Remediation of nitrate-nitrogen contaminated groundwater using a pilot-scale two-layer heterotrophic-autotrophic denitrification permeable reactive barrier with spongy iron/pine bark.

A novel two-layer heterotrophic-autotrophic denitrification (HAD) permeable reactive barrier (PRB) was proposed for remediating nitrate-nitrogen contaminated groundwater in an oxygen rich environment, which has a packing structure of an upstream pine bark layer and a downstream spongy iron and river sand mixture layer. The HAD PRB involves biological deoxygenation, heterotrophic denitrification, hydrogenotrophic denitrification, and anaerobic Fe corrosion. Column and batch experiments were performed to: (1) investigate the NO3(-)-N removal and inorganic geochemistry; (2) explore the nitrogen t

Sulfur-cycling diazotrophs dominate nitrogen fixation in seagrass sediments.

Diazotrophs, the microbes capable of fixing dinitrogen, are essential for providing bioavailable nitrogen that supports marine primary production. Traditionally, nitrogen fixation in seagrass sediments has been linked primarily to heterotrophic sulfate reduction, leaving the roles of other metabolic processes, like sulfur oxidation, largely unexplored. Here, we employed metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approaches to explore the distribution, metabolic capabilities, and activity of diazotrophs in sediments dominated by the seagrass Halophila ovalis in a subtropical bay in Hong Kong. Our resul

Investigating the inhibitory effect of cyanide, phenol and 4-nitrophenol on the activated sludge process employed for the treatment of petroleum wastewater.

In this work, the inhibitory effect of cyanide, phenol and 4-nitrophenol on the activated sludge process was investigated. The inhibition of the aerobic oxidation of organic matter, nitrification and denitrification were examined in batch reactors by measuring the specific oxygen uptake rate (sOUR), the specific ammonium uptake rate (sAUR) and the specific nitrogen uptake rate (sNUR) respectively. The tested cyanide, phenol and 4-nitrophenol concentrations were 0.2-1.7 mg/L, 4.8-73.1 mg/L and 8.2-73.0 mg/L respectively. Cyanide was highly toxic as it significantly (>50%) inhibited the activity

Number of bacteria decomposing organic phosphorus compounds and phosphatase activity in the sand of two marine beaches differing in the level of anthropopressure.

Number of heterotrophic bacteria ability to decompose organic phosphorus compounds and the level of phosphatase activity in the sand of two marine beaches (southern coast of the Baltic Sea) differing in the level of anthropopressure were studied. The study showed that the number of bacteria and level phosphatase activity were higher in the sand of the beach subjected to stronger anthropopressure. In both studied beaches bacteria hydrolysing DNA were the most numerous (92.7-302.8 CFU·g(-1) d.w.). The least numerous were phytin (26.0·10(3) CFU·g(-1) d.w.) and phenolphthalein diphosphate (11.1·10

Growth rate-dependent synthesis of halomethanes in marine heterotrophic bacteria and its implications for the ozone layer recovery.

Halomethanes (e.g., CH3 Cl, CH3 Br, CH3 I and CHBr3 ) are ozone-depleting compounds that, in contrast to the human-made chlorofluorocarbons, marine organisms synthesize naturally. Therefore, their production cannot be totally controlled by human action. However, identifying all their natural sources and understanding their synthesis regulation can help to predict their production rates and their impact on the future recovery of the Earth's ozone layer. Here we show that the synthesis of mono-halogenated halocarbons CH3 Cl, CH3 Br, and CH3 I is a generalized process in representatives of the ma

Potential for microbial plastic degradation via assimilation of non-carbon moieties in additives.

Additives such as stabilizers, plasticizers, and fillers are commonly used in relatively small amounts to enhance the structure of plastics. Notably, some of these additives, including moieties of compounds containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur, are essential for microbial proliferation. Most studies on plastic degradation have primarily focused on the potential of microorganisms to assimilate carbon from plastics to support their growth, a strategy that has yet to yield significant success. However, studies investigating the removal of non‑carbon moieties of additives from plastics, whi

Isolation and identification of culturable bacteria, capable of heterotrophic growth, from rapid sand filters of drinking water treatment plants.

The microbial community in sand filters (SFs) of drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) likely contributes to SF functionalities, such as organic carbon removal through heterotrophic metabolism. However, the dynamics and functionality of the SF microbiome and microbial communities in oligotrophic freshwater environments in general, are poorly understood. Therefore, the availability of bacterial strains from these oligotrophic environments is of great interest, but such organisms are currently underrepresented in culture collections. Focusing on heterotrophic carbon metabolism, bacteria were i

Effects of pulp and paper mill effluents on the microplankton and microbial self-purification capabilities of the Biobío River, Chile.

Most studies focus on the ecotoxicity of pulp and paper mill effluents, rather than on how they affect the physicochemical and biological structure and the intrinsic ecological capabilities of the receiving watercourses. We investigated the impact of such effluents on the water quality, microplankton system and microbial self-purification capacity (degradation of polymeric organic compounds via extracellular enzymes) of the Biobío River in Chile. The physicochemical impact on the water quality was indicated by raised conductivity, by the pollution of the water body with nitrate, nitrite and so

Construction of heterotrophic-sulfur autotrophic integrated fluidized bed reactor for simultaneous and efficient removal of compound pollution of perchlorate and nitrate in water.

A heterotrophic sulfur autotrophic integrated fluidized bed reactor was established for simultaneous and efficient removal of ClO4- and NO3- from water. The optimum operating conditions forecasted through the response surface method (RSM) were the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 0.50 h, the influent acetate (CH3COO-) concentration of 55 mg/L and the reflux ratio of 14, contributing to ClO4- and NO3- removal of 98.99% and 99.96%, respectively, without secondary pollution caused by residual carbon (NPOC <3.89 mg/L). Meanwhile, the effluent pH fluctuated in a range of 6.70-8.02 and sulfur-conta

Modulation of carbon-to-nitrogen ratio shapes the microbial ecology in a methanol-fed recirculating marine denitrifying reactor.

BACKGROUND: Nitrate (NO3 -) can accumulate in closed-circuit ecosystems to a toxic level. Adding heterotrophic denitrification process to the water treatment is a strategy to reduce this level. This type of process usually requires the addition of a carbon source. Carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N) is a key parameter known to influence both the function and the activity of microbial communities in bioprocesses. Few studies have examined the influence of C/N on denitrification systems operated under methylotrophic and marine conditions. Here we assessed the influence of C/N (methanol and NO3 -) on

The Effect Of microbial Mats In The Decay Of Anurans With Implications For Understanding Taphonomic Processes In The Fossil Record.

The pattern and sequence of the decomposition of the Pipidae African dwarf frog (Hymenochirus boettgeri) is tracked in an experiment with microbial mats in order to explore soft tissue preservation over three years. Frog decay in microbial mats is preceded by rapid entombment (25-30 days) and mediated by the formation of a sarcophagus, which is built by a complex microbial community. The frog carcasses maintained a variety of soft tissues for years. Labile organic structures show greater durability within the mat, cells maintain their general shape (bone marrow cells and adipocytes), and muscl

Mainstream partial nitritation and anammox in a 200,000 m3/day activated sludge process in Singapore: scale-down by using laboratory fed-batch reactor.

A laboratory fed-batch reactor has been used to study under controlled conditions the performance of partial nitritation/anammox for the 200,000 m(3)/day step-feed activated sludge process at the Changi Water Reclamation Plant, Singapore. The similarity of the concentrations of NH(4), NO(2), NO(3), PO(4), suspended chemical oxygen demand (sCOD), pH, and alkalinity (ALK) between the on-site process and laboratory reactor illustrates that the laboratory fed-batch reactor can be used to simulate the site performance. The performance of the reactor fed by primary effluent illustrated the existence

Autotrophic and Mixotrophic Batch Processes with Clostridium autoethanogenum LAbrini in Stirred Tank Bioreactors with Continuous Gassing.

Simultaneous conversion of syngas and sugars is a promising approach to overcome limitations of syngas fermentation. Clostridium autoethanogenum LAbrini, obtained by adaptive laboratory evolution, is known to show improved autotrophic process performance. Under purely autotrophic conditions, C. autoethanogenum LAbrini exhibits substantially faster growth and biomass formation compared to the wild-type in fully controlled, stirred-tank bioreactors with a continuous gas supply. In mixotrophic processes, the pre-culture strategy has a significant impact on the growth and metabolic activity of C.

Foregut duplication cysts in siblings: A case report.

Enteric duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies that result from heterotrophic rests of foregut-derived epithelium in the head, neck, thorax or abdomen. Typically, foregut duplication cysts of the head and neck are diagnosed in asymptomatic children. No single embryologic process has been identified to explain causation. In this case, we report a case of two siblings with foregut duplication cysts-one cyst occurring in the floor of mouth and the other occurring in the thorax as an esophageal duplication. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such an event in the literature. Thi

Fe(II) enhances simultaneous phosphorus removal and denitrification in heterotrophic denitrification by chemical precipitation and stimulating denitrifiers activity.

Using Fe(II) salt as the precipitant in heterotrophic denitrification achieves improved TP removal, and enhancement in denitrification was often observed. This study aimed to obtain a better understanding of Fe(II)-enhanced denitrification with sufficient carbon source supply. Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted in SBRs with or without Fe(II) addition. Remarkably improved TP removal was experienced. TP removal efficiency in Fe(II) adding reactor was 85.8 ± 3.4%; whereas, that in the reactor without Fe(II) addition was 31.1 ± 2.8%. Besides improved TP removal, better TN removal efficien

Coupling bacterial nitrogen fixation to yeast whole-cell biocatalysis enables amine production using air as the sole nitrogen source.

BACKGROUND: Alkylamine production depends on ammonium produced via the energy-intensive, fossil-based Haber-Bosch process. Diazotrophic bacteria could offer a biological alternative by supplying nitrogen directly from air to heterotrophic whole-cell biocatalysts for alkylamine production. However, their integration with yeast production systems remains largely unexplored. RESULTS: Here, we evaluated the use of an ammonium-excreting strain of Azotobacter vinelandii (AZBB664) to supply nitrogen to an engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae biocatalyst for vanillylamine production using air as the s

Soil Basal Respiration as a Method to Determine The Influence of Soil Management and Microbial Activity.

Soil respiration represents the transfer of CO₂ from the soil to the atmosphere and is one of the largest terrestrial carbon fluxes after gross primary production. Because it is driven largely by the metabolic activity of soil organisms, it is widely recognized as a sensitive indicator of soil biological activity, carbon turnover, and the impacts of environmental or management-related disturbances. Soil respiration integrates multiple CO₂ sources, including autotrophic respiration from plant roots and rhizosphere microorganisms, and heterotrophic respiration associated with microbial decomposi
