Stigma of hearing loss and the use of hearing aids among adults with hearing loss: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: This study explored stigma associated with hearing loss and hearing aid use among adults in Saudi Arabia. It examined the prevalence of hearing loss stigma (HLS) and hearing aid stigma (HAsS) and their associations with hearing aid use and selected demographic characteristics. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 403 adults with self-reported hearing loss. Participants completed an online questionnaire, distributed through convenience sampling, that included validated instruments assessing HLS, HAsS, and personal distress/inadequacy related to hearing loss. Age-Related Hearing Loss: Innovations in Hearing Augmentation.

Age-related hearing loss is a multifactorial condition that affects more than one-third of the aging population. Left untreated it can increase the risk of cognitive decline, dementia, social isolation, depression, and falls. Hearing augmentation devices exhibit improved digital sound processing and Smartphone connectivity. Stigma remains one of the prominent barriers and todays devices offer in the canal models, miniature sizes, and camouflage with the hair or skin color. Although rigorous scientific efforts are made in the research field of inner ear regeneration and some clinical early phas

Association Between Hearing Loss, Asymmetric Hearing, and Postural Instability.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have suggested that older adults with hearing loss (HL) are at a greater risk of postural instability than those with normal hearing. However, little is known regarding this association in middle-aged individuals. The relationships between HL laterality, asymmetric hearing, and posture control are similarly unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of hearing status on postural control and to explore the dose-response relationship between the hearing threshold and postural instability risk in middle-aged adults. DESIGN: This cross-sectional s

Occupational hearing loss. The significance of asymmetrical hearing thresholds.

In 1873 consecutive patients referred for compensation assessment for presumed industrial hearing loss, 281 (15%) had an average difference in hearing threshold between the ears of 15 dB at 1/2, 1, 2 and 4 kHz. An unrelated cause was found in 115 (6%). It was due to trauma in 37 (2%), unexplained in 32 (1.7%) and attributed to noise exposure in 97 (5.2%). The possible mechanisms for noise as a cause are discussed and include shielding of one ear from noise, unequal recovery after severe noise exposure, and unequal sensitivity of the ears. After extensive investigation, including X-rays, vestib

Analysis of congenital hearing loss after neonatal hearing screening.

INTRODUCTION: Neonates undergo neonatal hearing screening to detect congenital hearing loss at an early stage. Once confirmed, it is necessary to perform an etiological workup to start appropriate treatment. The study objective was to assess the different etiologies, risk factors, and hearing results of infants with permanent hearing loss and to evaluate the efficacy and consequences of the different screening devices over the last 21 years. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort analysis for all neonatal hearing screening program referrals and performed an etiological wor

Childhood hearing health: educating for prevention of hearing loss.

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a devastating inflammatory disease. In lungs with inflammation, microRNA155 (miR155) induces inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting the expression of suppressor of cytokine signaling-1 (SOCS1). In addition, glycyrrhizic acid (GA) has been suggested as an anti-inflammatory drug for ALI, since it is an efficient inhibitor of nuclear factor-κB. In this study, a combined delivery system of anti-miR155 oligonucleotides (AMO155) and GA was developed with R3V6 for the treatment of ALI. R3V6s formed comicelles with cholesterol-conjugated AMO155 (AMO155c) by charge and hydropho
