Vertical left ventricular angulation assessed by thallium 201 myocardial perfusion imaging in patients with mitral valve prolapse.

Mitral valve prolapse has been associated with septal to aortic root angle abnormalities determined by echocardiography. Thallium 201 imaging in the anterior view permits visualization of the left ventricular long axis. In the present study, the vertical angle was defined as the angle formed by the long axis of the left ventricle and a horizontal line. The vertical angle was determined in 25 patients who had 201 TL stress testing and M-mode echocardiography. Group I (11 patients) had mitral valve prolapse and group II (14 patients) did not have mitral valve prolapse. The vertical angle and ult

Relationship Mitral valve prolapse syndrome and duodenal ulcer disease with concomitant autonomic dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: There is no evidence regarding the crucial topic of possible correlation between duodenal ulcer disease and mitral valve prolapse syndrome. We herein investigated the potential relationship between these two disorders. METHODS: Eighty-three hospitalized patients with active duodenal ulcer disease were compared with 31 healthy controls for the presence of mitral valve prolapse syndrome. All participants underwent cardiac examination and echocardiography. Heart rate, systolic and diastolic pressures were estimated in supine baseline and standing positions. RESULTS: Echocardiographi

Ventricular dysrhythmias in children with Marfan's syndrome.

A teenager with Marfan's syndrome required resuscitation and was found to have multiform premature ventricular contractions and ventricular tachycardia. Of 24 children with Marfan's syndrome, eight (33.3%) were found to have ventricular dysrhythmias, including three with ventricular tachycardia. Six of these eight patients had mitral valve prolapse, and five had prolonged QT or QTU intervals corrected for heart rate. However, only two patients had severe mitral regurgitation, five had only mild heart disease, and one had no detectable heart lesion. The role of mitral valve prolapse and/or dela

Echocardiographic features of mitral valve prolapse in Libyan patients.

Echocardiographic observations in 200 subjects with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) are presented. The diagnostic criteria used were: (1) abrupt late systolic posterior motion of one or both leaflets of the mitral valve, and (2) holoor pansystolic posterior motion of 3 mm of one or both leaflets of the mitral valve. Most of the subjects were young--72% were aged less than 30 years. Prolapse of posterior leaflets was noted in 98% of subjects--69.5% late systolic, 28.5% pansystolic, and 2% had prolapse of the anterior mitral leaflet only. Mitral valve prolapse was considered to be primary--being the

Multiple floppy valves: an echocardiographic syndrome.

Echocardiograms of 400 patients with mitral valve prolapse examined at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital between 1974 and 1977 were reviewed. Eleven patients (3 per cent) were found to have prolapse (10 patients) or large excursion of the tricuspid valve (one patient) and large excursion of the aotric valve (four patients) or dilatation of the aotric root (seven patients) in addition to mitral valve prolapse. Two of these 11 patients underwent mitral valve replacement, and myxomatous degeneration of the valves was noted on pathologic examination. Almost half of the patients with multiple floppy

Prevalence and clinical significance of aortic valve prolapse.

The prevalence and clinical significance of aortic valve prolapse were determined prospectively in 2000 consecutive patients undergoing routine clinical cross sectional echocardiography. Two hundred and twelve patients were excluded because the aortic cusps were not adequately visualised. Aortic valve prolapse was defined as downward displacement of cuspal material below a line joining the points of attachment of the aortic valve leaflets. Twenty four cases of aortic valve prolapse (1.2%) were identified. The patients were aged 12-64 years and nine were women. All had underlying valvar heart d

Orthostatic hypotension, catecholamines, and alpha-adrenergic receptors in mitral valve prolapse.

The reported association of mitral valve prolapse with autonomic dysfunction and neuroendocrine abnormalities is derived from studies of patients selected because of symptoms or specifically referred for investigation. To determine whether such associations occur in nonreferred and unselected women with mitral valve prolapse, we measured blood pressure, heart rate, and norepinephrine response to standing in 13 volunteers with mitral valve prolapse and in 11 control subjects. Platelet alpha-adrenergic receptor quantity and affinity on standing also were determined in all persons. No significant

Risk of stroke with mitral valve prolapse in population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to clarify whether mitral valve prolapse increases the subsequent risk of stroke. METHODS: A historical cohort study was conducted on 1079 residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, who had an initial echocardiographic diagnosis of mitral valve prolapse between 1975 and 1989 without prior stroke or transient ischemic attack and who were followed up for first stroke occurrence. RESULTS: There was an overall twofold increase in the incidence of stroke among individuals with mitral valve prolapse relative to the reference population (standardiz

To what extent can 3D model replicate dimensions of individual mitral valve prolapse?

Determining the complex geometry of mitral valve prolapse is often difficult. We constructed 3D models of six prolapsed mitral valves for surgical assessment, and evaluated how accurately the models could replicate individual valve dimensions. 3D polygon data were constructed based on an original segmentation method for computed tomography images. The model's replication performance was confirmed via dimensional comparison between the actual hearts during surgery and those models. The results revealed that the prolapsed segments matched in all cases; however, torn chordae were replicated in fo

Current management of mitral valve prolapse.

Mitral valve prolapse is a pathologic anatomic and physiologic abnormality of the mitral valve apparatus affecting mitral leaflet motion. "Mitral valve prolapse syndrome" is a term often used to describe a constellation of mitral valve prolapse and associated symptoms or other physical abnormalities such as autonomic dysfunction, palpitations and pectus excavatum. The importance of recognizing that mitral valve prolapse may occur as an isolated disorder or with other coincident findings has led to the use of both terms. Mitral valve prolapse syndrome, which occurs in 3 to 6 percent of American

Functional state of sportsmen with mitral valve prolapse.

The study covered functional peculiarities in 541 professional sportsmen. Mitral valve prolapse (in 132 examinees) appeared to be associated with reliably lower levels of reticulocytes, leucocytes, lymphocytes CD4+, immunoglobulines G, magnesium, and higher cortisol level, in comparison with the sportsmen having no mitral valve prolapse. The athletes with mitral valve prolapse demonstrated more frequent changes in ECG, reliably lower performance in treadmill test, slower recovery of heart rate after exertion is over.

Implications of mitral valve prolapse in children with rheumatic mitral regurgitation.

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to determine the longterm prognosis of children with mitral valve prolapse associated with isolated rheumatic mitral regurgitation. BACKGROUND: Rheumatic fever may result in mitral valve prolapse, which sometimes leads to severe mitral regurgitation requiring surgical intervention during the active stage of rheumatic fever. However, the influence of mitral valve prolapse on the prognosis of patients with rheumatic mitral regurgitation remains largely unknown. METHODS: From 1971 to 1991, 181 children who fulfilled the revised Jones criteria of rheumatic fe

Predictors of outcome of mitral valve prolapse in patients with the Marfan syndrome.

Mitral valve prolapse has a prevalence of 2% to 3% in the general population, with adverse outcomes such as mitral valve regurgitation (MVR), heart failure, and endocarditis. Predictors of outcomes are used in idiopathic mitral valve prolapse for the timing of surgery, but such predictors are unknown in Marfan syndrome. Therefore, a population-based cohort study of 112 patients (49 male, 63 female; mean age 34 ± 15 years) with classic Marfan syndrome and mitral valve prolapse with moderate or less MVR at baseline was conducted. During 4.6 ± 3.6 years of follow-up, progression of MVR was observ

[Rheumatic cardiopathy in childhood. Epidemiological aspects, and differential diagnostic problems as compared with congenital bicuspid aortic valve and mitral valve prolapse].

A decrease in severity of rheumatic fever, in the number of recurrences of the disease, a relative decrease in prevalence of rheumatic heart disease compared to other forms of heart disease are well documented or suggested by the data collected in the last decades. The reasons of the decline are uncertain. Prevalence surveys in more recent years indicate that, while at one time almost all valvular heart disease was considered to be rheumatic in origin, current data suggest that a significant proportion of damaged valves may be attributed to congenital defects or to acquired disease of other et

The Duke minor criterion "predisposing heart condition" in native valve infective endocarditis - a systematic review.

BACKGROUND The term “predisposition” is used as an indication of antimicrobial prophylaxis to prevent infective endocarditis and as a criterion for diagnosing infective endocarditis according to the modified Duke criteria. The criterion for diagnosing infective endocarditis in native valves is not well defined. OBJECTIVES To identify conditions that increase the risk for infective endocarditis in native valves, for the diagnosis of infective endocarditis according to the modified Duke criteria. In parallel, we compared the results with the year of patient inclusion for each study and echocardi

Myxomatous Mitral Valve with Prolapse and Flail Scallop.

BACKGROUND: Myxomatous mitral valve with prolapse are classically seen with abnormal leaflet apposition during contraction of the heart. Hemodynamic disorders can result from eccentric mitral regurgitation usually caused by chordae tendinae rupture or papillary muscle dysfunction. Echocardiography is the gold standard for evaluation of leaflet flail and prolapse due to high sensitivity and specificity. Though most mitral valve prolapse are asymptomatic those that cause severe regurgitation need emergent surgical intervention to prevent disease progression. CASE REPORT: We report a 54 year old

[Mitral valve prolapse detected during hemodynamic studies].

To estimate frequency of the posterior mitral valve leaflet prolapse in routinely performed left ventriculography, 1000 consecutive ventriculograms of the right anterior oblique projection were analyzed. A group of patients consisted of 511 women and 489 men at mean age 46,5 years. Clinical diagnosis of heart lesions, myocardial disease, pulmonary hypertension or arrhythmias were indications for hemodynamic studies. In the investigated group of patients, there were no patients with clinical diagnosis of the coronary artery disease. Prolapse of the posterior mitral valve leaflet was diagnosed i

[Mitral valve prolapse].

It is thought that mitral valve prolapse is the most commonly diagnosed valvular heart disease and affects 3 to 5% of the community. Mitral valve prolapse is commonly a benign disease and the prognosis is good. But it is understood that mitral valve prolapse causes sudden death rarely. As etiologies of their sudden deaths ventricular arrhythmia, mitral valve regurgitation et al. are known. Mitral valve prolapse is brought as the reason of sudden deaths in athletes not a little. Therefore, it is important to follow up them by exercise tolerance test, Holter ECG, ultrasoniccardiography, and ches
