BACKGROUND: Serum hepatitis B virus (HBV) pregenomic RNA (pgRNA) predicts antiviral response in adults with chronic hepatitis B (CHB); however, its prognostic performance against conventional biomarkers in children remains underexplored. This study aimed to characterize the kinetics of pgRNA and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and evaluate their predictive value for treatment outcomes in children with CHB.
METHODS: Sixty-five hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive children with CHB who received ≥ 96 weeks of nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA) therapy were included. Serum viral biomarkers were me

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation can lead to liver dysfunction, potentially disrupting antitumor treatment in patients with malignancies. The role of anti-HBV prophylaxis in preventing HBV reactivation in T-cell lymphoma (TCL) patients with resolved HBV infection remains unclear. We retrospectively included TCL patients with resolved HBV infection (hepatitis B surface antigen negative and HBV core antibody positive) who received anti-lymphoma treatment at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center between March 2004 and February 2024. Patients were categorized into the prophylaxis and non-prophy

Controversial areas in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) are those where there is uncertainty, or differences of opinion in management, or where evidence may be insufficient. Areas of controversy include whether patients with high viral load but normal liver function tests should be treated to prevent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or liver disease progression to cirrhosis. Another area is whether quantitative hepatitis B surface antigen (qHBsAg) can be used to better characterize phases of CHB and prognosticate. Finally, the utility of qHBsAg in the management of patients on antiviral therapy such as

INTRODUCTION: Infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype G has been associated with increased liver fibrosis levels compared with other genotypes in cross-sectional studies, yet its role in fibrosis evolution remains to be established.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 158 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-HBV coinfected patients had available HBV genotyping at baseline. Liver fibrosis was assessed at baseline and every 6 to 12 months by the FibroTest (BioPredictive, Paris, France). Risk factors for fibrosis regression (F3-F4 to F0-F1-F2) and progression (F0-F1-F2 to F3-F4) bet

We analyzed the pre-C and core region of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA by a polymerase chain reaction in 22 chronic carriers. In 9 hepatitis B e antigen-positive asymptomatic carriers, a single DNA band was detected at the expected size, whereas additional shorter DNA bands were observed in 7 out of 11 patients with chronic hepatitis. The smaller-sized DNAs from one chronic hepatitis patient had various lengths of deletions spanning from 105 to 183 bp in the middle of the core gene, and all deletions included common nucleotide sequences. All of the smaller-sized DNAs from the other patients prov

Hepatitis B virus-specific DNA sequences (HBVDNA) in the liver were examined in 19 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), 5 patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) and without HCC, 3 patients with chronic hepatitis (CH), 2 patients with metastatic liver cancer (MLC), 1 patient with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and 4 patients with normal liver (NL) by the Southern blot hybridization procedure. Integration of HBVDNA was found in all 4 HCC patients with serum HBsAg, of whom one patient had HBVDNA only in the non-tumor (cirrhotic) region. Integration of HBVDNA was also detected in 4 of 8 HCC

We conducted a study to investigate HIV and hepatitis delta virus (HDV) coinfection among patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and the triple infection's (HIV/HBV/HDV) clinical implications in India, an intermediate HBV endemic region, with an estimated HIV-positive population of 2.5 million. A total of 450 patients (men: 270; women: 180) with chronic HBV infections and 135 healthy volunteers were screened for HIV and HDV. The incidence of the triple infection was low (4 [0.8%]) compared with dual infections of HIV-1/HBV (7 [1.5%]) and HBV/HDV (22[4.8%]). Among 21- to 40-yea

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is still a major worldwide health concern, contributing to chronic liver disorders like hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This review comprehensively analyzes HBV genotype distribution, mutation patterns, and their clinical implications, focusing on diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for HBV-positive patients. The discussion begins with HBV virology, emphasizing its capacity for chronic hepatitis and its association with severe liver complications, notably HCC. Understanding HBV genotypes (A-J) and their distinct geographic distributions is crucial, as genoty

BACKGROUND: Conventional hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccines fail to induce protective antibody titers in 5-10% of immune-competent vaccinees. Therefore, there remains an urgent need to develop a safe and effective HBV vaccine.
METHODS: In this study, we developed an effective and economical method for producing the HBV vaccine by using the high binding capacity of biotin-streptavidin. The preS antigen of HBV was fused with the core streptavidin (cSA) moiety (preS-cSA) and highly expressed in Escherichia coli. We investigated whether the preS-cSA protein could target dendritic cells (DCs) by bin

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of placenta in intrauterine transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV), and the relationship between the fetal HBV infection and the placental infection.
METHODS: Cord blood or peripheral blood was obtained from 61 newborn infants of HBsAg positive mothers. Neonates (28 of 61) infected by HBV were assigned to fetal infected group, and 33 infants without infection were assigned to control group. Histopathological changes of placentas from 61 HBsAg positive mothers were observed by pathological examination and classification.
RESULTS: (1) The positive rate of HB

Hepatitis B virus DNA (HBV DNA) in serum was measured by a Spot hybridization technique in a consecutive series of 79 cases with chronic HBV infection from Taiwan. HBV DNA was found in 96.3% (52/54) of HBeAg-positive, 66% (2/3) with neither HBeAg or anti-HBe and in 63.6% (14/22) of anti-HBe positive patients. The levels of HBV DNA in the HBe-Ag-positive patients were significantly higher than in the anti-HBe positive patients (median, 944 vs. 58 pg per ml, p less than 0.001). The mean ages increased from 28.7 years for the cases with high levels of HBV DNA, to 34.7 years for those with low lev

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis D virus-hepatitis B virus (HDV-HBV) co-infection accelerates liver disease progression and increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, but the immunopathogenic mechanism of its combination with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) has not been clarified. This study reveals for the first time that HDV may induce AIH through abnormalities in immunoregulation in two specific cases. This is the first report of HDV-HBV co-infected patients who did not receive interferon therapy and achieved serological conversion and histological remission by combining antiviral (entecavir) with imm

BACKGROUND/AIMS: It has been shown that hepatitis C virus (HCV) superinfection may suppress hepatitis B virus (HBV) leading to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) clearance and that hepatitis may persist after HBsAg clearance in a few patients. The role of HCV in continuing hepatitis after termination of chronic HBsAg antigenemia remains to be explored in a series of patients.
METHODS: HCV markers were studied using second generation enzyme immunoassay and polymerase chain reaction with reverse transcription and were compared between 41 patients with persistent alanine aminotransferase (ALT)

OBJECTIVE: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) can persist in some HIV-HBV coinfected individuals on tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)-containing combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) but HBV resistance to TDF has not been reported and the source of persistent HBV DNA on TDF is poorly understood. The aims of this study were to assess long-term HBV suppression in HIV-HBV coinfected individuals receiving TDF and investigate quasispecies variation using ultradeep pyrosequencing (UDPS).
METHODS: Ninety-two HIV-HBV coinfected participants on, or about to commence, TDF-containing cART were enrolled [Aust

The introduction of Hepatitis B Immunoglobulins (HBIg) prophylaxis at and after liver transplantation (LT) facilitated excellent long-term survival of transplant patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Several studies suggested that only short-term (i.e. 4-8 weeks) HBIg prophylaxis after LT followed by the long-term administration of HBV polymerase inhibitors prevents HBV recurrence. In hepatitis D virus (HDV)/HBV co-infected patients, the need for long-term HBIg prophylaxis on top of HBV polymerase inhibitors is unknown. HDV requires HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) for uptake int

UNLABELLED: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is endemic in Bangladesh. Studies have indicated that HBV is the major cause of chronic hepatitis B (CHB), liver cirrhosis (LC), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in this country. Recently, HBV-related acute on chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF) has emerged as a serious and emergent medical problem in Bangladesh. To develop a strategy to address HBV-related problems and their influence on health care delivery system, proper understandings about extent of problems and nature of economic burden should be explored. Conservative estimates indicate that

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are among the most endemic pathogens worldwide, with more than 500 million people globally currently infected with these viruses. These pathogens can cause acute and chronic hepatitis that progress to liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Both viruses utilize multifaceted strategies to evade the host surveillance system and fall below the immunological radar. HBV has developed specific strategies to evade recognition by the innate immune system and is acknowledged to be a stealth virus. However, extensive research has revealed that HBV
