Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in wastewater have emerged as a major environmental and public health concern, particularly in areas with high urbanization and limited wastewater treatment efficiency. Despite this, limited data exist on the distribution and diversity of ARB in the Western Himalayan region of India. This study addresses this gap by assessing the prevalence, antibiotic resistance patterns, and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARG) diversity of wastewater-associated bacteria in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. A total of 18 influent and effluent wastewater samples were collected from

Aeromonas spp. are normal inhabitants of aquatic environments and are emerging foodborne bacterial pathogens. Aeromonas spp. contamination is frequent in ready-to-eat (RTE) seafood and can also occur in products prepared from milk or meat. The study determined the enterotoxin and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Aeromonas spp. isolates recovered from RTE milk products (n = 105), RTE meat/fish products (n = 40) and drinking water (n = 60) samples collected from tourist places in Himachal Pradesh, India, in northwestern Himalayas. 7.3 % (16/220) samples were found contaminated with Aerom

The future of High Mountain Himalayan Communities (HMHC) is increasingly precarious due to significant threats from retreating glaciers, diminishing snow cover, and thawing permafrost, which historically provided a stable and reliable source of freshwater. In response to declining water availability, indigenous communities are adopting innovative agro-pastoral strategies, including upslope migration. In the Western Himalayas, local populations are increasingly relocating to higher valleys in search of water and cultivable land, often settling atop rock glaciers. This study presents the first s

Anthropogenic land use change due to farming and livestock grazing has altered biodiversity composition greatly in ecosystems around the world. This is especially true in grasslands and rangelands; however, these ecosystems in high-altitude regions remain understudied. Moreover, anthropogenic effects in these habitats in the long term remain poorly understood. We studied bird densities and composition across four different habitats along a gradient of intensity of land use (crop fields, grazed meadows, grazed steppe, and ungrazed steppe), in the Trans-Himalayan region of Spiti Valley in Himach

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality globally. Recent advancements in systemic therapy, particularly the combination of durvalumab and tremelimumab - dual immune checkpoint inhibitors - have redefined first-line treatment for advanced or unresectable HCC. However, limited real-world data are available on their safety profile outside clinical trials.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare adverse drug reactions (ADRs) related to durvalumab and tremelimumab reported in the European EudraVigilance (EV) pharmacovigilance database with safe

When benefiting other beneficiaries, cushion plants may reciprocally receive feedback effects. The feedback effects on different sex morphs, however, remains unclear. In this study, taking the gynodioecious Arenaria polytrichiodes as a model species, we aimed to assess the sex-specific facilitation intensity of cushion plant by measuring the beneficiary cover ratio, and to assess the potential costs in cushion reproductive functions by measuring the flower and fruit cover ratios. The total beneficiary cover ratio was similar between females and hermaphrodites. Females produced much less flower

An outbreak of bacterial septicemia associated with Aeromonas sp. was investigated in intensive high-altitude aquaculture of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, at the Drass fish farm, Ladakh, during the seasonal transition of May-June 2025. This observational study documents physiological associations rather than experimental causality. A total of 72 fish were sampled: 36 severely diseased and 36 asymptomatic but exposed specimens from adjacent raceways of the same facility. Phenotypic, biochemical, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing of isolate SFB099 identified the agent as Aeromonas sp. with sequ

Bacterial diseases pose a significant threat to the entire aquaculture system, both in cold and warm-water environments. The Himalayan region has been widely utilised for trout farming. However, this region is presently under tremendous stress due to the outbreak of several diseases, which are responsible for a lot of mortality and have resulted in significant economic loss. In the present study, Klebsiella pneumoniae belonging to the K. pneumoniae species complex was isolated from diseased rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss cultured in the trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh. Infected fish were i

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a promising cultivable fish species with significant potential for expansion. As a cold-water fish belonging to the Salmonidae family, it requires an optimal temperature range of 10-15°C for optimal growth. This study explores a method for producing sterile rainbow trout with maximum survival rates by using heat shock treatment to enhance growth characteristics and improve aquaculture practices. A control group and four heat shock treatments were given at 26°C and 28°C for 10 min, applied 15 and 20 min after the mixing of eggs and milt, using a water bath

PM2.5 samples (n = 34) were collected from January to April 2017 over Shillong (25.7°N, 91.9°E; 1064 m amsl), a high-altitude site situated in the northeastern Himalaya. The main aim was to understand the sources, characteristics, and optical properties of local vs long-range transported carbonaceous aerosols (CA) using chemical species and dual carbon isotopes (13C and 14C). Percentage biomass burning (BB)/biogenic fraction (fbio, calculated from 14C) varied from 67 to 92 % (78 ± 7) and correlated well with primary BB tracers like f60, and K+, suggesting BB as a considerable source. Spring water is a vital drinking resource for residents in the Eastern Himalayas' Sikkim, India. While our initial investigations into spring water quality highlighted concerning levels of fecal coliform bacteria, the bacterial community composition (BCC) of these springs remains largely unexplored. This study sought to elucidate the BCC of Himalayan spring water, exploring its effects on water quality and delving into the unique bacterial ecology of these high-altitude springs. Bacterial diversity was assessed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon (V3-V4) library sequencing. The Greengenes reference d

The timberline region of the Western Himalaya is a crucial ecological transition area highly sensitive to climate changes, which significantly influence vegetation patterns, soil formation, and carbon dynamics. This study aimed to investigate the spatial and altitudinal changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) across different topographic orientations and to evaluate machine-learning models for spatial SOC prediction in the timberline ecotone (2100-3300 m) of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Through systematic random sampling across 100 m elevation bands, composite soil samples were collected fro
