Unfortunately, adults with ID are frequently marginalized in society, and free coverage for their medical services is limited. CONTEXT: With the purpose of improving access to dental care services for groups in situations of vulnerability, Community Dentistry and the implementation of Mobile Dental Units (MDUs) have been a solution to cover health needs and to reduce barriers regardin

Use of Assistive Technology for Persons with Psychosocial Disability: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Assistive technology (AT) refers to assistive products (AP) and associated systems and services that are relevant for function, independence, well-being, and quality of life for individuals with disabilities. There is a high unmet need for AT for persons with disabilities and this is worse for persons with cognitive and mental or psychosocial disabilities (PDs). Further, information and knowledge on AT for PDs is limited. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to explore the pattern of AT use among persons with PDs and its associated socioeconomic and health benefits. METHODS: The

Association of functional disability with mental health services use and perceived unmet needs for mental health care among adults with serious mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 13.1 million U.S. adults experienced serious mental illness (SMI) in 2019. Persons with disability (PWD) have higher risks of SMI. Ensuring adequate access to mental health (MH) services for PWD is imperative to ameliorate this burden. METHODS: Using the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we obtained study variables for U.S. adults with SMI in the past year and used multivariable logistic regression models to examine the association of disability with MH services and perceived unmet needs. RESULTS: The sample comprised 12,532 respondents, representing

Projecting long-term trends in mobility limitations: impact of excess weight, smoking and physical inactivity.

BACKGROUND: Policy makers need disability projections for planning adequate services and measures for health promotion. The aim of this study is to provide projections on severe mobility limitations up to year 2044 and illustrate how the projected prevalence and the number of persons with severe mobility limitations are affected by potential changes in the modifiable risk factors, namely excess weight, physical inactivity and smoking. METHODS: We analysed the nationally representative, repeated measures Health 2000 and 2011 Surveys (BRIF8901) with 8615 and 6740 participants, respectively, age

Towards Equitable Health Care Access: Community Participatory Research Exploring Unmet Health Care Needs of Homeless Individuals.

Community and health services often overlook health care needs of persons experiencing homelessness, which leads to deterioration in health and increased utilization of emergency services. Since homeless people are underrepresented in health service research, little is known about their unmet health care needs, particularly in smaller cities where resources are limited. This community-based participatory research explored the experiences of small-city homeless service users (HSUs) with unmet health care needs and community service providers (CSPs) who work with them to determine barriers to he

The adult day care workforce in England at a time of policy change: implications for learning disability support services.

NFS/N-sld mice harbor a spontaneous autosomal recessive mutation, sld (sublingual gland differentiation arrest) and histologically display attenuated mucous cell expression in sublingual glands (Hayashi et al. Am J Pathol 132: 187-191, 1988). Because altered serous demilune cell expression is unknown, we determined the phenotypic expression of this cell type in mutants. Moreover, we evaluated whether absence of glycoconjugate staining in 3-day-old mutant glands is related to disruption in apomucin gene expression and/or to posttranslational glycosylation events. Serous cell differentiation is

Mental Healthcare: Experiences of Rural Women With Disabilities Following Interpersonal Violence.

BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY: Although modern family planning methods are readily available in Egypt at low cost, a considerable proportion of women still have an unmet contraceptive need. The aim of this study was to detect the risk factors of unmet contraceptive need among married women in the childbearing period in an underprivileged area in Cairo with high population density. A survey of 2340 women in the Marg district of Eastern Cairo was conducted by means of home interviews. For every woman identified as having an unmet contraceptive need (n=174), the next two women identified with met co

Essential healthcare services during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study of community needs and perspectives in West Java, Indonesia.

OBJECTIVES: While issues in healthcare facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic have been widely discussed, little is known about health service issues from community (demand) sides. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: 38 randomly selected villages covered by 21 preidentified community health centres in 3 districts in West Java, Indonesia. The survey was conducted fr

Managing demand for social care among adults with intellectual disabilities: A systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Demand for formal social services support for adults with intellectual disabilities is increasing internationally. Initiatives which empower individuals with intellectual disabilities to improve their health, develop living skills or manage chronic illnesses may promote independence and reduce unnecessary dependency on social services. METHODS: A "preventative framework" to managing demand comprising several domains was developed from existing literature to guide the search strategy. RESULTS: Fourteen papers related to three domains in the predetermined preventative framework wer

Development of Patient-Centered Disability Status Questions to Address Equity in Care.

BACKGROUND: Patients with disabilities experience disparities in accessing and receiving high-quality health care services as compared to patients without disabilities. To address the disparities, health care organizations need to identify which of their patients have disabilities to track quality of care and provide appropriate health care accommodations. To date, no evidence-based sets of disability questions exist that serve these purposes. A study was conducted to identify patient-centered disability questions for health care organizations to determine which patients require health care ac

The first word in accessibility is "access".

This paper focuses on access challenges that I have experienced as someone who uses AAC, how my team and I have resolved them, and what challenges I face now. I use AAC and assistive technology (AT) to work, advocate, exercise, socialize, manage my healthcare, and participate in community-based activities. Over the years, I have used many different AAC systems, computer applications, and access methods as technology advanced and my needs and skills changed because of spinal muscular atrophy. Too often AAC is only considered as a speech prosthesis, rather than as a support for communication in

Group Home Staff Experiences With Work and Health in the COVID-19 Pandemic in Massachusetts.

IMPORTANCE: Direct reports of the experiences of staff working in group homes for people with serious mental illness (SMI) and/or intellectual or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) are rarely reported. Hearing from workers about their experiences in the COVID-19 pandemic may inform future workforce and public policy. OBJECTIVE: To gather baseline data on worker experience with the perceived effects of COVID-19 on health and work in the pandemic prior to initiating an intervention to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and to measure differences in worker experience by gender, race, ethnicity, edu

Models of Governance of Disability Therapy Support Workers in Rural and Remote Settings: A Systematic Scoping Review.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) ushered in a transformative era in disability services in Australia, requiring new workforce models to meet evolving participant needs. Therapy Assistants are utilised to increase the capacity of therapy services in areas of workforce shortage. The governance arrangements required to support this emergent workforce have received limited attention in the literature. This review examined the key components and contextual factors of governance in rural settings, specifically focusing on therapy support workers under the guidance of allied health pro

BACKGROUND: Access to medical rehabilitation in Germany is largely standardized, yet influenced by various contextual conditions. This study examines the extent to which people with pre-existing disabilities face differences in access to medical rehabilitation compared with all people in need of rehabilitation.
