions, home to over 60% of India's population, remain underprioritized in mitigation and adaptation measures. To address this gap, the Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) and Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) implemented the Hariyali Gram (Green Village) initiative, deploying climate-friendly technologies to support improved lighting, cooling, irrigation, and clean cooking in pilo
