Two Cases of Chronic Gastritis with non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter Infection.

Two men, 48 and 54 years of age, were referred for medical checkups without any particular symptoms. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a normal gastric body, but white marbled appearance in the lesser curvature of the gastric angle and antrum. Biopsy specimens revealed relatively long and tightly coiled organisms. The two patients were diagnosed as having non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter (NHPH) infection according to the findings of pathological and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analyses. After triple therapy (amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and

Association between Helicobacter spp. infections and hepatobiliary malignancies: a review.

Hepatobiliary cancers are highly lethal cancers that comprise a spectrum of invasive carcinomas originating in the liver hepatocellular carcinoma, the bile ducts intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, the gallbladder and the ampulla of Vater (collectively known as biliary tract cancers). These tumors account for approximately 13% of all annual cancer-related deaths worldwide and for 10%-20% of deaths from hepatobiliary malignancies. Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a devastating disease that displays a poor survival rate for which few therapeutic options are available.

The nosocomial transmission of Helicobacter cinaedi infections in immunocompromised patients.

BACKGROUND: We encountered 15 cases of Helicobacter cinaedi (H. cinaedi) infection between March and July 2008. PATIENT, METHOD, AND RESULT: The underlying diseases were hematological malignancies in a majority of cases, many of which received chemotherapy. All patients had a fever. The fever was followed by cellulitis in three, a skin rash in six, pain in the lower limbs in three, and diarrhea in three cases. We analyzed the bacterial 23S rRNA genes. The fifteen strains were divided according to base sequence into Groups A, B, and C, respectively. All four cases in Group A were women and all

Drug delivery strategies for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections.

Helicobacter pylori is one of the most common pathogenic bacterial infections, colonising an estimated half of all humans. It is associated with the development of serious gastroduodenal disease - including peptic ulcers, gastric lymphoma and acute chronic gastritis. Current recommended regimes are not wholly effective and patient compliance, side-effects and bacterial resistance can be problematic. Drug delivery to the site of residence in the gastric mucosa may improve efficacy of the current and emerging treatments. Gastric retentive delivery systems potentially allow increased penetration

[Monitoring phagocyte activity and free radicals in Helicobacter pylori infections].

The presence of infection in organism induces a lot of Immunological reactions accompanied by creating free Radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). These play an important role in elimination of bacteria but also in tissue injury in surrounding. The aim of presented study was to focus on monitoring of ROS and phagocyte activation in subjects infected by Helicobacter pylori (HP) and thus to contribute to our knowledge of the etiopathogenic role of HP in inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases. The results report some differences, which interpretation opens a lot of questions showing how impo

[Helicobacter infections of man and of domestic carnivores: comparative data].

The role of Helicobacter pylori in generating of the chronic gastritis and in the maintaining of the gastroduodenal ulcerous disease, has been a major medical discovery of these past years in human gastroenterology. More recently in Man, studies have showed that the gastric tumours (adenocarcinoma, lymphoma) are epidemiologically associated with the H. pylori infection. Although the H. pylori infection is the one of the most frequent in the word, the epidemiologic and ecologic aspects of this infections are still not very well known. Thanks to phylogenic studies using the new molecular biology

Helicobacter infections in laboratory animals: a model for gastric neoplasias?

Evidence is rapidly accumulating that Helicobacter pylori is a major risk factor for human gastric adenocarcinomas and all low-grade B-cell gastric lymphomas. Given this, there is a need to develop animal models with a view to discovering not only how carcinogenesis is initiated, but also how the process can be prevented. The lack of H. pylori animal models suitable for long-term studies means that alternatives are needed. The most productive models are likely to be the Helicobacter mustelae-infected ferret or the mouse infected with either Helicobacter felis or 'Helicobacter heilmannii'. The

Effectiveness of Rifabutin-Based Regimens in Treating Helicobacter pylori Infections.

Helicobacter pylori has been reported as a health problem worldwide, affecting a sizable portion of people. Peptic ulcers, gastric cancer, and various extra gastric conditions are associated with this bacterium. The rampant overprescribing of antibiotics has led to the emergence of H. pylori strains resistant to multiple antibiotics, causing a decline in the effectiveness of current treatments. Recently, there has been growing interest in researching alternative treatment options for H. pylori infections that do not respond to initial therapy. Rifabutin, a rifamycin derivative initially design

Efficacy of dexlansoprazole-based triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori infections.

BACKGROUND: Dexlansoprazole has been shown to be efficacious for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease. However, there is a paucity of data about its efficacy for Helicobacter pylori eradication. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of dexlansoprazole for H. pylori eradication as triple therapy in real-world practice. METHODS: Adult patients with endoscopically proven H. pylori related peptic ulcer diseases or gastritis were recruited for this study. The eradication status was assessed based on the results of the 13C-urea breath test performed 4 weeks after treatment.

[Repetition of Helicobacter cinaedi infections during chemotherapy for malignant lymphoma].

A 70-year-old male, who had undergone resection of gastric malignant lymphoma in 1992, presented with cervical lymph node swelling in January 2008. Pathological examination of the lymph node biopsy demonstrated recurrence of malignant lymphoma, and he was treated with the R-CHOP regimen. Although he did not develop fever during the first through third course of R-CHOP, from the fourth course, he repeatedly demonstrated fever over 38°C for about one week after each course of chemotherapy, despite the absence of neutropenia. Helicobacter cinaedi infection was confirmed by blood culture each time

[Diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infections--how, when and in whom?].

Recognition of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) as the major cause of peptic ulcer disease has profoundly changed treatment and prognosis of this disease. The diagnostic tests are invasive (i.e. via the endoscopy) or non-invasive. The invasive tests are: urease test, histology, culture and PCR. Non invasive tests are: breath test, serology and Hp-antigens in faeces. The performance of the tests are almost similar. Sensitivities and specificities usually are > 90%, however the sensitivities and specificities of serological tests may be lower. Choice of diagnostic test depends on the clinical situation,

Helicobacter pylori infections--are these diseases relevant for surgical treatment?

Helicobacter pylori infection and its strong association with gastroduodenal diseases has revolutionized our views and treatment options in these diseases. Surgery has always been considered a mainstay in their treatment. The development of potent eradication regimes has changed indications for operative treatment. With endoscopic procedures being increasingly performed by the surgeon himself, it has become necessary that he educate himself in the diagnosis and treatment of H. pylori infection in order to be able to cope with these diseases in every day surgical practice. Treatment of H. pylor

[Characteristics of Helicobacter infections in gastroduodenal ulcers and their complications].

The presence of Helicobacter pylori (HP) was studied in 143 patients with ulcer disease of the stomach and duodenum. The urease test, immunoenzyme analysis, "AEROTEST" and culture of HP in laboratory conditions were used for diagnosis of HP. On the grounds of the culture method three degrees of colonization of the gastroduodenal mucosa were established. It was found that 96.3% of the patients were infected with HP, 86.3% of them having massive colonization. All the patients with complicated ulcers of the duodenum were HP-positive. A severe degree of the HP-infection with the predominant involv

Detection of Helicobacter pylori infections in patients with gastric syndrome.

Results of microbiological and serological studies, as well as QUT (quick urease test) test done for 204 patients with upper gastrointestinal tract's complaints are presented in this paper. Microbiological studies and QUT test were done with mucous membrane biopsies, taken during gastroscopy or during surgery. Serological studies were performed triple on commercial latex tests and on ELISA-test. Results obtained by QUT test, microbiological and serological studies were comparable. ELISA-test can be recommended as reference test for detection of H. pylori infections.

[Infections of the upper gastrointestinal tract--more than Helicobacter pylori?].

Helicobacter pylori infection is a problem frequently handled by the gastroenterologist, but many other infections may cause symptoms and pathological findings which is of great significance for the endoscopist to recognize. Candida infection is the most common infection in the oesophagus. It may signal an underlying disease like diabetes. When the patient enters Norway from an area where tuberculosis is endemic it is necessary to be aware of possible abdominal tuberculosis. Immuno-compromised patients, and especially AIDS-patients, may have several dangerous gastrointestinal infections. The m

Diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection and diseases associated with Helicobacter pylori by Helicobacter pylori outer membrane proteins.

AIM: To examine the serological response of patients with upper gastrointestinal diseases and Helicobocter pylori (H pylori) infection to two H pylori outer membrane proteins (OMPs) (Mr18,000 and Mr 26,000) acquired by gene recombinant technique, and to determine the diagnostic significance of serological tests derived from these OMPs. METHODS: Recombinant vectors encoding the two H pylori OMPs were used to transform and express in BL21 (DE3) E.coli. After purification with Ni2+-NTA agarose resin, colloid gold kits were prepared with purified recombinant proteins to detect H pylori infection

Current concepts of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Helicobacter pylori infection is a major cause of chronic gastritis, which can progress to a more serious gastroduodenal disease, such as a peptic ulcer, gastric cancer, or gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue. Typically acquired during childhood, H. pylori infection persists throughout life if left untreated, affecting nearly half of the world population, with prevalence varying based on geographic location and sanitation standards. The bacterium exhibits unique adaptations that enable colonization of the gastric epithelium in acidic environments. Its pathogenesis of H. pylori involves b

Helicobacter pylori Infection and Complications of Cirrhosis.

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori is a significant contributor to conditions such as peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer, gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and colorectal cancer. Recent studies have suggested a potential link between H. pylori and cirrhosis. However, the impact of H. pylori on cirrhosis-related mortality, inpatient outcomes, and decompensating events remains unclear. Considering the widespread availability of H. pylori testing and effective treatment options, there is a potential rationale for eradicating H. pylori in cirrhotic patients to mitigate the morbi
