OBJECTIVE: The objective was to identify and evaluate factors that may influence the recovery rate in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss between 2009 and 2013. Those with an identified etiology were excluded. BACKGROUND: Aminoglycoside antibiotics are some of the most commonly used agents for treating gram-negative bacterial infections. They are extremely efficacious but can result in ototoxicity. It has been postulated that the mechanism inducing damage is the formation of oxygen free radicals. Many compounds have been employed in an attempt to reduce aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether chronic suppurative otitis media may cause sensorineural hearing loss.
METHODS: The files of 121 patients with unilateral chronic suppurative otitis media were reviewed in a retrospective study. Air conduction and bone conduction threshold averages were calculated over the speech frequencies (500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz). Thresholds at 4 kHz were examined separately but in a similar way. Multiple linear regression models were used to clarify the relationships between sensorineural hearing loss and chronic otitis media.

A retrospective review was done, examining the charts of 41 patients admitted to The Eye and Ear Hospital of Pittsburgh with a diagnosis of sudden hearing loss (SHL). Viral infections implicated in acute hearing loss include rubella, measles, mumps, herpes zoster, cytomegalovirus and influenza. Mumps' deafness is the best documented disorder. We describe a case where bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, following a severe mumps infection at the age of two, remained unnoticed until the age of four when the patient presented with delayed speech and language. This report emphasises the risk of permanent hearing loss as a complication of mumps infection and discusses strategies for early diagnosis and prevention.

The present investigation examines the effects of sickle cell crisis on peripheral auditory function and auditory brainstem response (ABR). The study includes 10 homozygous sickle cell anemia patients with documented sickle cell (SS) hemoglobin. Testing was performed during the crisis and 1 month after it subsided.
