Spermiogenesis and sperm dimorphism in Edessa meditabunda (Fabricius, 1794): Emphasis on aberrant sperm structure and its systematic implications for Edessinae.

Sperm heteromorphism is widespread in Pentatomidae and has been reported in other Heteroptera species. However, its developmental origins and morphological diversification remain poorly characterized, as is the case in the subfamily Edessinae. To advance these issues, we characterize spermiogenesis and sperm dimorphism in Edessa meditabunda (Fabricius, 1794), using light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. The testes of E. meditabunda contain four elongated follicles, positioned in parallel. In all four follicles, spermiogenesis follows a similar sequence but diverges markedly in

Explaining the Green-Bellied Stink Bugs Diceraeus spp. Booming in the Neotropics: Changing from a Secondary to a Key Pest Status.

The green-bellied stink bugs Diceraeus furcatus (F.) and Diceraeus melacanthus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were traditionally known as secondary pests of crops in the Neotropics. This situation has changed dramatically, and nowadays, they turned to be key pests of major commodities, such as soybean and maize. They are polyphagous, showing preference for Fabaceae (Leguminosae) and Poaceae (Gramineae). Despite being predominantly seed feeders (soybean bearing pods and cereals bearing seedheads), they also feed on vegetative (seedlings of maize, wheat, and other cultivated spr

Dimeric N-Acetyldopamine Derivatives Featuring a Seco-Benzene System from the Insects Aspongopus chinensis and Periostracum cicadae.

Aspongamide F (1), a novel N-acetyldopamine (NADA) dimer possessing a 6/6/6 ring system, and (±)-aspongamides G (2) and H (3), rare NADA derivatives with fragmented benzene rings, were isolated from Aspongopus chinensis. (±)-Cicadamides C (4) and D (5), the first 1,4-Benzodioxane NADA dimers featuring a seco-benzene system, and (±)-cicadamides E (6) and F (7), the NADA dimers derivatives, were isolated from Periostracum cicadae. The structures of all compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses and computational methods. A plausible biosynthetic pathway for compounds 1-5 was proposed. T

Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) on Kiwifruit in Northern Italy: Phenology, Infestation, and Natural Enemies Assessment.

The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is an Asian invasive plant-feeding insect and an emerging kiwifruit pest. Knowledge about the BMSB dynamics and damage to kiwifruit outside the bug native range is scarce. This 2-yr study was aimed at describing phenology and infestation dynamics of BMSB in green-fleshed and yellow-fleshed kiwifruits. Natural enemies were investigated as well. Field surveys were performed weekly in two sites in Northern Italy by pheromone-baited traps and visual samplings, from early Spring to mid-Autumn. All BMSB life s

Relative Abundance of the Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Complex Infesting Rice in the Everglades Agricultural Area of Florida.

Florida's rice stink bug complex comprises three species; Oebalus pugnax (F.), O. insularis (Stal), and O. ypsilongriseus (DeGeer), the latter two of which are invasive and exclusive to Florida within the United States. A series of surveys were conducted in 2017 and 2018 to determine the relative abundance of the three species throughout Florida's rice growing region within the Everglades Agricultural Area, in addition to comparing their seasonality within crop and noncrop habitats. Sampling occurred in commercial rice fields and adjacent transects of graminaceous noncrop hosts using sweep net

Low Tunnels Reduce Insect Populations, Insecticide Application, and Chewing Insect Damage on Brussels Sprouts.

Low tunnels covered with spun-bonded fabric (row covers) provide season extension for vegetable production and also afford a physical barrier against airborne insects and other non-soil pests. Brussels sprouts, Brassica oleracea L. group Gemmifera (Brassicaceae), is a popular vegetable in local markets in Virginia; however, unprotected field production is severely affected by insect pest infestation. This study's objective was to determine the level of protection low tunnels provide against insect infestation and leaf herbivory injury. The experiment was conducted at the Virginia Tech Eastern

Characterization of Halyomorpha halys (brown marmorated stink bug) biogenic volatile organic compound emissions and their role in secondary organic aerosol formation.

The formation of aerosols is a key component in understanding cloud formation in the context of radiative forcings and global climate modeling. Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are a significant source of aerosols, yet there is still much to be learned about their structures, sources, and interactions. The aims of this project were to identify the BVOCs found in the defense chemicals of the brown marmorated stink bug Halymorpha halys and quantify them using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and test whether oxidation of these compounds by ozone-promoted aerosol and cloud

[Yield of soybean genotypes under infestation of the velvetbean caterpillar and stink bugs].

Three soybean experiments, one for each maturation group (early, semi-early, and medium), were installed in the field in Assis, State of São Paulo, during the 2003/2004 growing season to evaluate damage caused by Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hubn.) and by the soybean stink bug complex, Euschistus heros (F.), Piezodorus guildinii (West.), and Nezara viridula (L.). The experiments were installed again in 2004/2005, with the exception of the early cycle group. Defoliation caused by A. gemmatalis was evaluated by the percentage estimate of leaf area cut in the first year only, due to low caterpillar inf

A synopsis of the genus Cylindrostethus Fieber 1861 (Insecta: Hemiptera: Gerridae).

Cylindrostethus Fieber, 1861 is one of the most striking genera of water striders (Insecta: Hemiptera: Gerridae) and has Pantropical distribution. Members of this group can be recognized by the very long, cylindrical body; the short antennomere IV; the short labium not reaching the mesosternum; and by characteristics of the abdomen of males and females. Although Neotropical representatives of the genus have been revised, there are pending taxonomic issues related to this fauna, and that of the Eastern Hemisphere has been barely studied in recent years. Here, we present a short note about the a

Experimental and theoretical studies on the dynamic landing of water striders on water.

As a species of insects living on water, water striders jump from the water surface to avoid predation and then steadily land without piercing the surface. This spectacular property has attracted extensive interests since it provides bio-inspirations for designing functional microrobots moving on water. In this work, we investigate the landing dynamics of water striders by using artificial striders with different masses and leg lengths. It is found that once a water strider has landed, it oscillates on the water surface and the amplitude decays gradually, triggering a sequence of surface waves

Mining Lygus hesperus (western tarnished plant bug) transcriptomic data for transient receptor potential channels: Expression profiling and functional characterization of a Painless homolog.

The transient receptor potential (TRP) family of cation channels are evolutionarily conserved proteins with critical roles in sensory physiology. Despite extensive studies in model species, knowledge of TRP channel functional diversity and physiological impact remains limited in many non-model insect species. To assess the TRP channel repertoire in a non-model agriculture pest species (Lygus hesperus), publicly available transcriptomic datasets were mined for potential homologs. Among the transcripts identified, 30 are predicted to encompass complete open reading frames that encode proteins re

The metathoracic scent gland of the leaf-footed bug, Leptoglossus zonatus.

The metathoracic scent gland of 25-day-old adults of both sexes of the leaf-footed bug, Leptoglossus zonatus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Coreidae), are described based on optical microscopy analysis. No sexual dimorphism was observed in the glandular composition of this species. The gland is located in the anteroventral corner of the metathoracic pleura between the middle and posterior coxal pits. The opening to the outside of the gland is very wide and permanently open as it lacks a protective membrane. In the internal part, there is a pair of metathoracic glands that consist of piles of intertwin

Correlating Eucalyptus leaf metabolomics with preference of the bronze bug, Thaumastocoris peregrinus.

Eucalyptus species are among the most planted trees in forestry production, an ever-increasing commercial activity worldwide. Forestry expansion demands a continuous search for preventive and sanitary measures against pests and diseases. Massive application of phytosanitary products is incompatible with the forestry sector, so forest health management must be based on other principles. In this context, studies on insect plant relationships mediated by plant metabolites may contribute information relevant to plant resistance and genotype selection. In this study, we analyzed the leaf metabolome

Phytophagy of omnivorous predator Macrolophus pygmaeus affects performance of herbivores through induced plant defences.

Plants possess various inducible defences that result in synthesis of specialized metabolites in response to herbivory, which can interfere with the performance of herbivores of the same and other species. Much less is known of the effects of plant feeding by omnivores. We found that previous feeding of the omnivorous predator Macrolophus pygmaeus on sweet pepper plants significantly reduced reproduction of the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae and western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis on the same plants, also on leaves that had not been exposed to the omnivore. In contras

Field abundance and spatial patterns of ear-feeding insect pests in relation to levels of defective kernels in processing sweet corn.

In this study, we investigated the within-field distribution of sweet corn insect pests in relation to adjacent habitats and determined the level and specific causes of defective kernels affecting the quality of the final product at the processing cannery. Sap beetles [primarily Carpophilus lugubris (Murray, 1864) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae)] and stink bugs [primarily Euschistus servus (Say) ((Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)] infested 27.6% and 73.6% of the fields, respectively. Densities of stink bugs were highest along field edges adjacent to wheat, soybean, vegetable crops, and woodlots. Levels of

Honeydew production by the giant willow aphid (Tuberolachnus salignus, Hemiptera: Aphididae) and its effect on foraging yellowjackets (Hymenoptera: Vespidae).

BACKGROUND: Understanding the factors that promote the success of invasive species is important for managing biological invasions. Interactions between invasives and other species (e.g. competitors, pathogens, or predators), could favor or limit their success. In recent decades, yellowjacket wasps, including Vespula germanica and Vespula vulgaris, have successfully established in Patagonia. Additionally, the invasive willow Salix fragilis has invaded areas next to watercourses, which in turn are typically colonized by the giant willow aphid (GWA, Tuberolagnus salignus), an additional species c

Risk assessment of RNAi-based pesticides to non-target organisms: Evaluating the effects of sequence similarity in the parasitoid wasp Telenomus podisi.

RNA interference (RNAi)-based pesticides are promising novel pest management products that might reduce environmental impacts compared to other pesticides. Their sequence-guided mode of action facilitates a high species-selectivity, preventing harm on non-target organisms. However, there is currently no consensus on the minimum needed sequence similarity for efficient RNAi in insects and studies have shown that adverse effects in non-targets cannot always be ruled out a priori. This study investigates the effects of exposing the parasitoid wasp Telenomus podisi to double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) w

Influence of Irradiation on the Biology of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae).

Fifth-instar brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys Stål) nymphs were treated by gamma-radiation 60Co at different doses of 8-64 Gy to investigate their irradiation biology and potential for the sterile insect technique (SIT). At adult emergence, males were mated with non-irradiated virgin females to assess the longevity of both sexes, female fecundity, and egg sterility. Biological parameters of their F1 progeny were investigated to determine whether negative effects from parental exposure to radiation were inherited. Results showed that irradiation significantly reduced the lifespan o
