De novo development of a lesion with the appearance of a cavernous malformation adjacent to an existing developmental venous anomaly.

A case is presented in which a complex multicystic hemosiderin-containing lesion developed adjacent to a previously documented developmental venous anomaly (venous angioma). This lesion had the characteristic MR imaging appearance of a cavernous malformation. Follow-up MR imaging demonstrated a decrease in both the size and complexity of this lesion, which suggests at least a portion of the lesion was due to sequelae of hemorrhage. This case further supports the association of a de novo, hemosiderin-containing lesion in association with developmental venous anomaly. Implications of these findi

Neuropsychological and neuroimaging characteristics of classical superficial siderosis.

OBJECTIVE: To define the neuropsychological and neuroimaging characteristics of classical infratentorial superficial siderosis (iSS), a rare but disabling disorder defined by hemosiderin deposition affecting the superficial layers of the cerebellum, brainstem and spinal cord, usually associated with a slowly progressive neurological syndrome of deafness, ataxia and myelopathy. METHODS: We present the detailed neuropsychological and neuroimaging findings in 16 patients with iSS (mean age 57 years; 6 female). RESULTS: Cognitive impairment was present in 8/16 (50%) of patients: executive dysfun

Advanced Hemophilic Arthropathy: Sensitivity of Soft Tissue Discrimination With Musculoskeletal Ultrasound.

OBJECTIVES: Point-of-care musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) is increasingly used by hemophilia providers to guide management; however, pathologic tissue differentiation with US is uncertain. We sought to determine the extent to which point-of-care musculoskeletal US can identify and discriminate pathologic soft tissue changes in hemophilic arthropathy. METHODS: Thirty-six adult patients with hemophilia A/B were prospectively enrolled. Point-of-care musculoskeletal US examinations were performed on arthropathic joints (16 knees, 10 ankles, and 10 elbows) using standard views by a musculoskeletal

Review of xanthomatous lesions of the sella.

Xanthomatous lesions of the sellar region have traditionally been divided into two separate categories, xanthomatous hypophysitis (XH) and xanthogranuloma (XG) of the sellar region. The seminal article on XH, a condition typified by foamy histiocytes and lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates in the pituitary gland/sellar region, but usually little or no hemosiderin pigment, detailed three patients. However, most reports since that time have been single cases, making understanding of the entity difficult. In contrast, the seminal report on XG, characterized by sellar region cholesterol clefts, lymphopl

An autopsy case of cortical superficial siderosis with persistent abnormal behavior.

In recent years, MRI has revealed cortical superficial siderosis (cSS), which exhibits hemosiderin deposition in only the cortical surface. However, the associations between the histological findings and clinical symptoms of cSS remain unclear. We herein report an autopsy case of a 75-year-old Japanese man with cSS with persistent abnormal behavior according to cognitive impairment, hallucination and delusion. At 73 years of age, the patient presented with unusual behavior that indicated auditory hallucination and delusion. One year later, he was admitted to the hospital for malignant lymphoma

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of bruises: a pilot study.

The purpose of this study was to investigate if magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could be used to image the presence of hemosiderin in bruises and if there was the potential for this technique to be applied as a non-invasive method to estimate the age of bruises. To achieve this aim an animal model to produce lesions resembling bruises was created by injecting blood obtained from the tail vein subcutaneously into an area of the abdominal wall. The animals were euthanized at 3, 6, 12 h, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days post injection and the skin of the abdominal wall was excised for MRI scanning and his

[Superficial siderosis appeared in a case of suprasellar embryonal carcinoma].

A case of superficial siderosis that appeared in a case of suprasellar embryonal carcinoma is reported. A 24-year-old man presented polydipsia and vertigo. MRI revealed a suprasellar tumor. The tumor contained high intense spots on T1-weighted images, suggesting intratumoral hemorrhage. He underwent a surgery, which proved it as embryonal carcinoma pathologically. Cerebrospinal fluid was xanthochromic at surgery, suggesting terminal hemorrhage. After surgery, he received a total dose of 56 Gy of irradiation. Tumor decreased in size and symptoms improved. However, he presented occipital headach

Delayed central nervous system superficial siderosis following brachial plexus avulsion injury. Report of three cases.

Chronic subarachnoid hemorrhage may cause deposition of hemosiderin on the leptomeninges and subpial layers of the neuraxis, leading to superficial siderosis (SS). The symptoms and signs of SS are progressive and fatal. Exploration of potential sites responsible for intrathecal bleeding and subsequent hemosiderin deposition may prevent disease progression. A source of hemorrhage including dural pathological entities, tumors, and vascular lesions has been previously identified in as many as 50% of patients with SS. In this report, the authors present three patients in whom central nervous syste

Exposure-Recovery Approach for Hepatic Toxicity Analysis of Pyrethroid Lambda-Cyhalothrin: Histopathological, Histochemical, and Biochemical Responses in Oreochromis niloticus.

Lambda-cyhalothrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide widely used in agriculture, but its potential to contaminate aquatic ecosystems and exert high toxicity on fish at low concentrations raises ecotoxicological concerns. While standard histopathological and biochemical assessments are common, the novel integration of pigment-based biomarkers (hemosiderin and lipofuscin) offers unexplored mechanistic insights into tissue resilience and residual oxidative stress during postexposure recovery. This study evaluated liver changes (degree of tissue changes-DTC), pigment deposition, and biochemica

Tenosynovial giant cell tumor.

Tenosynovial Giant Cell Tumor (TGCT) is a group of typically benign lesions arising from the synovium of joints, bursae and tendon sheaths. Depending on their growth pattern and clinical course, they are divided into localized and diffuse types. It is predominantly caused by a mutation in the stromal cells of the synovial membrane leading to overexpression of the colony stimulating factor 1 that recruits CSF1R-expressing cells of the mononuclear phagocyte lineage into the tumor mass. The lesions contain mainly histiocyte-like and synovial cells accompanied by varying numbers of multinucleated

Does the intensity of the inflammatory reaction in a bruise depend on its proximity to the site of trauma?

Whole blood was withdrawn by tail vessel puncture from anesthetized adult male Sprague-Dawley rats and 0.1 ml was re-injected subcutaneously at each of two sites on their abdominal wall. In addition, two adjacent sites were injected with 0.1 ml of sterile saline, and two more sites were only punctured using an injecting needle. In the second part of the study anesthetized adult male Sprague-Dawley rats had two sites on the abdominal wall pinched using a small pair of forceps, two adjacent sites received an injection of 0.1 ml of whole blood obtained by tail vessel puncture, and two more sites

Ascorbic acid use in hyporesponders to Epoetin alfa.

I.v. ascorbic acid has been used in an effort to mobilize ferritin stores in hyporesponsive HD patients receiving Epoetin alfa. However, not all patients who respond to i.v. ascorbic acid therapy will have subsequent decline in feritin stores (Gastaldello et al., 1995; Tarng & Huang, 1998). Additionally, predicting those patients who will overcome their Epoetin alfa hyporesponsiveness remains unclear. Ascorbic acid's effect on hemosiderin deposits may be another possible mechanism to the increased Epoetin alfa response observed in some HD patients (Hemosiderin is a pathologic deposition of iro

A quantitative study of the histological morphology of the endometrium of normal and barren mares.

The density of uterine glands, height of surface epithelium, numbers of hemosiderin laden macrophages, inflammatory cells and layers of periglandular fibrosis were evaluated in uterine biopsies from 40 mares. These features were found to be highly variable in normal equine endometrium. Minor pathological changes appeared to be masked by this normal variability. Atrophy of uterine glands was recognized in mares which had been barren for more than three years. No significant differences were found between barren and normal mares in the height of epithelium, number of hemosiderin laden macrophage

Lipopigment in odontogenic cysts.

A study of 105 odontogenic cysts revealed the presence of pigmented cells in the cyst wall in 38% of the cases. The frequency of pigmented cells was higher in the inflammatory odontogenic cysts than in the development cysts. Although isolated pigmented cells were seen within the epithelial lining and cyst cavity, the larger collections were closely associated with cholesterol crystals and hemosiderin deposits; they contained light brown cytoplasmic pigment which manifested sudanophilia, acid-fastness, silver reduction capacity, PAS positivity and yellow autofluorescence in ultraviolet light. Dynamic Magnetic Resonance Imaging Changes in Spinal Ependymomas and Their Impact on Surgical Planning.

Spinal ependymomas are common intramedullary tumors that can show dynamic changes in magnetic resonance imaging findings over time. This study aimed to analyze these imaging changes and their implications for perioperative management. The retrospective study included patients diagnosed with World Health Organization grade 2 spinal ependymoma who underwent surgical resection and had at least 2 preoperative magnetic resonance imaging scans. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on the presence or absence of radiographic changes on magnetic resonance imaging. Magnetic resonance imaging analys

Imaging Features and Misdiagnosis of Giant Cerebral Cavernous Malformations.

BACKGROUND: While cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) have been extensively described, few reports have described the imaging appearance of giant CCMs (GCCMs). OBJECTIVE: To describe the imaging characteristics of GCCMs and study the reasons for preoperative misdiagnosis. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 12 patients (5 men, 7 women; mean age, 35.23 ± 12.64 years) with histopathologically confirmed GCCMs. Two radiologists analyzed the CT (n = 12) and MRI (n = 10) features: location, number, size, shape, boundary, signal intensity, and enhancement. RESULTS: The sellar regi
