First-ever HSV-1 recurrence following superficial facial chemical peel after 30-year latency following neonatal primary infection.

Recurrence of orofacial herpes simplex infection is a well-known potential complication of chemical peeling procedures. Risk of reactivation is believed to correlate with depth of peel, leading to the recommendation that all patients with history of primary orofacial herpes simplex infection or recurrent herpes labialis receive prophylactic antivirals prior to and after undergoing medium and deep peels. The following is a case of herpes labialis following a very superficial peeling procedure in an otherwise healthy 30-year-old male after primary infection as a neonate with no history of herpes

Erythema multiforme: Differences between HSV-1 and HSV-2 and management of the disease-A case report and mini review.

Erythema multiforme (EM) is an immune-mediated reaction characterized by target lesions and with possible mucosal involvement. Its most frequent cause is HSV, with HSV-1 more common than -2. It is usually self-limited but it can show recurrences. We report a peculiar case of recurrent herpes-associated erythema multiforme (HAEM) in a 35-year-old man. The patient was affected by both herpes labialis and genitalis, but the typical target lesions were only associated with recurrent herpes labialis. Here, we hypothesize about the pathogenic differences between HSV-1 and HSV-2, and discuss the ther

Prevalence of Plantar Warts, Genital Warts, and Herpetic Infections in Greek Competitive Swimmers.

Viral outbreaks are common in the sport community. Data regarding the prevalence of plantar warts, genital warts, herpes simplex type 1 (herpes labialis), herpes zoster, and genital herpes in competitive swimmers are lacking in the literature. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of those viral infections among young competitive swimmers participating in Greek swimming clubs. Swimmers' parents and adult swimmers were asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire. In total, 1047 swimmers enrolled in this study. The measured parameters included gender, age, times of infection

Trigeminal Herpes Zoster With Mucosal Involvement in a Patient on Prophylactic Valacyclovir: An Uncommon Presentation.

This case report details a unique presentation of trigeminal herpes zoster with mucosal involvement in a 72-year-old female undergoing prophylactic valacyclovir treatment for suspected herpes labialis. The patient initially presented for a routine skin examination. Despite the absence of clinical evidence of herpes labialis, she was prescribed prophylactic valacyclovir. Three days later, the patient developed a unilateral rash, gingival darkening, and severe ipsilateral tooth pain. An examination revealed a crusted erythematous rash along the mandibular division of the left trigeminal nerve an

Clinical features of herpes simplex virus reactivation after microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia: Experience of 200 patients and a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) reactivation occasionally develops in the early postoperative period after microvascular decompression (MVD) for trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Therefore, the present study investigated the clinical features of this phenomenon. METHODS: The study cohort comprised 200 patients with 125 women aged between 17 and 90 years (median age, 66 years) who underwent MVD for TN between January 2010 and December 2020. Characteristics were compared between patients with and without HSV reactivation and clinical features were analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty patients had HSV rea

Herpes Simplex Keratitis Following Corneal Crosslinking for Keratoconus: A One-Year Case Series Follow-Up.

Corneal crosslinking (CXL) is a medical procedure used to treat keratoconus. CXL works by strengthening the collagen fibers of the cornea through the application of riboflavin (vitamin B2) and ultraviolet (UV) light, which helps to stabilize the cornea and prevent further deterioration. There is a recognized risk that CXL can trigger the reactivation of dormant herpes simplex virus (HSV), leading to herpetic keratitis even in patients with no history of herpetic disease. We examined the medical history of 52 patients who underwent CXL procedures due to previously diagnosed keratoconus. We revi

Effect of neonatal BCG vaccination on oral herpes in early childhood: A nested study within a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, primarily used against tuberculosis, has off-target (non-specific) immunomodulatory effects, including potential protection against recurrences of latent herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. Recurrent episodes of HSV herpes labialis (oral 'cold sores') affect a substantial proportion of the population, including young children, and there is currently no effective preventive intervention. METHODS: This pilot study, nested within the MIS BAIR randomised controlled trial (RCT), explored whether neonatal BCG vaccination, compared with no BCG va

Levamisole in patients with recurrent herpes infection.

The effect of the immunomodulating drug levamisole was tested in 33 patients with frequently recurring attacks of herpes labialis or herpes genitalis. All patients had suffered monthly recurrent attacks for at least six months, but were otherwise healthy. Patients were randomly allocated to receive levamisole tablets, 2.5 mg/kg orally, on two consecutive days each week for 26 weeks, or placebo tablets taken for a similar time. The tablets were reversed for a second consecutive six-month period. Seven of 21 patients (33%) with recurrent herpes genitalis infection showed complete response and 10

Dermatologic Reactions Following COVID-19 Vaccination: A Case Series.

We describe 7 patients with various dermatologic reactions following COVID-19 vaccination, including herpes zoster (HZ) infection, herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO), herpes labialis, and urticaria. Although the reactions described here may be related to COVID-19 vaccination, continued vaccination is recommended, as it is the most effective way to protect against serious COVID-19 infection.

Resolution of Recurrent Oro-facial Herpes Simplex Using a Topical Botanical Gel: A Case Report.

Oral herpes labialis, more commonly known as cold sores, are a common encountered viral infection involving herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1). Although relatively benign, these lesions can be both unsightly and clinically difficult to manage. Prescription standards of care and over-the-counter agents, such as docosonal, have often shown only limited efficacy in both decreasing lesional pain and reducing duration of lesional symptomology and are not without potential side effects. Despite some success with acute remediation, recurrent episodes often occur, with seemingly no imparted protection or

Unusual skin sites of herpes simplex eruptions: delay in diagnosis.

Whereas Herpes simplex labialis and genitalis are common and simple to diagnose, herpetic eruptions in other areas are relatively rare and often misdiagnosed. We report five cases of Herpes simplex eruption at unusual sites. Diagnosis was delayed up to 20 years and resulted in unnecessary antibiotic treatment. The recurrent nature of this eruption is the key to diagnosis.

[Cutaneous Herpesvirus Infection].

Among human herpes viruses, those known to cause neurological symptoms are the herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 and the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which remain latent in the dorsal root ganglion. HSV causes herpes labialis, genital herpes, etc. VZV causes varicella during the primary infection, and shingles when reactivated. In this review, we present to the typical cases of each disease; in addition, we present several types of diseases that are closely related to neurological diseases.

Complement activation and spleen function in erythema multiforme associated with herpes simplex virus reactivation.

Plasma C3d concentrations were measured in patients with erythema multiforme (EM) complicating herpes labialis. C3d levels were raised during cold sores but not during EM. Heat damaged red cell clearance was prolonged during EM. These observations support the concept that immune complexes disseminate herpes simplex virus (HSV) antigens to skin before the onset of EM.

Concurrent reactivation of herpes simplex and varicella zoster viruses confirmed by the loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay.

Concurrent reactivation of herpes simplex and varicella zoster viruses is rare. Here, we describe the case of an elderly patient with herpes labialis and herpes zoster manifesting as a right-side facial eruption with vesicles and crusting. The loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay demonstrated the presence of both herpes simplex virus type 1 and varicella zoster virus in swab samples taken from the face, which was confirmed by real-time PCR, suggesting concurrent reactivation of both viruses. The use of the LAMP assay in the present case indicates its usefulness in the diagnosis
