Heterosexual sexual behaviour in a sample of homosexually active men.

Three hundred and fifty six homosexually active men were recruited in 1988 for a study by interview of sexual behaviour. Thirty two per cent had homosexual passive anal sex in the previous month and 60% in the year before interview. Anal sex and unprotected anal sex were more common with regular than non-regular partners. Heterosexual sex was reported by 4% of men in the last month and 10% for the last year. Sixteen per cent of heterosexually active men reported anal sex with a female partner. Fewer men described themselves as bisexual than would be expected from the sample's recent sexual his

Measuring physical aggressiveness in heterosexual, homosexual, and transsexual males.

The purpose of this study was the development of a self-report measure of boyhood aggressiveness for use with adult males. Aggressiveness was defined as a generalized disposition to engage in physically combative or competitive interactions with male peers. This attribute is of sexological interest because of the reported difference in physical aggressiveness between heterosexual and homosexual boys. A physical aggressiveness scale (PAS) was constructed from items regarding boyhood athletic interest and proficiency, as well as fighting with and feelings of unease around male peers. The PAS and

Psychological self-perception in male transsexuals, homosexuals, and heterosexuals.

Gender-related aspects of self-perception were explored for 24 anatomical males consisting of three matched groups of transsexuals, heterosexuals, and homosexuals. MacKenzie's Diagnostic Criteria Scale ratings were used to confirm group membership. Instruments used were the Repertory Grid Technique, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Bem Self Role Inventory, Maferr Inventory of Masculine Values, and Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory. Results for transsexual subjects reflected lowest self-esteem. Of the three groups, they perceived themselves to be the most like females and the most unlike o

Changes in Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Estimated Diagnosis Rates of Heterosexually Acquired HIV Infection Among Heterosexual Males in the United States, 2014-2018.

BACKGROUND: Diagnoses of HIV infection among male adults and adolescents ≥13 years with infection attributed to heterosexual contact decreased from 2014 through 2018. Racial disparities exist; HIV diagnoses are higher among Black/African American men compared with men of other races/ethnicities. In 2018, Black/African American males accounted for 61% of diagnosed HIV infections attributed to heterosexual contact among males. SETTING: We used national HIV surveillance data from Atlas Plus to obtain the annual case counts of new HIV diagnoses in males with infection attributed to heterosexual c

Oropharyngeal and Genital Gonorrhea Infections Among Women and Heterosexual Men Reporting Sexual Contact With Partners With Gonorrhea: Implication for Oropharyngeal Testing of Heterosexual Gonorrhea Contacts.

BACKGROUND: There have been very limited studies of oropharyngeal gonorrhea in heterosexuals. Routine screening of oropharyngeal gonorrhea is not recommended in heterosexual contacts of gonorrhea. This study aimed to examine oropharyngeal gonorrhea positivity among heterosexuals reporting contact with a partner with gonorrhea. METHODS: At the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre (MSHC), all heterosexual individuals reporting contact with sexual partners with gonorrhea are tested for genital gonorrhea. In May 2017, MSHC also included screening for oropharyngeal gonorrhea in heterosexual contacts of

Postcoital vaginal bleeding as a risk factor for transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus in a heterosexual partner study in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro Heterosexual Study Group.

BACKGROUND: Several risk factors for male-to-female human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission are well established, but few studies have examined the role of postcoital vaginal bleeding. METHODS: Couples recruited from AIDS centers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were interviewed for risk factors and had blood collected for examinations. Eligibility criteria included confirmed HIV positivity for the male partner, aged 18 years of older, heterosexual contact in the past year, and no other risk factor for female partners except sexual contact with the HIV-infected male partner. Logistic regres

Self-reported masking in sexual minority and heterosexual autistic adults.

Masking can include suppressing or concealing certain behaviors to appear "non-autistic" and is one response to the excess social stressors of being a neurominority in a neurotypical-majority society. It is important to understand how persons who are multiply marginalized (e.g. an autistic person assigned female sex at birth who is bisexual), who experience multiple layers of excess social stressors, may face additional pressures to conceal their authentic selves. Autistic persons may be more likely than neurotypical persons to identify with a sexual minority orientation, such as asexual, bise

Unusual case of non-sexual Mpox transmission in a heterosexual woman.

Monkeypox (MPOX) is becoming an important differential diagnosis in non-endemic regions, particularly in patients with atypical dermatologic lesions and systemic symptoms. Although it is more commonly associated with males, it is important to consider MPOX in females, as its presentation may be misattributed to more common infections. This article describes a 28-year-old heterosexual female with cutaneous lesions and systemic symptoms that were initially thought to be a localized infection. Further evaluation confirmed MPOX with a bacterial superinfection. The patient had no sexual but close c

Factors influencing STI transmission in middle-aged heterosexual individuals.

Research has shown that individuals aged 45-64, or the 'middle-aged' population, are at an increasing risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI). An exploration of the factors that may influence STIs in this age group was carried out to ascertain how to reduce the risk. A critical review identified 14 research papers that considered STIs in middle-aged people. The available evidence base highlighted an under-representation of women, the absence of a consistent definition of 'middle age', and a paucity of specific information on the sexual health needs of this group. Low condom

Efforts to Find Heterosexual HIV in San Francisco, 2007-2013.

Nationally heterosexuals are an HIV prevention priority. In addition to case based HIV surveillance, behavioral surveillance surveys are conducted among heterosexuals living in high AIDS morbidity neighborhoods. We report on risk behaviors and HIV prevalence among "high-risk" heterosexuals in San Francisco. National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System is coordinated by the CDC and implemented in 21 health jurisdictions. The studies were conducted in 2006, 2010 and 2013 in San Francisco. Respondent driven sampling was used to sample participants. Eligible persons were 18-50 years old and had sex

Development of muscularity and weight concerns in heterosexual and sexual minority males.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the development of muscularity and weight concerns among heterosexual and sexual minority males in adolescence. METHOD: Participants were 5,868 males from the Growing Up Today Study, a U.S. prospective cohort spanning ages 9-25 years. Generalized estimating equations were used to test sexual orientation differences in the development of muscularity concerns, weight gain attempts, and weight and shape concern. RESULTS: Desire for bigger muscles increased slightly each year across adolescence (β = .10, 95% C.I. = .09, .11) regardless of sexual orientation, but gay and bis

Qualitative analysis of heterosexual women's experience of sexual pain and discomfort.

In this qualitative analysis, the author explored heterosexual women's accounts of the lived experience of sexual pain and discomfort. The author's aim was to expand theoretical and empirical knowledge in the area of female sexual dysfunction by providing a detailed description of the subjective experience of female sexual concerns. The author used empirical phenomenological methodology to analyze the data generated during semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted with 9 women and generated 42 themes that were woven into a common story of the experience, its preconditions, coping strategie

An outbreak of infectious syphilis among young heterosexuals in an English town.

We describe a recent outbreak of syphilis in young heterosexuals in the north west of England. A cluster of 12 cases of syphilis (7 primary and 5 early latent) was identified in Rochdale in heterosexuals aged 20 or under. Nine were women. Five were asymptomatic at presentation. This outbreak occurred in a group not usually associated with syphilis transmission in the north west. Not all the identified cases could be linked, and so potentially this outbreak is a sentinel of a larger problem.

Missed opportunities for HIV testing among high-risk heterosexuals.

BACKGROUND: HIV testing is an important HIV prevention strategy, yet heterosexuals at high risk do not test as frequently as other groups. We examined the association of past year HIV testing and encounters with institutional settings where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends annual testing for high-risk heterosexuals. METHODS: We recruited high-risk heterosexuals in New York City in 2006 to 2007 through respondent-driven sampling. Respondents were asked the date of their most recent HIV test and any potential encounters with 4 testing settings (homeless shelters, jails/

PCOS in lesbian and heterosexual women treated with artificial donor insemination.

It has been claimed that the prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is significantly higher in lesbian compared with heterosexual women. The present study tried to corroborate this finding in a population of lesbian and heterosexual women consulting for artificial insemination with donor spermatozoa (AID) in the authors' infertility centre. Separate Rotterdam criteria were compared, as well as the outcome of AID. Data were collected from patient files and 174 lesbian and 200 heterosexual women were included in this study. The diagnosis of PCOS was made following the Rotterdam PCOS cons

Heterosexual behavioral maintenance and change following HIV counseling and testing.

This study investigated heterosexual HIV risk behaviors, changes in stage of change for safer sex and factors associated with such changes, among a diverse sample of 560 heterosexually active individuals presenting at publicly funded HIV C&T sites. Questionnaires were administrated before HIV C&T, and three months afterwards. Positive serostatus was the most significant predictor of safer behavior after C&T. Many seronegative participants stopped sex with non-main partners. Behaviors with main partners were particularly resistant to change. Predictors of change varied by stage at pre-test. C&T

The context of sexual risk behavior among heterosexual methamphetamine users.

Relatively little is known about the relationship between methamphetamine (meth) use and sexual risk behavior among heterosexual adults. This descriptive study explores the context of sexual risk behavior among HIV-negative, heterosexual meth-using men and women. Drug use history, motivations for meth use, relationship types, and the social-sexual context of meth use were examined as factors that relate to sexual risk behavior and meth use. The majority of participants were white males with an average age of 38.6 years. Primary motivations for current meth use were to get high, to get more ene

Comparing breast cancer risk between lesbians and their heterosexual sisters.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the similarities and differences between lesbians and their heterosexual sisters in the established risks for developing breast cancer. METHODS: The design for this study was a matched (lesbian with heterosexual sister) cross-sectional, mail-back, anonymous survey. We distributed the surveys throughout the state of California to English-speaking women who identified themselves as lesbians, age 40 and older, and their sisters. Recruitment of heterosexual couples in public health research: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Public health research involving social or kin groups (such as sexual partners or family members), rather than samples of unrelated individuals, has become more widespread in response to social ecological approaches to disease treatment and prevention. This approach requires the development of innovative sampling, recruitment and screening methodologies tailored to the study of related individuals. METHODS: In this paper, we describe a set of sampling, recruitment and screening protocols developed to enlist urban, drug-using, heterosexual couples into a public health research stud
