While research is emerging, there remains an inadequate focus upon the experiences of those delivering and receiving care specifically for service users with complex emotional needs (CEN) within Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment (CRHT) settings. This study therefore utilised hermeneutic phenomenology to examine the lived experience of both those providing and receiving care within CRHT settings. Data were gathered via semi-structured interviews with 14 participants (seven mental health nurses working within CRHT settings and seven service users with CEN who have received CRHT intervention).

INTRODUCTION: Research suggests the need for further studies of patients' experiences of cardiac tele-rehabilitation to understand how they adapt to life with heart disease in a program with long-distance contact, remote supervision and monitoring of health behavior. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore patients' experiences of tele-rehabilitation and the perceived gains of taking part in the program.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven patients were interviewed using a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. Interview transcripts were analyzed as narratives using the interpretation theory

An estimated 9 million adults in this country may have had a near-death experience (NDE), yet little research has been focused on the early aftermath of this extraordinary phenomenon. The purpose of this interpretive study was to appropriate and make visible how patients who had an NDE during a cardiac or respiratory arrest understood and experienced this early period of survival. Gadamerian hermeneutics (1975/1990) informed and guided the study. This interpretation demonstrates that NDEs and their early aftermath can be the positive, life-enhancing experiences that the common lore and most re

A methodological order is derived from the concept of phenomena and stages of understanding are developed according to Karl Jaspers. The three levels of descriptive, genetic and hermeneutic understanding are applied to the study of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Descriptive understanding essentially reveals a sense of incompleteness and depersonalization that underlies the experience of the nonsense of obsessive thoughts and that obsessive-compulsive symptoms do not come to an end. Genetic understanding shows particularly by reference to the trigger situation that sensitivity, undifferentiated

INTRODUCTION: Emerging scholarship highlights the dominance of Western epistemologies in disaster research, limiting diversity and participation in knowledge production. The occupational therapy profession faces similar critiques of epistemic and hegemonic blind spots, prompting calls for critical reflection on professional assumptions. Drawing on narratives and guided by Whiteford's Occupational Justice PLUS model, we explore how learnings from community members' responses to a bushfire event could broaden our understanding of occupational, epistemic, and hermeneutic justice in the context of

AIMS: The aim of this study was to gain an in-depth phenomenological understanding of the care strategies used by registered learning disability nurses (RNLDs) and palliative care professionals (PCPs) to identify and respond to the distress of people with communication difficulties and a learning disability (PCDLD) in palliative care settings. The objective was to critically explore the lived experiences of RNLDs and PCPs who care for distressed PCDLD in palliative care settings.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic non-malignant pain (CNP) is a significant healthcare problem with considerable consequences for patients, relatives and society. CNP is a lifelong condition that calls for acceptance and self-management. Existing research indicates that the involvement of relatives improves patients' and relatives' management of CNP, but the area is, at present, scarcely described. Research is required to obtain knowledge about the patients' experiences, needs and preferences concerning the involvement of their relatives within the frame of CNP rehabilitation, which is the aim of this study

Drawing on a historical ethnography of how Brazil's post-dictatorial psychiatric reforms have shaped young people's lives, this paper builds on Eve Sedgwick's analysis of the hermeneutics of suspicion to show that narrow applications of Foucault's biopower concept nurture forms of resistance to bio-reductionism centred primarily on epistemic deconstruction. To unsettle this hermeneutic, I put young people's theories of power into conversation with Georges Canguilhem's concept of the milieu and with feminist scholars' work on prefigurative politics. I introduce the concepts of threading and unt

This study used content analysis and hermeneutics to examine 53 first-year nursing students' surmised reasons for their own or their peers' experiences of feeling down or depressed. Study data were confidential e-mail responses (n = 53) to the question, "If you or another student you know has been feeling down or depressed, can you describe a reason?" Content analysis reflected respondents' sense of their own relatedness to the experience; a general sense of awareness of the occurrence of feeling down or depressed among students; suggested reasons, from general to specific, for those experienc

In this article the author draws out the main characteristics of the model of madness in the Western world. This process hinges on an approach of the psychopathological phenomenon within the viewpoint of cultural anthropology. The different cultural expressions and hermeneutic approaches to mental troubles have been brought out by transcultural studies, more particularly concerning depressions. The western model of madness lies within the history of medicine, this is not always the case in other cultural contexts. The question of organic causes has long been debated. The etiologic viewpoint of

PURPOSE: After pelvic radiotherapy, individuals suffer from loose stools and defecation urgency, often resulting in fecal incontinence (FI). Women who have been treated for pelvic cancer report FI as one of the most troubling symptoms, yet they avoid seeking healthcare due to shame and stigmatization. There is a lack of knowledge concerning women's lived experiences of FI in daily life after pelvic radiotherapy. The objective was to illuminate meanings of living with FI among women previously treated with radiotherapy for gynecological or rectal cancer.
METHOD: Interviews were performed with

The aim of this study is to describe and understand experiences related to social support for women with fibromyalgia who suffer from sexual dysfunction. An interpretive qualitative research methodology based on Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics was used. Data collection included a focus group and in-depth interviews with 13 women who averaged 44.8 years of age and 14.3 years since being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Data were analyzed using Fleming's method and two themes were identified: "searching for understanding in socio-family support" and "lack of formal support regarding fibromyalgi

AIM: To present one of the findings from a large-scale hermeneutic research project focusing on promoting a deeper understanding of health and suffering because of serious cancer disease.
BACKGROUND: Although suffering is a main concern for caring science, there is limited research focusing on the suffering of the patients with a serious cancer disease from the patients' perspective and few studies focusing on the patient's health resources and the dialectic between these.
DESIGN: The study has a hermeneutic design inspired by Gadamer's ontological hermeneutics.

BACKGROUND: An ageing population has increased the need for home-based palliative care. General practitioners (GPs) are central to continuity of care, yet time pressure and organisational constraints can challenge person-centred practice grounded in relational familiarity with patients and families.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore how GPs navigate the relational familiarity in home-based palliative care and whether it functions as a basis or a bias for individualised care.
DESIGN AND METHODS: A secondary hermeneutic analysis was conducted, utilising data from two qualitative studies i

PURPOSE: To deepen the understanding of and describe nurse anesthetists' and operating theater nurses' experiences with inadvertent hypothermia in clinical perioperative nursing care.
DESIGN: Qualitative, explorative, and descriptive study that carries an inductive nature.
METHODS: Focus group interviews with 16 nurse anesthetists and operating theater nurses from four hospitals in Norway. Gadamer's hermeneutics has guided the study's interpretation.
FINDINGS: Taking the temperature and measures against inadvertent hypothermia perioperatively are not always systematically implemented. In th

The current status of psychoanalysis is explored in the light of the postmodern critique of forms of knowledge. Analysts have tended to respond by redefining psychoanalysis in the language of the exact sciences or by finding a language that includes both (Kuhn, Rorty), thereby falling either into a reductive "scientism" or the fallacies of the "strong program" in postmodern thought. However, psychoanalytic theories do not meet the probative requirements of science. Neither is the serious problem of competing theories and interpretations adequately addressed by hermeneutics. Philosophical reali

BACKGROUND: The physical isolation of patients colonised or infected with multi-drug resistant organisms is a requirement in hospitals considering the risk of infecting other patients, healthcare workers and visitors. However, how these patients experience isolation in the current environment is not fully understood from the literature.
AIMS: To explore and interpret the lived experience of the source isolation in patients infected with MDROs within an Australian setting.
DESIGN: Hermeneutic phenomenology was utilised as the philosophical framework.
