Behavioral Versus Nonbehavioral Guided Self-Help for Parents of Children With Externalizing Disorders in a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Self-help interventions for parents, which have a behavioral basis, are considered to be an effective treatment option for children with externalizing disorders. Nonbehavioral approaches are widely used but have little empirical evidence. The main objective of this trial was to compare the efficacy of a behavioral and a nonbehavioral guided self-help program for parents. Families of children (aged 4-11 years) diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) were randomized to either a behavioral or a nonbehavioral guided self-help program in

The paths of mortality: how understanding the biology of aging can help explain systems behavior of single cells.

Aging is a fundamental aspect of life, yet also one of the most confounding. In individual cells, aging results in a progressive decline which affects all organelles and reduces a cell's ability to maintain homeostasis. Because of the interconnected nature of cellular systems, the failure of even a single organelle can have cascading effects. We are just beginning to understand the dramatic physiological changes that occur during aging. Because most aging research has focused on population dynamics, or differences between wild-type and mutant populations, single-cell behavior has been largely

What you cannot see can help you: the effect of exposure to unreportable stimuli on approach behavior.

We examined effects of exposure to unreportable images of spiders on approach towards a tarantula. Pretests revealed awareness of the stimuli was at chance. Participants high or low (top and bottom 15%) on fear of spiders were randomly assigned to receive computer-generated exposure to unreportable pictures of spiders or outdoor scenes. They then engaged in a Behavioral Approach Task (BAT) with a live tarantula. Non-fearful participants completed more BAT items than spider-fearful individuals. Additionally, as predicted, a significant interaction (F(1,48)=5.12, p<.03) between fear of spiders a

When Bioinspiration Doesn't Help: Mechanical Behavior of Bio-inspired Curved Needles During Curvilinear Insertion.

This study investigates the effectiveness of bio-inspired barbed geometries applied to curved needles for percutaneous procedures. The geometries of insect stingers, such as honeybees and mosquitoes, have been applied to straight needles to reduce insertion forces, tissue deformation, and tissue damage during linear insertion. However, whether these benefits extend to curved needles undergoing curvilinear base manipulation remains unclear. In this study, mosquito-inspired barb geometry was adapted onto bevel-tip curved needles with bent angles of 7.5°, 15°, 22.5°, and 30°. The effect on transv

Effect of Veteran-Focused Suicide Prevention Public Messaging on Help-Seeking Behavior and Secure Firearm Storage.

Suicide is a major public health concern in the United States. Veterans are among those at higher risk for death by suicide. Firearm ownership is one factor that contributes to veterans' elevated suicide risk. The current study sought to determine the effectiveness of an evidence-based, multi-media advertising campaign with a specific focus on veterans related to secure storage of firearms and general help-seeking attitudes during a mental health crisis. Results indicated positive changes in (a) attitudes toward seeking help from a health care provider or a friend/loved one during a mental hea

Who can help me? Understanding the antecedent and consequence of medical information seeking behavior in the era of bigdata.

INTRODUCTION: The advent of bigdata era fundamentally transformed the nature of medical information seeking and the traditional binary medical relationship. Weaving stress coping theory and information processing theory, we developed an integrative perspective on information seeking behavior and explored the antecedent and consequence of such behavior. METHODS: Data were collected from 573 women suffering from infertility who was seeking assisted reproductive technology treatment in China. We used AMOS 22.0 and the PROCESS macro in SPSS 25.0 software to test our model. RESULTS: Our findings

Help-seeking behavior for nonsevere stress urinary incontinence among elderly women in communities, Beijing, China.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a common health problem and influences women's quality of life significantly. In order to enhance health education according to a specific situation, it is essential to identify barriers to seeking help among elderly women with nonsevere SUI. The objectives were to investigate reasons for (not) seeking help for nonsevere SUI among women aged ≥60 years, and to analyze factors affecting help-seeking behavior. METHODS: We enrolled 368 women aged ≥60 years with nonsevere SUI from communities. They were asked to filled out sociodemo

Alcohol use, behavioral and mental health help-seeking, and treatment satisfaction among sexual minority women.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority women (SMW) report higher rates of heavy episodic drinking (HED) and adverse alcohol-related outcomes, including poor mental health, than heterosexual women. These disparities indicate a greater need for behavioral and mental health treatment for SMW. This study examined associations among alcohol outcomes, behavioral and mental health help-seeking, and treatment satisfaction among SMW by age, sexual identity, race/ethnicity, and income. METHODS: Participants included a community sample of 695 SMW (Mage  = 40.0, SD = 14.1; 74.1% lesbian, 25.9% bisexual; 37.6% White

Deaf people's help-seeking following trauma: Experiences with and recommendations for the Massachusetts behavioral health care system.

OBJECTIVE: Deaf trauma survivors are one of the more underserved populations in behavioral health care and experience significant obstacles to seeking help. Repeated encounters with these barriers fuel negative perceptions and avoidance of behavioral health treatment. The current study sought to explore Deaf trauma survivors' help-seeking experiences and elicit their recommendations for improving Deaf behavioral health services in Massachusetts. METHOD: We conducted semistructured American Sign Language interviews with 16 trauma-exposed Deaf individuals that included questions from the Life E

Self-initiated helping behaviors and recovery in severe mental illness: Implications for work, volunteerism, and peer support.

OBJECTIVE: Despite recent interest in peer support workers in recovery-oriented services, little is known about how helping behaviors may affect recovery from severe mental illness outside of formal peer support roles. The current study is a mixed-methods approach to understanding naturalistic helping behaviors and their relationship with recovery outcomes among persons with serious mental illness. METHODS: Forty-six participants with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders completed a narrative interview and standardized measures of recovery, symptoms, hope, patient activation, quality of life, med

How can the study of biological processes help design new interventions for children with severe antisocial behavior?

Children with severe antisocial behavior have an increased risk of showing violently aggressive and other forms of problem behavior in adolescence and adulthood. It is well established that both biological and social factors are involved in the development of antisocial behavior. The primary aim of this paper is to discuss the evidence that specific neurobiological systems are involved in the etiology of childhood-onset antisocial behavior. These factors are responsible for the severity of the behavioral problems observed in antisocial children, but they also play a role in their persistence,
