Dying after cure: A case of suicide in an adolescent treated for cancer.

Although suicide among childhood cancer survivors is rare, there is still a significantly higher risk in this population than in healthy adolescents. A 17-year-old girl cured of Burkitt lymphoma committed suicide after completing her treatment. She had never previously shown signs of psychological suffering and was in good general health. This case made the operators wonder how this tragic possibility might be prevented. It is essential for the ongoing monitoring of the psychological and social suffering of young people during follow-up programs to be assured by a multidisciplinary team involv

A web-based program for informal caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease: an iterative user-centered design.

BACKGROUND: Web-based programs have been developed for informal caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease (PWAD). However, these programs can prove difficult to adopt, especially for older people, who are less familiar with the Internet than other populations. Despite the fundamental role of usability testing in promoting caregivers' correct use and adoption of these programs, to our knowledge, this is the first study describing this process before evaluating a program for caregivers of PWAD in a randomized clinical trial. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to describe the developm

The effect of cancer diagnosis in first-degree relatives on participation of healthy individuals in cancer screening programs and on their attitudes towards healthy lifestyle changes.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring that first-degree relatives of patients diagnosed with cancer are included in the cancer screening programs will reduce the negative effects that may arise both for the individuals having the risk of cancer and for the community. In our study, we aimed to investigate the awareness and attitudes of the first-degree relatives of patients, who have received diagnosis of a cancer, toward cancer screening programs and to determine the risk factors for cancer. METHODS: A questionnaire prepared by the researchers was conducted over the relatives of 234 cancer patients for determ

Implementing a COVID-19 vaccination outreach service for people experiencing homelessness.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: In 2021, the Australian government implemented a population wide COVID-19 vaccination program. People experiencing homelessness faced challenges accessing vaccines and many were not being reached. By reorienting vaccination services to include assertive outreach strategies, a Brisbane-based non-profit health care team successfully administered 2065 COVID-19 vaccinations to homeless and precariously housed people. This study examines insights from stakeholders delivering the service and perspectives of clients who received a vaccine. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with fi

Falls among healthy, community-dwelling, older women: a prospective study of frequency, circumstances, consequences and prediction accuracy.

OBJECTIVE: Most studies of falls among older people have focused on those with some degree of balance or mobility impairment. This study aimed to establish whether falls and associated injuries were a major problem among healthy, older women, whether there were some common features in the falls, and whether these falls could be accurately predicted. METHOD: Ninety-six healthy, active community-dwelling women in Melbourne, Australia, aged at least 70 years (mean 74.1 +/- 4.0) were initially measured on a comprehensive series of laboratory and clinical balance tests, gait, strength and psychome

The Pervasiveness of Power: Dilemmas for Researchers of Major System Change in Healthcare Comment on "'Attending to History' in Major System Change in Healthcare in England: Specialist Cancer Surgery Service Reconfiguration".

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A large body of research has demonstrated that, although specific memory activities can enhance the memory performance of healthy older adults, the extent of the increment is negatively associated with age. Conversely, few studies have examined the case of healthy elderly people not living alone. This study has two mains goals: to understand whether older adults with limited autonomy can benefit from activities devoted to increasing their episodic memory performance, and to test the efficacy of a memory training program based on autobiographical memories, in terms of trans

Integrating design science theory and methods to improve the development and evaluation of health communication programs.

Traditional communication theory and research methods provide valuable guidance about designing and evaluating health communication programs. However, efforts to use health communication programs to educate, motivate, and support people to adopt healthy behaviors often fail to meet the desired goals. One reason for this failure is that health promotion issues are complex, changeable, and highly related to the specific needs and contexts of the intended audiences. It is a daunting challenge to effectively influence health behaviors, particularly culturally learned and reinforced behaviors conce

Investigation of Fatigability during Repetitive Robot-Mediated Arm Training in People with Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: People with multiple sclerosis (MS) are encouraged to engage in exercise programs but an increased experience of fatigue may impede sustained participation in training sessions. A high number of movements is, however, needed for obtaining optimal improvements after rehabilitation. METHODS: This cross-sectional study investigated whether people with MS show abnormal fatigability during a robot-mediated upper limb movement trial. Sixteen people with MS and sixteen healthy controls performed five times three minutes of repetitive shoulder anteflexion movements. Movement performance,

Status of the year 2000 health goals for physical activity and fitness.

In Healthy People 2000, the national strategy for improving the health of the American people by the year 2000, lifestyle factors such as physical inactivity are major determinants of chronic disease and disability. Despite the documented benefits of exercise in enhancing health and reducing the risk of premature death, only 1 of the 13 physical activity and fitness objectives of Healthy People 2000 has been met or exceeded. Although progress toward 5 objectives for the year 2000 has been made, 3 objectives are actually farther from attainment. Coronary heart disease death rates (Objective 1.1

Excess Body Weight and Gastrointestinal Cancer Risk.

BACKGROUND: Excess body weight (EBW), defined as a body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m2, has become the second most important as well as a potentially modifiable risk factor for cancer in many industrialized countries. The more excess weight people have, the higher the risk of certain cancers. Over the past several decades, EBW has been increasing globally not only among adults, but also among children and adolescents. SUMMARY: EBW is causally associated with colorectal, esophageal (adenocarcinoma), gastric (cardia), pancreatic, biliary and hepatocellular cancer. EBW when combined with tobacco smo

Benefits of a self-myofascial release program on health-related quality of life in people with fibromyalgia: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disease with symptoms that significantly limit the life of affected patients. Earlier studies have shown that the application of self-myofascial release provides benefits in variables such as fatigue, range of motion (ROM) or perceived muscle pain in a healthy population. Despite this, the self-myofascial release technique has not yet been used in people with FM. This study aimed to find out the benefits of applying a self-myofascial release program on health-related quality of life in people with FM. METHODS: Sixty-six participants with FM were randomized i
