Elizabeth Usher memorial lecture 2024: Speech-language pathology practice in Aboriginal spaces: A journey of learning and unlearning.

In this paper I describe learnings gained from 15 years collaboration with Aboriginal colleagues in Australia, in endeavours to improve rehabilitation services for Aboriginal people with brain injury and their families. Colleagues include Aboriginal researchers, clinicians, and people with communication and other disorders associated with brain injury and their families. My research journey in this field has been made possible through the work, mentoring, and support of these colleagues who introduced me to Aboriginal ways of knowing, being, and doing. My journey has involved challenging and u

Breaking the cycle: Effect of a multi-agency maternity service redesign on reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander newborns in out-of-home care: A prospective, non-randomised, intervention study in urban Australia.

BACKGROUND: Strategies to reduce over-representation of Indigenous children in out-of-home care must start in pregnancy given Indigenous babies are 6 % of infants (<1 year), yet 43 % of infants in out-of-home care. OBJECTIVE: To determine if an Indigenous-led, multi-agency, partnership redesign of maternity services decreases the likelihood of babies being removed at birth. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Women carrying an Indigenous baby/babies who gave birth at the Mater Mothers' Public Hospital, Brisbane (2013-2019). METHODS: A prospective, non-randomised, intervention trial evaluated a multi-

Health-related quality of life and lifetime QALY loss among Indigenous Australians with chronic conditions: an age-stratified analysis.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous Australians in rural and remote areas experience substantial health-related quality of life (HRQoL) impacts alongside persistent healthcare access barriers. Community-led virtual primary care services offer an innovative approach to improving access to health care services for Indigenous Australians in rural and remote areas. OBJECTIVE: To examine age-stratified HRQoL patterns and estimate the lifetime quality-adjusted life year (QALY) loss among Indigenous Australians with chronic conditions enrolled in a rural virtual primary care service. METHODS: We conducted a cro

How Does the Mental Health Lived Experience Workforce Describe and Enact Our Discipline? A Narrative Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, mental health systems continue to grapple with providing recovery-oriented services as part of broader reform efforts. Critical to the objective of transforming mental health services is the employment of a rights-based, non-clinical lived experience workforce. Vital to undertaking the roles, and supporting this workforce, is a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge and practices of the discipline, particularly in situations where rapid growth may see this workforce developing in an ad hoc way. The aim of this review was to determine how members of the mental hea

Family-centred interventions by primary healthcare services for Indigenous early childhood wellbeing in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Primary healthcare services in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States have embraced the concept of family-centred care as a promising approach to supporting and caring for the health of young Indigenous children and their families. This scoping review assesses the quality of the evidence base and identifies the published literature on family- centred interventions for Indigenous early childhood wellbeing. METHODS: Fourteen electronic databases, grey literature sources and the reference lists of Indigenous maternal and child health reviews were searched to identify re

Experiences of New Zealand Māori Mothers' Engagement with Health and Social Services Post-COVID-19 2020 Lockdown.

BACKGROUND: Despite universal provision of maternity care, Māori (Indigenous peoples of Aotearoa/New Zealand) experience significant maternal and infant health disparities compared to their dominant Pākehā (non-Māori) counterparts. This paper examined the lived realities of postnatal Māori māmā (mothers) engaging with health and social services. Enablers and barriers were identified to better understand what is required to strengthen health services' responsiveness to Māori māmā health needs and aspirations. METHODS: Underpinned by Kaupapa Māori research principles, which are grounded in Māor

Grounding Wellness: Coloniality, Placeism, Land, and a Critique of "Social" Determinants of Indigenous Mental Health in the Canadian Context.

Authored by a small team of settler and Indigenous researchers, all of whom are deeply involved in scholarship and activism interrogating ongoing processes of coloniality in lands now known to many as Canada, this paper critically examines "social" and grounded determinants of Indigenous mental health and wellness. After placing ourselves on the grounds from which we write, we begin by providing an overview of the social determinants of health (SDOH), a conceptual framework with deep roots in colonial Canada. Though important in pushing against biomedical framings of Indigenous health and well

Increasing Access to Mental Health Supports for 18- to 25-Year-Old Indigenous Youth With the JoyPop Mobile Mental Health App: Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Transitional-aged youth have a high burden of mental health difficulties in Canada, with Indigenous youth, in particular, experiencing additional circumstances that challenge their well-being. Mobile health (mHealth) approaches hold promise for supporting individuals in areas with less access to services such as Northern Ontario. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the JoyPop app in increasing emotion regulation skills for Indigenous transitional-aged youth (aged 18-25 years) on a waitlist for mental health services when compared with

Enacting policy: mapping Kaupapa Māori aspirations onto the New Zealand Eating Issues and Eating Disorders Strategy.

AIM: The prevalence of Māori experiencing ngā māuiui kai (eating disorders; NMK) is comparable to that of non-Māori. Despite this, little is known about Māori presentations within Kaupapa Māori health services. This paper uses Kaupapa Māori kaimahi expertise to describe these presentations and identify steps to strengthen access and support. METHOD: Informed by Kaupapa Māori methodologies and participatory action research, this co-designed study involved Purapura Whetu, a Kaupapa Māori health service in Christchurch. A wānanga convened eight kaimahi to discuss challenges, service strengths an

"How can our children learn from us about our way of life or understand who they are?": Residential schools and their impact on the wellbeing of Indigenous youth in Attapadi, South India.

Residential schools are commonly used in India to provide education for Indigenous youth, which requires young people to stay for long periods at distance from their families and communities. Internationally, there is clear evidence for the deleterious effects of residential schools on the mental health and social and community outcomes of Indigenous children, however little is known about the Indian Indigenous experience. This study examined the impact of residential schooling on Indigenous children's wellbeing and that of their communities, using data from an ethnographic research project in

Commentary on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on opioid use disorder treatment among Indigenous communities in the United States and Canada.

This commentary focuses on how some Indigenous communities in the United States (U.S.) and Canada are addressing the opioid epidemic within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, from the perspective of the co-authors as researchers, clinicians, and pharmacists working within or among Indigenous communities in three eastern Canadian provinces and two western U.S. states. The pandemic has likely exacerbated opioid use problems among Indigenous communities, especially for individuals with acute distress or comorbid mental illness, or who are in need of withdrawal management or residential service

Health and wellbeing of indigenous older adults living in the tea gardens of Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: There are currently 1.5 million indigenous people in Bangladesh, constituting 1.8% of the total population and representing one of the country's most deprived communities. This study explores the health status and quality of life along with their determinants among indigenous older people in Bangladesh in order to fill the knowledge and evidence gap on this topic. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was deployed in October 2019 in the Sylhet division of Bangladesh which involved a cross-sectional survey among 400 indigenous older adults (200 males, 200 females) from 8 tea gardens us

Equity, regulation and Te Tiriti o Waitangi: a rapid review of Putting Patients First.

The Crown's health workforce reforms, Putting Patients First: Modernising health workforce regulation (PPF),1 emerge in a political climate that is actively dismantling Māori health gains, undermining tino rangatiratanga and reframing equity as "needs not race". Using rapid Tiriti review-an adaptation of critical Tiriti analysis-we assessed the proposal's alignment with Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We found that PPF did not align well with the preamble or the articles of Te Tiriti. There was no equity analysis; no acknowledgement of hauora as taonga, limited Māori involvement in decision making, eras

Indigenous patient experiences of returning to country: a qualitative evaluation on the Country Health SA Dialysis bus.

BACKGROUND: Rates of End-Stage Kidney Disease among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) Australians in remote areas are disproportionately high; however, haemodialysis is not currently offered in most remote areas. People must therefore leave their 'Country' (with its traditions and supports) and relocate to metropolitan or regional centres, disrupting their kinship and the cultural ties that are important for their wellbeing. The South Australian Mobile Dialysis Truck is a service which visits remote communities for one to two week periods; allowing patients to have dialysis on

Scanning the respiratory service landscape in NSW-based Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services.

BACKGROUND: Chronic respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), disproportionately impact the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of Australia. Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) are primary care services, established to provide healthcare in culturally safe environments for Aboriginal people. There is little information about the respiratory services for people with chronic respiratory diseases provided by ACCHSs. AIM: To describe current provision of respiratory services of ACCHSs based in New South Wales (NSW), with a focus
